<strong>Performance</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Emissions</strong> <strong>Testing</strong><br />

MAHLE <strong>Powertrain</strong>'s dedicated state-of-the-art facilities at<br />

Northampton enable both prototype <strong>and</strong> production engines,<br />

as well as vehicles, to be built, instrumented <strong>and</strong><br />

tested.<br />

Engine Test<br />

The performance <strong>and</strong> emission testing facilities provide<br />

various levels of sophistication to cover a wide range of requirements;<br />

from cylinder head friction testing to legislative<br />

drive cycle simulation. Engines ranging from single to<br />

multi cylinders can be thoroughly tested using either steady<br />

state, motored or transient dynamometer capabilities.<br />

The test cells are fitted to conduct emissions <strong>and</strong> fuel economy<br />

development work as well as performance <strong>and</strong> durability<br />

testing on various automated cycles. The facilites<br />

provide the capability to run on gasoline, diesel or alternative<br />

fuels as a st<strong>and</strong>ard. Specialist testing includes friction<br />

measurement, vehicle exhaust gas aftertreatment system<br />

testing, tilt rig testing (with oil aeration measurement), valve<br />

train dynamic testing, coolant flow visualization <strong>and</strong> port<br />

flow measurement.<br />

Vehicle emissions testing<br />

Engine test facilities<br />

MAHLE <strong>Powertrain</strong>’s exhaust emissions testing services<br />

use the latest technology to keep pace with new legislation<br />

<strong>and</strong> industry dem<strong>and</strong>s (e.g. Euro 6, Tier 2). Our ambient<br />

<strong>and</strong> climatic test capabilities have been developed to meet<br />

current <strong>and</strong> future test requirements for a broad spectrum<br />

of development <strong>and</strong> certification work. Our experience allows<br />

us to help our customers find engineering solutions<br />

to meet the increasing pressure from governments <strong>and</strong> the<br />

public to control the impact of automotive pollution on the<br />

environment.<br />

Our facilities include an ambient chamber operational up to<br />

+50°C, <strong>and</strong> a climatic chamber capable of -40°C to +50°C.<br />

Each chamber has a 48” single-roll chassis dynamometer<br />

rated at 210 kW for vehicles up to 3,000 kg, running on<br />

gasoline, diesel, <strong>and</strong> alternative fuels. All world legislative<br />

cycles <strong>and</strong> custom drive cycles are supported. Analysis of<br />

both raw <strong>and</strong> dilute emissions is available, along with gasoline<br />

GDI <strong>and</strong> diesel particulate mass <strong>and</strong> count capability.<br />

The facility also includes a cold soak area capable of -40°C<br />

with space for up to 4 vehicles <strong>and</strong> a warm soak area, controlled<br />

to 25°C ± 2°C, which can accommodate up to 10<br />

vehicles.<br />
