CHAIRMAN AND
FOUNDER’S REPORT
We are pleased to report in this Annual Review that Breast
Cancer Haven continues to deliver life-changing services to
more families affected by breast cancer across the UK. This
year, we cared for 27% more Visitors, opened a new Haven in Leeds
and launched Breast Cancer Haven at Home - an outreach programme
designed to help people who can’t reach one of our Havens. These are
huge achievements - all the more remarkable as we have been operating
in challenging financial times.
As expected, the recession has had an impact. We are solely reliant on
charitable donations, and have experienced a 38% decrease from last year.
In addition, the opening of our third Haven and a rise in Visitor numbers at
our other Havens means that our expenditure increased by 10%. We are
however already taking swift and practical action to make the changes
needed to ensure the continued provision of effective services.
A thorough audit and analysis of our service-delivery and fundraising
strategies have resulted in our setting some challenging targets, as we strive
to drive down costs and increase revenue.
Although we remain committed to making Breast Cancer Haven’s services
accessible to more people across the UK, it would be imprudent in this
economic climate to try to raise funds for the purchase, fit-out and running
costs of a new building. Instead, we will seek to expand in different ways.
We will investigate the feasibility of opening Community Havens - working
closely with local communities in areas of greatest need using their existing
facilities. We will also continue to promote Breast Cancer Haven at Home
as a valuable outreach service.
Our fundraising strategies have also been thoroughly reviewed and
demanding targets set to increase sustainable revenue in the most costeffective
ways. We are seeking to establish more long-term relationships
with donors so we have designed and are in the process of promoting our
Haven Guardian programme with great success. We are also building on our
excellent relationships with trusts, foundations and companies that support
our cause.
In this Annual Review you can read more about these and the many and
varied initiatives we have planned for the year ahead, as well as our many
achievements over the past year.
We would like to thank all our supporters for helping us grow into an
established and respected charity that makes such a huge difference to
people’s lives.
Breast Cancer Haven supports
people affected by breast cancer,
helping them to achieve the best
possible quality of life.
In a safe, healing environment, our highly skilled
specialist nurses and therapists have time to listen,
advise and create an individually tailored
programme of complementary therapies and
emotional and practical care. These programmes
are designed to help reduce symptoms, to counter
the side-effects of medical treatment, and to lessen
the impact of breast cancer on people’s lives.
We are committed to making our
services available and accessible
to as many people as possible
affected by breast cancer.
When I first went to Breast
Cancer Haven I had recently had
a mastectomy and was about to
undergo chemotherapy. I found
the sessions on lymphoedema
and nutrition particularly helpful.
I know that the kindness and
support given to me by the Haven
during this period were essential
to my recovery.
Sue Cleland, Visitor to Breast Cancer Haven London
I was diagnosed with breast
cancer in January 2008. On
hearing this, my whole world just
fell apart. If it was not for my faith
and the care and support I
received from the Haven, I would
have not survived the ordeal.
A HAVEN FOR YORKSHIRE
HRH The Prince of Wales
Joan Duke, Visitor to Breast Cancer Haven London
Our third Haven in Leeds opened in October 2008 and has been
warmly welcomed by the local community. During its first seven
months, over 2,000 appointments were offered to 281 women and
their families from across the north of England.
Our patron, HRH The Prince of Wales, visited our new Haven in
Leeds in February. The Prince has always shown great support for
Breast Cancer Haven and our holistic approach to health,
recognising that good food, healing spaces, strong community
support and interaction and combining complementary therapies
with preventative healthcare can help people stay well.
Having been diagnosed with
breast cancer in January 2008
and after two operations,
chemotherapy and radiotherapy,
my journey has felt long and hard.
To me, a haven means a safe
place - and that is just what
Breast Cancer Haven in Leeds is.
After my visit I no longer felt so
alone - the peaceful and serene
atmosphere gave me a sense of
purpose and made me feel like a
whole person again, not a
patient.
The caring therapists are there to
help you gain strength and
positivity for what lies ahead. It is
a truly amazing and
safe place.
WORKING WITH
LOCAL COMMUNITIES
In the current economic climate it would be imprudent to launch
another Fundraising Appeal to buy or rent our next Haven building.
Instead, over the coming year, we will investigate the feasibility of
opening Community Havens, collaborating with local community
organisations and using their existing facilities. This would mean
that we could open further Havens more quickly and focus our
resources on providing our tried and tested programme of care in
the areas of greatest need. We are currently consulting with local
community groups, medical organisations and other charities
about where the next location could be.
BREAST CANCER HAVEN AT HOME
Our DVD, CD and web-based programme, funded by BupaGiving,
has proved very popular with people affected by breast cancer
who cannot reach one of our three Havens. Over 2000 copies have
already been distributed nationally through our website, breast
cancer units, other cancer charities and support groups and copies
have been sent to every breast care nurse in the UK for them to
show or give to their patients.
“Thank you so much for my copy of Breast Cancer Haven at Home
- a useful tool which gave good information and great comfort.
It helped alleviate some of my fears and gave me some easy to
follow exercises and advice that helped me feel better.”
We aim to provide
centres of excellence in
integrated breast care,
in partnership with the
NHS and other health
professionals.
RAISING AWARENESS
AND INCREASING VISITOR
NUMBERS
39% of our Visitors heard about Breast Cancer Haven from
their hospital breast care team. This illustrates the ties we
already have with local medical communities. However, as
some hospitals refer fewer patients than others, there is
more we can do to help the medical community better
understand the positive effects our service has on people
with breast cancer and their families.
Our Programme Managers in London, Hereford and Leeds
- specialist cancer and breast care nurses themselves – are
actively involved in meetings and conferences with their
local cancer networks. In addition, our marketing team will
continue to conduct targeted communication campaigns to
ensure hospital breast care units are well informed about
how we can help their patients.
We take an active role in cross-charity groups and are
strengthening our working relationships with other cancer
charities.
Caroline Hoffman, Clinical Director and Research
Coordinator sits alongside her counterparts on the
government’s National Cancer Survivorship Initiative’s
Assessment and Care Planning Subgroup, which is looking
to shape the services for cancer survivors in the future.
Caroline is also on the National Cancer Research Institute’s
Complementary Therapies Clinical Studies Development
Group to ensure high quality complementary therapies
research in cancer care.
“I was first diagnosed with breast cancer in July 2004 at the
age of 35. I was planning to get married later that year and it
came as a big shock. I just wanted to get the chemo and
radiotherapy over with and get on with my life.
When in December 2005 my doctor told me I had a local
recurrence, I was absolutely devastated. On top of my fears
about my health, it looked unlikely that I would be able to have
children - a family was all my husband and I had ever wanted.
I was determined to do everything I could to get well. I had a
mastectomy but was interested in whether complementary
therapies could help me feel better, cope with some of my
fears and anxiety and also might even be able to help my
fertility.
My breast care nurse told me about Breast Cancer Haven. I
was really apprehensive the first time I went – I was going to be
meeting other women with breast cancer and secondary
cancer and it made it all seem very real. I found it very difficult
to put my feelings into words, but everyone was very warm,
understanding and kind. I discussed my fertility concerns and
they put together a programme of care that included
acupuncture, shiatsu, reflexology and herbalism.
Four years on and I’m well and happy. In February this year I
had my beautiful baby daughter, Cecilia - my doctor said she
was a ‘miracle baby’. I still feel a very close bond with the
people at the Haven. They supported me at a very difficult
time and they also helped me to find ways of staying healthy
that I really believe helped me have my baby.
You can never forget having breast cancer but over time you
think about it less - and having an active seven month old has
really helped with that!”
We ensure our services
evolve according to Visitor
requirements and in
response to new research
findings
We have undertaken a thorough service evaluation, surveying
Visitors’ needs, usage and outcomes as well as a systematic
analysis of costs and resourcing. The evidence has helped us
repackage our services and see clearly where we can reduce
costs and develop additional income streams.
The majority of Visitors described their concerns as
gone or better following their time at Breast Cancer
Haven.
Our core programme remains free and includes a day long
introductory session; an initial consultation; six individual
therapy sessions; four hours of support for family members
and a final meeting to review outcomes and help Visitors to
plan their ongoing self-care.
Our classes, group sessions and seminars have been
audited and streamlined and small donations or charges
introduced to cover costs. New sessions have been added,
such as: ‘Healthy Fast Food’; other sessions have been
redesigned to appeal to wider audiences, such as those
without breast cancer who are keen to live more healthily.
For those who need additional care and are experiencing
financial difficulties or who are on income support, a
hardship fund is also available.
DEVELOPING ADDITIONAL
INCOME STREAMS
Our beautiful Havens offer a healing environment to our Visitors,
but currently they remain unused during evenings, weekends
and certain times of the day. We are in the process of
encouraging therapists to rent our facilities for their private clinics.
Group Acupuncture
Research shows that 13% of Visitors have personal medical
insurance, which could cover on average three of their chosen
therapy appointments. From Autumn 2009 we will pilot a scheme
to recoup the cost of these therapy sessions from the insurance of
Visitors who wish to support the charity in this way.
We collaborate with other
organisations in focused
research into the clinical
effectiveness of integrated
breast cancer care
A pilot study funded by GlaxoSmithKline, in conjunction with
Charing Cross and St Mary’s Hospitals, is investigating the effects
of integrating our programme of care with standard medical
treatment. Results will be available in early 2010.
Breast Cancer Haven is participating in recruitment for a national
three-year study led by Professor Alex Molassiotis, University of
Manchester, into the effectiveness of acupuncture in managing
cancer-related fatigue. Haven acupuncturists are involved in the
treatments for the study.
We are developing particular expertise in new therapies such as
Mindfulness, Health Steps, The Lebed Method, Emotional
Freedom Technique and Living Foods, and how they can help
people affected by breast cancer. We aim to further build on our
existing expertise and capacity to provide Mindfulness Based
Stress Reduction programmes over the coming year.
A survey of our Visitors into the effectiveness of Energy Therapies
- Emotional Freedom Technique, Mind Body Therapy and
Kinesiology - found that 80% felt them to be extremely helpful.
A randomised controlled study evaluating 229 Visitors who
undertook an eight week Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction
programme is now complete and will be published in a medical
journal next year. It was found to be highly beneficial for
improving mood, quality of life and wellbeing in women following
breast cancer treatment.
FUNDRAISING
Breast Cancer Haven receives no government funding and is
dependent solely on charitable donations and income from
fundraising events.
Our income this financial year was hit hard by the recession
and totalled £1,552,168 – a 38% decrease on the previous year.
Now more than ever, our targeted fundraising strategies will aim
to maximise sustainable income streams with minimum cost
and will prioritise the following areas:
building on relationships with existing supporters and
focusing our pared down resources on the most profitable
and less costly income streams.
increasing online marketing and fundraising to enable a
wider reach at lower cost thereby helping us stay in touch
with our supporters more regularly.
launching a new national fundraising campaign – Haven
Hampers – for Christmas ‘09. An alternative to Secret
Santa, it is a cheap and easy way for office workers,
community groups and friends to raise money.
Our Haven in Leeds aims to generate its own running costs
from the surrounding communities so is currently developing
relationships with local companies, trusts and individuals who
wish to support a local charity.
HRH The Countess of Wessex
RE-LAUNCHING OUR HAVEN
GUARDIANS SUPPORTERS SCHEME
Our Haven Guardians are supporters who commit to giving
regularly over a period of time and represent a very cost- effective
way of raising funds.
Our Guardian Programme was re-launched by HRH The Countess
of Wessex at an exclusive networking breakfast. Supporters were
asked to commit to donating either one, five or ten thousand
pounds for 3 years. In return, Haven Guardians receive regular
updates, invitations to viewings and events but most importantly,
they know that their donation will help us continue to support
women and their families affected by breast cancer.
We aim to increase our number of Guardians from 70 to 200 this
year and hope that, in the run up to our 10th Anniversary, many
more new members of the community will sign up.
Every time I walked through the
Haven’s front door my shoulders
relaxed and I could feel the tension
leave my body. The team were so
friendly and nothing fazed them. I
had somewhere to go when I was
worried, where they would
understand how I was feeling and
people I could talk to about
anything.
TRUSTS AND
FOUNDATIONS
CONTINUE TO BE AN
IMPORTANT SOURCE
OF INCOME
The team had another good
year, raising £467,089, which
was 30% of our total income.
We are very grateful for all the
support we have received and
would particularly like to thank:
THE HESCO BASTION FUND, whose
generous grant of £75,000 funded the
creation of the Visitors’ café at our new
Haven in Leeds. The café is run entirely by
volunteers and provides healthy, affordable
lunches for our Visitors.
BUPA GIVING, who provided a further
grant of £50,000 for our outreach
programme, enabling us to produce our
Breast Cancer Haven at Home DVD and
CD. Launched in January, it has proved
very popular and is a great help to women
who cannot visit a Haven in person.
THE HENRY SMITH CHARITY for their
grant of £40,000 – the second instalment
of a three year grant – which made a
major contribution to our Clinical Director’s
role, an invaluable position at Breast
Cancer Haven.
THE JOHN ELLERMAN FOUNDATION,
whose grant of £21,000 – the first
instalment of a three year grant – provided
the balance of the funding needed for our
Clinical Director post, which is key to the
provision of our services at all three of our
Havens.
THE WORSHIPFUL COMPANY OF
GROCERS, whose grant of £34,000
funded essential equipment and staff for
the reception area at our Haven in Leeds,
ensuring that Visitors receive a warm and
friendly welcome and an efficient service
from the moment they walk in.
THE EVESON CHARITABLE TRUST for
their grant of £25,000 – the second
instalment of a two year grant – towards
the costs of our Haven in Hereford,
enabling us to continue providing an
outstanding quality of service and care.
SIMPLYHEALTH, for their grants totalling
£18,426 for the provision of the
acupuncture service at our Haven in
Leeds.
THE MAURICE MARKS CHARITABLE
TRUST, for their grants totalling £18,000 –
half of a three year funding commitment –
towards the acupuncture service at our
Havens in London and Hereford.
WALK THE WALK is a grant-making
charity which to date has raised over £52
million for vital breast cancer causes by
organising MoonWalks and SunWalks
across the UK. They have notified us that
they intend to award a grant of £500,000,
commencing in October 2009, which will
be used to maintain the outstanding
quality of our core service, which is free of
charge to anyone affected by breast
cancer.
EVENTS AND
COMMUNITY
FUNDRAISING
Our events and community
fundraising teams raised
£578,879, which is 37% of
overall income.
The current economic climate has made
running large fundraising events with high
ticket prices, such as our annual Blush Ball,
untenable for the time being. Instead, our
fundraising team are inspiring, encouraging
and supporting our voluntary fundraisers
and fundraising committees who continue
to run hugely successful events and
challenges. Refocusing our attention on
smaller, more personalised events with a
higher return on investment means that
more funds raised will contribute to
providing front line services. Our thanks to
everyone who has been involved.
BLUSH MAGIC, organised by our Blush
committee and held at the exclusive Magic
Circle HQ raised £46,000. Guests were
entertained by personal performances
from top magicians and fantastic auction
prizes included a behind the scenes tour
of ‘Britain's Got Talent’ with Ant and Dec.
I was diagnosed with breast cancer in my
twenties and received great care and support
from Breast Cancer Haven. I wanted to give
something back and thought a good way to do it
would be to set up a committee of younger
people who could organise fundraising events
that would attract people like me and my friends.
Our first event was a racing day – it was a lot of
work but great fun and really fulfilling when you
know that the money raised goes to such a good
cause.
FUNDRAISING
Our LONDON COMMITTEE has worked
incredibly hard raising over £70,000 from
events this year including a garden party
held in the Chelsea Physic Garden, a quiz,
car boot sale, art fair and clothes sale.
Our ANNUAL CAROL SERVICE at St
from Sir Michael Parkinson, Katie Derham,
Sir Tim Rice and Zac Goldsmith raised
over £45,000.
The HEREFORD COMMITTEE ran a golf
day and evening black tie reception raising
£16,000.
entertained by dancers from DM Academy
in Bradford, raising £30,000.
Runs and challenges are a burgeoning
income stream. This year our ten FLORA
£46,000 and others participated in the
Bupa Yorkshire marathon, Leeds, Hull and
Bristol half marathons, the British 10k and
BUILDING
RELATIONSHIPS WITH
SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE
COMPANIES
Income from our corporate
supporters this year was
£116,921, just 8% of overall
income. This is disappointing
yet unsurprising during a
recession as many companies
have curtailed expenditure to
demonstrate savings to their
stakeholders. However, we
have been grateful for the
support of the following
companies, and in the future,
we welcome other companies
who share our health and
wellbeing ethos and who wish
to develop mutually beneficial
relationships and support a
good cause. There has been a
large increase in enquiries from
potential new corporate
supporters, indicating stronger
corporate support in the year
ahead.
KITCHENAID continues to donate £50
from the sale of every pink KitchenAid
Artisan Mixer, raising £35,000 to date.
NESPRESSO donated all proceeds from
the sale of a Limited Edition Crystal
OUR NEW AMBASSADOR
Kimberley Walsh
We are delighted to welcome Kimberley Walsh
from the pop band Girls Aloud as a Haven
Ambassador. Kimberley, who opened the Haven
in Leeds in October 2008 and who joined the
September 2009 to raise funds and awareness
for the charity, said:
I'm proud to help raise the profile of
Breast Cancer Haven. I saw how
they helped my dear friend and
dance teacher Deana Morgan when
she had breast cancer and want
other people with breast cancer to
know they can turn to the Haven for
free help and support.
I was diagnosed in October 2006
and following a lumpectomy, I was
advised to have my breast
removed. I decided to have my
second breast removed in early
2007 which helped to ease my
worries.
As a result of breast cancer
I re-evaluated my life – it really
does change your outlook. I run a
dance school called DM Academy,
which I love, but I haven’t
performed professionally for a
while, so with my new lease of life I
replied to an advert that said “Are
you over 40? Do you miss your
fishnets and feathers?” and 9
months after diagnosis and
surgery I was doing the can-can
twice a day in a fabulous variety
show called “WOW!” Later on in
the year we were asked to
perform in Vegas and I became a
single breasted Vegas showgirl at
the age of 44!
When Deana Morgan heard
Breast Cancer Haven was opening
in Leeds, she immediately wanted
to help fundraise
The show’s organiser generously donated a night’s takings to
charity and since then I have been fundraising for Breast Cancer
Haven and other cancer charities.
“I’ve known Kimberley Walsh from Girls Aloud since she was a
student at my dance school in Bradford. She stays in touch and I
am delighted and proud of her chart-topping success. When she
heard about my diagnosis she picked up the phone straight
away to offer her support. Later I asked if she could lend support
to help raise awareness for Breast Cancer Haven. She said ‘yes’
without question. She opened the Leeds branch in October last
year and also took part in the High Heel-a-Thon this September.
Breast Cancer Haven is a fantastic charity that really makes a
difference to people’s lives. I want women, and men, to know
that even though it might feel frightening at the beginning -
breast cancer is not the end - there will always be good things to
look forward to and the Haven is there to help you find them!”
Our reserves
In line with the guidance issued by the Charity Commission, the Trustees have considered the future needs of the charity and
believe that free reserves should be between four and six months’ forward cash expenditure. Such funds are needed to provide
for the charity's working capital needs and a sensible contingency against an unexpected shortfall in fundraising income,
emergency or exceptional unforeseen expenditure, thus enabling services to our Visitors to be maintained and ensure the
financial stability of the charity over the longer term. Of the charity’s total reserves of £2,222,607 at 31 May 2009, just over 50%
(£1,127,729) is invested in our premises – the Havens – and so is not readily available to spend. A further £194,252 is restricted
funding which means it can only be used for specified purposes. This leaves £900,626 as free reserves representing 5.1 months’
forward cash expenditure. The Trustees believe that the current level is satisfactory but will keep the matter under constant review
to ensure that free reserves are adequate for the Charity's future expected operational needs.
