B. <strong>COURSE</strong> DESCRIPTION<br />
This course consists of modules that will reinforce the fundamental building blocks for masonry<br />
work. Masonry measurements, masonry blueprint and specification will be introduced along with<br />
materials used in the trade.<br />
C. METHOD OF INSTRUCTION<br />
This class will include lectures, demonstrations, hands-on applications, field trips and group<br />
collaborations.
D. COURES OBJECTIVES<br />
1. Develop student’s ability to measure and calculate as it applies to masonry.<br />
2. Develop the student’s blueprint literacy.<br />
3. Introduce student to masonry materials.<br />

Module 28103-04 Measurements, drawings, and specifications<br />
Module 28104-04 Mortar<br />
F. <strong>COURSE</strong> COMPETENCIES<br />
After successfully completing each module the student will be able to:<br />
MODULE 28103-04 MEASUREMETNS, DRAWING, AND SPECIFICATIONS<br />
1. Work with denominate numbers.<br />
2. Read a mason’s measure.<br />
3. Convert measurements in the U.S. Customary (English) system into their metric equivalents.<br />
4. Recognize, identify, and calculate areas, circumferences, and volumes of basic geometric<br />
shapes.<br />
5. Identify the basic parts of a set of drawings.<br />
6. Discuss the different types of specifications used in the building industry and the sections<br />
that pertain to masonry.<br />
MODULE 28104-04 MORTAR<br />
1. Name and describe the primary ingredients in mortar and their properties.<br />
2. Identify the various types of mortar used in masonry work.<br />
3. Describe the common admixtures and their uses.<br />
4. Identify the common problems found in mortar applications and their solutions.<br />
5. Properly set up the mortar mixing area.<br />
6. Properly mix mortar by hand.<br />
7. Properly mix mortar with a mechanical mixer.
G. GRADING PLAN<br />
90-100% = A<br />
80-89% = B<br />
70-79% = C<br />
60-69% = D below 60% = F<br />
Grades will be based on homework, quizzes, exams, and job sheets.<br />
Daily Participation/Performance 70%<br />
Module Exams 20%<br />
Final Exams 10%<br />
A “no call, no show” the day of a test will result in a “Zero” score and can only be made up at the<br />
instructor’s discretion.<br />
H. ATTENDANCE POLICY<br />
Regular daily attendance is expected. Absences in excess of six may result in the student failing or<br />
withdrawing from the class.<br />
In the event of an absence, it is the responsibility of the student to notify the instructor ahead of time and<br />
make arrangements for any missed assignments within a reasonable time. Any work not made up will be<br />
entered as a “Zero” score.<br />
I. <strong>COURSE</strong> COMPONENT SPECIFIC<br />
All regular course work and projects must be completed and cleaned up the week prior to finals week.<br />
Any work not made up or completed will be recorded as a “Zero” score.<br />
If the student needs special accommodations the student must inform the instructor.<br />
K. CLASSROOM RULES OF CONDUCT<br />
No cell phone use will be allowed in class.<br />
Students will be expected to conduct themselves in a manner conducive to a safe learning environment at<br />
all times and will be expected to:<br />
1. use all personal protective equipment(PPE)<br />
2. follow all safety and classroom policies as directed by instructor<br />
L. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY<br />
Students are expected to provide their own tools and do projects so as to develop individual skills and<br />
personal responsibility. Any student taking credit for work done by another student will be required to<br />
redo the project in question or receive “zero” credit.<br />
