D. COURES OBJECTIVES 1. Develop student’s ability to measure and calculate as it applies to masonry. 2. Develop the student’s blueprint literacy. 3. Introduce student to masonry materials. E. COURSE TOPICS/UNITS Module 28103-04 Measurements, drawings, and specifications Module 28104-04 Mortar F. COURSE COMPETENCIES After successfully completing each module the student will be able to: MODULE 28103-04 MEASUREMETNS, DRAWING, AND SPECIFICATIONS 1. Work with denominate numbers. 2. Read a mason’s measure. 3. Convert measurements in the U.S. Customary (English) system into their metric equivalents. 4. Recognize, identify, and calculate areas, circumferences, and volumes of basic geometric shapes. 5. Identify the basic parts of a set of drawings. 6. Discuss the different types of specifications used in the building industry and the sections that pertain to masonry. MODULE 28104-04 MORTAR 1. Name and describe the primary ingredients in mortar and their properties. 2. Identify the various types of mortar used in masonry work. 3. Describe the common admixtures and their uses. 4. Identify the common problems found in mortar applications and their solutions. 5. Properly set up the mortar mixing area. 6. Properly mix mortar by hand. 7. Properly mix mortar with a mechanical mixer.
G. GRADING PLAN 90-100% = A 80-89% = B 70-79% = C 60-69% = D below 60% = F Grades will be based on homework, quizzes, exams, and job sheets. Daily Participation/Performance 70% Module Exams 20% Final Exams 10% A “no call, no show” the day of a test will result in a “Zero” score and can only be made up at the instructor’s discretion. H. ATTENDANCE POLICY Regular daily attendance is expected. Absences in excess of six may result in the student failing or withdrawing from the class. In the event of an absence, it is the responsibility of the student to notify the instructor ahead of time and make arrangements for any missed assignments within a reasonable time. Any work not made up will be entered as a “Zero” score. I. COURSE COMPONENT SPECIFIC All regular course work and projects must be completed and cleaned up the week prior to finals week. Any work not made up or completed will be recorded as a “Zero” score. If the student needs special accommodations the student must inform the instructor. K. CLASSROOM RULES OF CONDUCT No cell phone use will be allowed in class. Students will be expected to conduct themselves in a manner conducive to a safe learning environment at all times and will be expected to: 1. use all personal protective equipment(PPE) 2. follow all safety and classroom policies as directed by instructor L. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY Students are expected to provide their own tools and do projects so as to develop individual skills and personal responsibility. Any student taking credit for work done by another student will be required to redo the project in question or receive “zero” credit. M. EMERGENCY PROCEDURES 1. Evacuation procedures (TO BE DISCUSSED IN CLASS) 2. Location of first aid kit (TO BE DISCUSSED IN CLASS) 3. Campus security: location, phone, hours (TO BE DISCUSSED IN CLASS) 4.
