89. Finally it is trusted that sanity will prevail when the DMR has to balance the interests<br />

of the exploitati<strong>on</strong> of marginal mineral deposits with that of active agricultural<br />

producti<strong>on</strong> and food security.<br />

ENVIRONMENTAL MATTERS<br />

90. The envisaged Prospecting Area is located north of the slopes of the Piketberg and is<br />

surrounded <strong>on</strong> its southern, eastern and western boundaries by the mountains.<br />

These mountains form a natural catchment area for the Krom Ant<strong>on</strong>ies River and the<br />

subterranean aquifers that provide water and life for the entire area right up to<br />

Elandsbay. To argue that the envisaged prospecting activities and the ultimate<br />

mining objectives would not negatively affect this invaluable eco-system c<strong>on</strong>stitutes,<br />

in the Objectors’ opini<strong>on</strong>, a complete disregard of the value of this catchment area. It<br />

is submitted that the drilling of 160 plus holes 250 m deep and traversing this area<br />

and the eventual developing of an open cast mine over an area of 55 ha shall lead to<br />

the ravaging of this life-giving eco-system, with irreversible c<strong>on</strong>sequences . To even<br />

suggest that complete rehabilitati<strong>on</strong> would be possible clearly portrays a total<br />

ignorance of the devastating effect the envisaged prospecting and the ultimate<br />

objective will have <strong>on</strong> the envir<strong>on</strong>ment. The Applicant however deems it not<br />

necessary to address this material issue.<br />

91. According to Cape Nature the prospecting area will have an effect <strong>on</strong> important<br />

fragments of indigenous vegetati<strong>on</strong>, including Leipoldtville and Fynbos (classified as<br />

endangered); Swartland Shale Renosterveld (classified as critically endangered);<br />

Piketberg Quartz Succulent Shrubland (classified as endangered); Piketberg<br />

Sandst<strong>on</strong>e Fynbos, Cape Lowland Alluvial Vegetati<strong>on</strong> (classified as critically<br />

endangered) and Cape Lowland Freshwater Wetlands.<br />

92. The impacts of the proposed activities will extend bey<strong>on</strong>d the prospecting area which<br />

is located at the source of the Verlorenvlei (Recognised as <strong>on</strong>e of 19 wetlands in<br />

South Africa of internati<strong>on</strong>al importance) <strong>on</strong>e of the largest natural wetlands al<strong>on</strong>g the<br />

West Coast of South Africa. Rather than being subjected to the negative impacts<br />

prospecting/mining shall have <strong>on</strong> the system, the activities in the Krom Ant<strong>on</strong>ies<br />
