Sponsors 17-19
September was a very busy month at Hanmer School and it flew by! We’re
thrilled to welcome all of our new and returning students and families to the 2012-
2013 school year. When I visit classrooms, I’m impressed that students are s o
quickly following new routines and getting to know their teachers and classmates.
It’s wonderful to have everyone back after what I hope was a relaxing and
enjoyable summer.
This year, we welcome a number of new staff members to our Hanmer
community:
Ms. Sarah Eastwood – Kindergarten Ms. Shannan O’Rourke – Grade 1
Ms. Ally Lockwood – Grade 2 Ms. Patti Morin – Grade 3
Mrs. Michele Mahoney – Grade 3 Mrs. Jodi McNamara – Reading Tutor
Dr. Beverly Iuliano – Speech/Language Pathologist
Mr. Angelo Herrick, lunch and recess aide
It was terrific to see so many of you here for our Open House nights. If you
weren’t able to visit your child’s classroom that night, we hope you can stop by
some other time to see students’ work samples and touch base with your child’s
teacher. Ongoing and open communication between home and school is critical
to a successful school year. Parent-teacher conferences will be held on October
24-26 and those present another opportunity for you to collaborate with your
child’s teacher to make this a wonderful school year!
One important way to stay informed and connected to what’s happening here at
school is to join the PTO. Our PTO is made up of a group of energetic, dedicated
families and teachers who are always looking for ways to support our students.
Our PTO sponsors many fun, family-centered activities and events throughout the
year. Be sure to check the notices that come home, the information on our
website and the postings on our Facebook page so you don’t miss out on the fun!
Also, throughout the year, I’ll be facilitating conversations at the meetings on
topics of interest to parents. At meeting on October 16, I’ll present our 2012 CMT
scores and discuss the variety of ways we assess student learning. If you have a
topic that you would like to see addressed during the year, please let me know.
I’m excited about starting another school year and I look forward to sharing our
initiatives with you as we move forward.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Zacchei

This year got off to a great start! We have already had a very successful back to
school breakfast for the Hanmer staff. Thank you to everyone who contributed! It
was great to see so many families at the meet & greet, first annual Boo-Hoo
breakfast, open house nights, back to school picnic and the Cornfest.
A special thank you to Epstein Bros. in West Hartford CT for donating 30 carpet
squares for the new music room. We hope that everyone has had a chance to
peek inside and see how beautiful it is!
October is going to be a busy month here at Hanmer. We have our annual fall book
fair 10/1 – 10/4, school pictures 10/10, the Jog-a-thon 10/12, PTO meeting 10/16 and
Halloween party 10/26! More information will be sent home for these events, so
keep an eye out in your child’s backpack.
Hanmer also has a few new ways to communicate this year. Please check out our
“What’s Happening at Hanmer School” board located right next to Mrs. Zacchei’s
office. We also are on Facebook listed as Alfred W. Hanmer Elementary School.
Hanmer School PTO now has a brand new webpage! Please check out
www.hanmerschool.com frequently to be kept up to date and there are also
important links. There you will also find our brand new “Who’s Who in Hanmer
School” picture directory.
There are quick and easy ways to earn money for the Hanmer PTO. If you have a
Stop & Shop card, please go to www.stopandshop.com/aplus and sign up for the
A+ Rewards program. Our school ID number is 07386. Last year we received over
$1200 and this money was put towards the purchase of Apple TV devices for the
teachers! You can register your Target Red Card with their Take Charge of
Education program. We also have an account using One Cause. This is a simple
search engine that you can use while making online purchases from hundreds of
stores such as Amazon, Shutterfly, Old Navy, L.L. Bean and Staples. As always,
remember to clip those box tops and send them in to school.
Lastly, Hanmer Happenings now has sponsors! Do you own a business or have a
family member that does? Advertise for the entire school year for only $50. Your
ad will be in 9 issues of the Hanmer Happenings Newsletter, as well as on the
Hanmer School website's sponsor page! Email Melissa Hart for more information.
Feel free to contact your PTO board with any questions at any time! We are all
looking forward to another amazing year!
seeing you at the party.
Thanks!!
We Love Dogs, but...
Please read the following excerpt from the Parent-Student
Handbook:
Due to the rising number of students with allergies as well
as safety concerns, pets are NOT allowed in schools or
on school grounds during the school day as well as before
or after school.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Welcome back!
Nurse’s Corner
Your child’s good health is basic to a sound education and productive living. The
purpose of our school health program is to maintain, improve and promote the health of
your school age child.
Ways to promote a healthy environment for students and staff include keeping your
child home if an elevated temperature is present. His or her temperature should be
normal for 24 hours prior to sending them back to school. Students should not return to
school for 24 hours after vomiting or diarrhea stops.
Please notify us if your child has an infectious disease or condition such as strep throat,
pink eye, lice, ringworm, etc.
If your child becomes ill or injured enough to go home during the school day, you will be
notified so arrangements can be made to take him/her home. Please keep emergency
cards up to date.
As the cold weather approaches, children should be dressed appropriately.
Also, it is important that your child eat a nutritious breakfast each day before coming to
school. As you know, there is a new breakfast program instituted this year.
It remains to be seen how the flu and cold season will affect us this year. Please stress
to your child the importance of rest, nutrition and above all precautions which include
frequent hand washing and covering ones mouth when coughing or sneezing. If you
suspect your child has the flu, please let me know.
The health room is in need of snacks, cough drops and gently used clothing.
Sweatpants or pants with elastic waist bands are preferred. Thank you in advance for
your donations.
Sixth grade parents-you should have scheduled your child’s physical for entry into
seventh grade by now. If you have not, time is running out! It often takes months to get
an appointment for a physical exam. Please do so immediately so that you can turn in
the blue form to me by June 1, 2013. Remember, your child will not be allowed to enter
Silas Deane Middle School without the blue form completed and your child’s
immunizations up to date. Thank you to those of you who have already done this.

What Families Can Do:
Ideas to Help Your Child Succeed in and Enjoy Mathematics
1. Link Mathematics with Your Daily Life
Every day, people face situations that involve mathematics, such as deciding whether one has
enough money to purchase a list of items at the store, reading a map to find out where one is,
building a budget, deciding on the shortest route to a destination, developing a schedule, or
determining the price of an item on sale. Help your child realize that mathematics is a
significant part of your everyday life.
2. Be positive and Make Mathematics Fun!
Play board games, solve puzzles, and ponder brain teasers with your child. Point out the
mathematics involved, and have your child discuss the strategies he or she used. Help your
child have a “can do” attitude by praising your child’s efforts as well as his/her
accomplishments. Instead of, “You got a great grade on your test!” Try saying, “You worked
hard in this unit even when it was challenging and you made a lot of growth!” Realize the fact
that mathematics can be challenging at times and that persistence and hard work are the keys
to success. Relate mathematics learning to other activities that require hard work and
persistence, such as playing a sport or learning to play an instrument.
3. Support Homework, Don’t Do It!
Homework is an area that can cause trouble in many households. Relax, and remember whose
homework it is. If you take over doing homework for your child, you encourage him or her to
easily give up or seek help before trying a challenging problem. Teachers use homework to
help determine a student’s understanding of a concept. Mistakes on homework help the
teacher to know where a child is struggling. As you look over your child’s homework, please
encourage your child to show all work and put any corrections on the back of the homework
sheet or on a separate piece of paper.
Write like a Reader…
Literary Corner
Just as Readers Workshop promotes independent thoughtful readers, Writers Workshop promotes
independent thoughtful writers. Students spend a majority of classroom time putting paper to
pencil. They look to their own lives for inspiration and work through the writing process including
drafting, revising, publishing and celebrating!
The workshop model was designed to promote real-life writing experiences for students. Children
work through a basic format including an eight to ten minute mini-lesson. Then children get writing!
During this drafting time students confer with the teacher or with peers to revise and improve their
piece. They are continuously revising and editing to make their piece more effective. After the
writing has been carefully crafted, the student polishes the piece, a step that may include typing or
inserting pictures, to make it as strong as possible for final publication and celebration.
For example, students may receive a mini-lesson regarding how author’s put dialog in their writing.
The child then has an opportunity to look for places in his or her own writing where this technique
may be applied. Students have approximately 40 minutes per session to write independently as the
teacher confers with children individually. These individual conferences allow the teacher not only
to follow through on the mini-lesson, but the teacher is also able to provide personalized attention or
additional small group instruction. The teacher has an opportunity to help the student attempt other
techniques and considerations. The conference is often considered the “heart” of workshop. In
addition, students use proofreaders’ eyes making certain that grammar and spelling is accurate.
Children gain specific strategies that not only allow their piece to improve as it moves towards final
publication, but they are also able to build lifelong writing strategies. Furthermore, workshop time
allows for students to share thoughts and ideas with other writers in the class. Writers Workshop is
a time of independent work and collaboration.
All grade levels participate in Writers Workshop throughout the year. Following the launch of
Writers Workshop, each student creates a personal narrative, studies a genre (such as fairy tales or
myths), uses a professional author as a mentor, produces a nonfiction piece of writing, as well as
delving into the world of poetry. Regardless of the genre, students are using their own experiences,
interests and thoughts to create. Writers Workshop is authentic writing.
Encouraging writing at home does not always mean buying a special journal. Your student can
create a grocery list, write a friendly letter to grandma or compose a paragraph describing all the
reasons why you should increase his or her allowance! Real life makes real opportunities to write!
The Wethersfield Creative Arts Council presents Soro-Bindi! This performance
will come to Hanmer on Monday, October 15 th . Performances will be held for
students in grades k-3 at 9:15 and for students in grades 4-6 at 10:15.
Soro-Bindi is an exciting, interactive performance that incorporates traditional
Ghanaian dances, songs, stories and explanations of Ghanaian culture. Iddi
Saaka and his dance partner leads the children through various dances such as
the Kpanlogo dance and the Bawa harvest dance. Between dances, the students
learn about Ghana through multiple stories. Students are invited to play
traditional Ghanaian instruments and join together at the end for the big circle
dance. Soro-Bindi teaches students about Africa in general and Ghana in
particular. The performance encourages students to respect and appreciate
different cultures through an exploration of Ghana and its art.

Town-Wide Cross Country Run
The Town-Wide Cross Country Run, sponsored by the Wethersfield Physical
Education teachers, will be held on Thursday, October 4th, at Wethersfield High School. The
run will begin at 3:45 PM. All participants should arrive by 3:35 PM, and they are requested to
wear their school colors (navy blue & white).
Students in grades 4 through 6 will have the opportunity to run the one-mile course at
the high school. The event is organized as a developmentally appropriate activity that
reinforces much of the students’ current learning in physical education. Please encourage your
child to be a part of this fun afternoon.
Students who are interested in running need to fill out and return their permission slips to
Mr. Diaz by the day of the event. Transportation to and from the high school is the responsibility
of the parent or guardian. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Diaz.
School Calendar Survey
The Board of Education is currently considering two different options for the 2013/14
school calendar and is seeking parent input through an online survey. The first option is
a Traditional Calendar. It keeps both February and April vacation as it has been and
lets students out of school June 17th (assuming no snow days). The second option is
the Progressive Calendar. It has a long weekend in February and a weeklong spring
break starting March 31. This calendar lets students out by June 13 (assuming no snow
days) and allows for more instructional time before the CMTs/CAPTs.
To access the survey and share your opinion with the Board of Education, visit:
http://www.wethersfield.k12.ct.us/page.cfm?p=2538
It is possible the Board of Education will vote on the new calendar as early as next
Tuesday, September 25, so if you plan to participate in the survey, please do so soon.
