Over the years, in all of our business endeavors, we learned the best recipe for excellence 

is to surround yourself with high quality people. After careful research we convinced 

Kevin Gallagher to head up our team as General Manager. Kevin added Kenneth Altom, 

a respected and top-notch cowman as Cattle Manager. The Buda Ranch foreman, Eddie 

O’Dell, has been with Rutherford Ranches for 13 years. Bill Crain, the General Manager 

of our South Texas cattle operation, has been with Rutherford Ranches 37 years and is a 

noted cattle judge on the Texas stock show circuit. 

Our Rutherford Ranch team has traveled from New York to California and in-between 

in the quest to acquire the very best Angus female genetics. During these travels, we have 

met many new and wonderful people, making some great friends.

On behalf of the entire Rutherford Ranch staff I would like to invite you to the Inaugural Rutherford Ranches 

Female Production Sale to be held 12:00 (noon) Friday, February 29 th , 2008. We have anticipated this day 

for some time and we are extremely excited for you to be here and evaluate our progress. Please plan to join 

us Thursday, February 28 th at 6:00 P.M. to enjoy some of Florence and Mike Rutherford’s Texas hospitality 

with a prime rib dinner. 

There has never been a better time to be in the Angus business and I can’t explain how excited we are 

to be involved in it. The demand for superior Angus females and bulls has never been greater. We have 

traveled many miles to assemble a core of donor females that excel in performance data and express an 

exceptional phenotype that the cowman can appreciate. Mike’s idea has always been to search for those 

outstanding individuals within the top cow families in the entire Angus breed. Blackbird 4238, Blackbird 

4659, Blackbird 2211, Blackcap 4519, Blackcap 5256, Rita 3206, Rita 6022, Forever Lady 4501 and Forever 

Lady 2039 are a few examples of some of the females we have acquired that can produce a donor prospect 

or herd bull that will make a positive impact on the Angus breed. All of these females will be represented 

in this offering.

History of the 

Rutherford 

Ranches 

~60 Years~ 

Rutherford Ranches was founded in 1948 by Pat R. Rutherford Buda, Texas. 

Four miles of beautiful Onion Creek wind through this Texas hill country 

ranch. At 1,100 feet above sea level, it sits on a limestone outcrop that produces 

excellent minerals and strong native grasses. Similar to most in the 1940’s, 

Pat Rutherford started with top quality purebred commercial Hereford cattle. 

By accident, a neighbor’s Charolais bull jumped the fence and bred several 

Hereford cows. The following year those cross calves out sold the straight 

Hereford calves by a large margin. Rutherford Ranches started to evolve 

toward Charolais cattle, starting a small registered herd in the 1960’s along 

with commercial cattle. The ranch then started buying Charolais cattle from 

Max Michaels, a neighbor who in circa 1933 introduced the first purebred 

French cattle to North America. Years later, Rutherford Ranches started 

importing Charolais cattle from France by way of Canada. In the 1980’s 

the breed trended towards large framed less efficient cattle with birthing and 

fertility problems. Rutherford Ranches dispersed the registered cattle and 

continued in the commercial cattle business. Today’s choice and prime meat 

market had not started and the ranch did not see that trend coming.

Angus Cattle Make Economic Sense!


In the 1950’s Pat Rutherford, Mike’s father, purchased a 14,000 acre ranch near the strong 

grass country of Brady, Texas formally owned by the Richards family. The Richards family 

were pioneers of some of the best Hereford cattle in Texas. For many years this ranch 

produced many Grand Champion steers at the prestigious Fort Worth Stock Show. The 

Brady ranch was gifted to Patsy Rutherford Richter in the late 1960’s. 

In 1968 a third ranch consisting of 20,000 plus acres was added by the Rutherford family 

near Pearsall, Texas. This ranch sits on six miles of Frio river bottom land and is the home 

of Boone and Crocket big whitetail bucks. Today the ranch is owned and operated by 

brothers Mike and Pat Rutherford maintaining a commercial cow calf- operation consisting 

of 1,400 mother cows. Mike Rutherford has been using Angus bulls on his Brayford and 

Brahman Angus cross cattle for several years and the Angus cross calves are outperforming 

the others in dollars. This market change is fueled by the demand for choice and prime 

grade beef that only Angus cattle can efficiently provide. As the beef market has evolved, 

Rutherford Ranches has evolved into the common sense business breed of Angus. With 

60 years experience raising high quality cattle, Rutherford Ranches goal, as always, is to 

maximize their profit using their wonderful ranch assets. As America continues the demand 

for high quality beef, and with the added economic growth of India and China, the future 

for the Angus breed is unlimited.
