Guardians of the Flame - Miner’s Lamp Escort
Since 1987, law enforcement officers from around the world have gathered to carry the Flame of Hope
during the Final Leg in conjunction with Special Olympics World Summer and World Winter Games. The
Flame we carry represents many things for our movement. Most importantly, it represents hope; the light
at the end of the tunnel for many of our athletes and their families. As Guardians of the Flame we guard it
physically as we run it from community to community, but more importantly we guard it symbolically day
after day as it is our responsibility to keep the flame burning bright in the hearts and the souls and the minds
of everyone we encounter. The Flame of Hope is also symbolic of who we are as a profession. When we
carry the Flame we remind everyone that law enforcement represents everything that is principled, fair and
decent. Our unity in this great cause tells the world that law enforcement stands for strength, justice,
courage and helping others – everyone, everywhere.
To honor the symbol of our movement we ask that you please stand in place as the Guardians of the Flame
escort the Flame of Hope to and from the ballroom.
The Corporate Ask - The donor landscape is changing fast. In
the past, corporate partnerships were typically based on the
company simply raising cash for the charity – these days the
relationships need to be richer, deeper and mutually beneficial.
Maintaining and expanding these partnerships, and looking at
new ways to raise funds and access new markets, will be
crucial to succeeding in this uncertain environment. Harnessing
the expertise and insight of a business partner can have a
more dramatic impact than traditional financial support alone.
Special Olympics Indiana Athletes
Allison Werne
Like many Special Olympics athletes, Allison Werne became involved in Special Olympics through her
teachers in elementary school. She competed in her first regional event at age 8 and went on to compete at
the Special Olympics Indiana Summer Games that same year.
Allison’s journey has not been without struggles. First, funding for Special Olympic athletes took a severe
cut at her school and the teachers no longer were able to transport the athletes to events. However,
Allison’s parents did not let her down. They made sure she was able to attend all the events and practices.
Later, Special Olympics in Allison’s county lost its volunteer coordinator. This time Allison’s sister, Katelyn,
and Katelyn’s husband, Derek, filled the void, so Allison’s journey could continue along with the other
Special Olympics athletes in her county.
Allison’s sporting life as an athlete began in development activities. As her confidence and abilities grew, she moved on to track and field,
bowling and is currently involved in swimming. For Allison, Special Olympics is much more than just sports. She became involved in Athlete
Leadership Programs (ALPs) and served as the secretary for her county’s ALPs program for eight years.
Brent Bowgren
Brent Bowgren’s Special Olympics journey began at age 8 because his parents were putting in a
swimming pool at their home and insisted he learn to swim. Brent didn’t know it yet, but Special Olympics
and his swim coach, Lorrie Woycik, were about to change his life forever. “Lorrie just threw me in the deep
end just to prove to me I could do it,” Brent recalls. From that point on, he has jumped at all the opportunities
Special Olympics presented him.
Swimming was just the beginning for Brent. Bowling became his primary sport followed by basketball and
golf. His abilities have led him to places around the world including Morocco and British Columbia. Brent is
a proud member of Athlete Leadership Programs and has been chosen to attend and speak at many conferences
for his sincerity and public speaking skills. He coaches bowling, basketball and bocce while still
competing in bowling and golf. Brent always has words of encouragement and is willing to assist younger athletes with whatever is necessary.
“The encouragement I have received from my family and friends, especially by my Special Olympics and church families, continue to keep me
wanting to try more, to give more, do more and to follow Lorrie’s “you can” attitude in everything I do,” says Bowgren.
Heather Himes
Heather Himes has been competing in Special Olympics for nearly 25 years. She
shared she is a little nervous about speaking to the more than 1,000 law enforcement
officers attending the International Law Enforcement Torch Run Conference. However,
her work ethic and participation in Athlete Leadership Programs have given her the courage
to take on this responsibility, as well as many others. Heather competes in softball, track and
field, and bowling, and she has helped involve her family in Special Olympics. Her niece and
nephew partner with her in bowling, while her father has been a coach and her mother serves as
the assistant coordinator in her local chapter of Special Olympics.
Heather continues to rise to the challenge and welcome new opportunities. When she was asked to compete
in the 4x400-meter relay, she decided to join the team although she had never run a race of that distance. She went on to help her team earn
second in the meet. No matter what the circumstances are, Heather always gives her best effort and the results speak for themselves.
Jason Plante
Jason Plante has been bullied, ignored and improperly diagnosed, but none of that has stopped him from
winning at life. He would misbehave and lash out when he was younger in an attempt to get attention.
Academics were not important and friends were hard to come by. Then, a doctor properly diagnosed Jason
with Pervasive Development Disorder (PDD). He became involved with Special
Olympics and everything changed.
Through Special Olympics, Jason has learned how to make friends, to set goals and make a plan achieving
those goals. His love for golf and work through the Special Olympics programs led Jason to make his high
school golf team as a sophomore. He then competed in the 2007 Special Olympics World Games in Shanghai,
China, where he partnered with his father and won first place in the world.
Now, Jason is a senior at Purdue University. His major field of study is in psychology and currently holds a 3.4 grade point average.
Ken Melvin
Ken Melvin is from Crawfordsville, Indiana and has been involved with Special Olympics for
approximately 19 years. Ken struggled in school both academically and socially but there he met
teachers who began to get him involved with sports and Special Olympics. He credits his involvement with
Special Olympics with saving his life.
Ken’s Special Olympics Indiana volunteer county coordinator, Russ Switzer, completely changed how
Ken thought about Special Olympics and helped teach Ken to be a leader. Switzer encouraged Ken to join
Athlete Leadership Programs (ALPs) University in Indiana where he became equipped with leadership,
management and public speaking skills. Crediting his Special Olympics experience, Ken passed the military
entrance exam and is now a proud member of the Indiana National Guard. In 2009 he served in Afghanistan
with the 2-151 infantry.
Ken has continued to stay active in Special Olympics and teach others about being a leader in the movement. In 2008,
he represented Indiana at the International Task Force Leadership Conference in Hawaii where he presented a class
about his experience in Indiana ALPs. In 2010, he presented a leadership speech to the World Congress in Morocco and
recently was selected as a member of the Presidential Delegation Team that traveled to Greece during the 2011 World
Summer Games – the only Special Olympics athlete to have this honor. His most recent stop was in Arizona where he
taught an Introduction to Leadership and Global Messenger course.
Paul Philhower
Paul first became involved in Special Olympics at the age of 8 years old, when he began participating in
bowling, roller skating, and track and field. Now, he has been active in Special Olympics for more than
25 years and continues to take on new challenges and sports.
Paul’s remarkable athletic achievements include several World Games competitions - competing in
volleyball at the 1995 World Games in Connecticut and representing Team USA at the 2003 World
Games in Ireland where he earned the bronze medal in power lifting.
Today, Paul is a certified swimming, basketball, volleyball and softball coach. He has participated as
both an assistant and head coach in all of these sports. Paul does public speaking appearances on
behalf of Special Olympics Indiana and always looks for opportunities to serve, even assisting FedEx
Plane Pull Challenge teams pulling a 164,000-pound Boeing 757 to help raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics Indiana. Paul’s
parents shared: “We are extremely proud of Paul’s accomplishments. We are even prouder of his unselfishness and willingness to help
others achieve their goals. We believe Paul would not be the confident young man he is today without Special Olympics. For that, we
are grateful.”
Samuel Fawley
Samuel Fawley began his Special Olympics journey in 1998 at the suggestion of his mother. After an
unsuccessful attempt at being involved in a national youth organization, Fawley joined the Special Olympics
swim team in Logansport, Ind., and immediately started gaining confidence. He shared that the difficult
training regimen his coach provided gave him the confidence to compete and the confidence to succeed.
Sam’s participation in Special Olympics Indiana Summer Games has led him to multiple gold, silver and bronze
medals throughout the years, but his proudest accomplishment came at the 2010 Special Olympics National
Games in Lincoln, Nebraska, where he won gold with his fellow teammates in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay.
His journey from 1998 to the present has been filled with hard work and dedication, and he continues to
demonstrate these as he trains as an athlete and Special Olympics spokesperson.
Guest Speakers
nationals and U.S. national cross country championships in the same year. Nike even created two racing spikes in honor of him,
the Nike Kennedy XC and Nike Zoom Kennedy. Both are popular and sought-after racing spikes.
