Who Should Read This Book<br />

This <strong>TCP</strong>/<strong>IP</strong> User’s <strong>Guide</strong> describes the functions of <strong>TCP</strong>/<strong>IP</strong> Level 430 and explains<br />

how to use the applications available in <strong>TCP</strong>/<strong>IP</strong> for z/<strong>VM</strong>. These applications<br />

include:<br />

v Transferring files<br />

v Sending electronic mail<br />

v Logging on to a foreign host<br />

v Monitoring the network<br />

v Authenticating network users<br />

v Remote printing<br />

v Managing network resources<br />

v Using the Domain Name System<br />

This book also describes how to use the Network File System (NFS), REXEC<br />

command, and GDDMXD with the X Window System.<br />

For information about how to set up, initialize, and customize your <strong>TCP</strong>/<strong>IP</strong>, see<br />

This book is intended for an end-user and describes how to use <strong>TCP</strong>/<strong>IP</strong> Level 430<br />

after it has been installed and customized on your network. You should read this<br />

book when you want to use the applications that are available in <strong>TCP</strong>/<strong>IP</strong> Level<br />

430.<br />

What You Should Know before Reading This Book<br />

What This Book Contains<br />

Before using this book, you should be familiar with the CP and CMS components<br />

of z/<strong>VM</strong>.<br />

In addition, <strong>TCP</strong>/<strong>IP</strong> should already be installed and customized for your network.<br />

The following section briefly describes the format and organization of this book.<br />

This book describes all applications available with <strong>TCP</strong>/<strong>IP</strong> Level 430; however,<br />

your organization may install and use only some of these functions.<br />

Chapter 1, “Introducing Computer Networks and Protocols” on page 1, introduces<br />

the concepts of computer networks, the internet environment, <strong>TCP</strong>/<strong>IP</strong> protocols<br />

and functions, routing, and internet addressing. This chapter is optional for users<br />

who are familiar with computer networks and protocols.<br />

Chapter 2, “Transferring Files Using FTP” on page 15, describes how to use the File<br />

Transfer Protocol (FTP) command and its subcommands to transfer files from one<br />

host to another host.<br />
