Middle Tennessee State University has graduated 110,334 students 

since its inception in 1911. These students have received associate, 

bachelor’s, master’s, educational specialist, and doctoral degrees. 

Our first Doctor of Arts degrees were conferred on December 22, 1972, 

the first Educational Specialist degrees on December 20, 1974, 

and the first Doctor of Philosophy on May 10, 2003. 

There have been 397 Doctor of Arts degrees, 1,492 Educational Specialist 

degrees, and 106 Doctor of Philosophy degrees awarded. 

Although degree candidates are listed in this program by academic degree sought, 

their names are called alphabetically by colleges. The listing of degree candidates and the

Kim Neal Nofsinger 

Faculty Senate President 

2011–2012 

Kim Neal Nofsinger is a professor and director of the dance program in the 

Department of Speech and Theatre. He received a B.S. from the University of 

Wisconsin–La Crosse and an M.F.A. in performance and choreography from 

Arizona State University, where he holds the distinction of being the first graduate 

student to receive a grant from the Institute for Arts and Technology. He is artistic 

director of Shelter Repertory Dance Theatre, which he founded in 2001. Mr. 

Nofsinger is also artistic director of MTSU Dance Theatre and a dance instructor 

at the prestigious Interlochen Arts Camp near Traverse City, Michigan. His 

choreography has been produced throughout the United States and in Spain, 

France, Belgium, Germany, and Austria. Before MTSU, he taught at Ohio 

University, the University of Minnesota–Duluth, State University of 

New York–Geneseo, Illinois State University, Winona State University, and 

Connecticut College. 

Mr. Nofsinger specializes in teaching technique and choreography and is an advocate for the development of 

multicultural and interdisciplinary curriculum. Consistent in the range of this work are the premises that dances 

are evoked by an understanding of the human condition and that art should teach you more about yourself. 

He believes it is the responsibility of the artist to capture the truth of life and distill it into very tangible 

moments that reflect the nature of the human condition for the audience and the performer. In 1999, his duet 

“Permission” was selected by the American Dance Guild as one of the most outstanding works produced in the 

United States that year. In 2003, his evening-length work “A Pure White Room” was named Critics’ Choice for 

Best Dance Production, from a field of over 120 works, at the Minnesota Fringe Festival. Mr. Nofsinger received 

MTSU’s Award for Creative Achievement in 2008. He is the outgoing president of the MTSU Faculty Senate.

Mace and Chain of Office 

Originally a medieval knight’s weapon, the mace evolved 

into a symbol of royal scepters in various crown jewel 

collections. Large versions of the scepter have come to 

represent the power and authority of institutions such as 

our University. The mace measures 50 inches in length 

and is made of Tennessee cherry wood embellished with 

solid sterling silver and lapis lazuli. The Tennessee flower, 

the iris, denotes the public the University serves who, by 

their loyalty, give it strength and power. The leaves form a 

crown to symbolize the ennobling achievements of our 

graduates. Tennessee fresh water pearls, the official state 

gem, suggest the inestimable value of inquiring young 

minds. The streamer on the wood shaft carries the names 

by which the University has been known since its 

founding. The finial at the base of the mace is a stylized 

nut, representing the core, the seed from which springs 

the mighty tree of those committed to lifelong learning. 

The chain of office worn by the president is made of solid 

sterling silver. The lapis lazuli gems, mounted on scroll 

shapes, represent the colleges within the University. The 

knotted components depict the interdependence of 

knowledge and the various academic programs of MTSU. 

The sterling and lapis lazuli represent the University colors 

of blue and white. The Great Seal of the State of 

Tennessee embellishes the medallion suspended from the 

chain, representing the University as part of the Tennes see 

Board of Regents system. 

These unique emblems of authority were designed and 

crafted by Professor Klaus Kallenberger, formerly of the 

Art Department. The mace and chain of office are 

a generous gift to the University from the MTSU 

Foundation. 

Mace Carrier 

Ms. Melissa Wald is an assistant professor in the 

Department of Recording Industry, where she teaches 

Music Publishing, Music Publishing Administration, and 

Survey of the Recording Industry. She is the owner of 

Copyright Solutions, a consulting company that 

represents artists, songwriters, producers, and several 

independent record labels in matters of licensing and 

royalty calculation and collection. She has been involved 

in the design and testing of Right Track software for 

royalty calculation and catalog management and has 

served as one of only three certified trainers of that 

software in the world. Professionally, she has worked 

with several music publishing companies, representing 

songs and songwriters from country music and 

contemporary Christian music. Throughout her career, 

she has represented the songs of writers such as Alan 

Jackson, Amy Grant, Keith Urban, and Steven Dale 

Jones. She began her undergraduate studies at Baylor 

University as a piano and music education major but 

transferred to Belmont University to complete her B.B.A. 

(music business). She earned a master’s in adult 

education and distance learning from the University of 

Phoenix and is a member of SOURCE Nashville, the 

Copyright Society of the South, and the Leadership 

Music class of 2011.

The black gowns and colorful hoods traditionally worn in 

Middle Tennessee State University commencement 

ceremonies have their origins in the Middle Ages. 

A statute in England in 1321 required that all “Doctors, 

Licentiates, and Bachelors” wear gowns. In the second 

half of the 14th century, the statutes of certain colleges 

forbade “excess in apparel” and prescribed the wearing of 

a long gown. Scholars were often clerics as well, and they 

adopted costumes similar to those of monastic orders. 

While the special attire covered rank or social status, thus 

lending a uniform look to ceremonies, it also served 

another purpose: warmth in drafty, unheated buildings. 

As the universities began to pass from the control of the 

church, colors often were added to the somber robes and 

hoods, eventually signifying the degree and specialization. 

The cut of the gown, which is usually black, also varies 

with the degree held—pointed sleeves for the bachelor’s 

degree; long, closed sleeves with a slit in the arm for the 

master’s degree; and round, open sleeves for the doctoral 

degree. While the bache lor’s and master’s gowns have no 

ornamentation, the doctoral gown is faced down the front 

with velvet and has three velvet bars across the sleeves. 

At Middle Tennessee, hoods are worn by holders of 

the master’s and doctor’s degrees, with the latter being 

longer. Hoods are lined with the official colors of the 

university which confers the degree; thus holders of 

degrees from MTSU wear hoods lined in blue and white. 

The velvet edging on the hood, and often the velvet 

edging on the gown, represents the candidate’s major 

academic field. Often holders of the Doctor of Philosophy 

degree (Ph.D.) will be seen with regalia in dark blue 

instead of a color symbolic of their discipline. This is 

accepted academic dress. Further, the velvet lining on the 

gown may be the same color as the discipline color of the 

hood, or may be black. Colors associated with various

The black cap, the mortarboard, is customarily worn. 

There is no general rule for the position of the tassel. In 

practice at Middle Tennessee State University, the tassel is 

worn on the right. It may be shifted to the left after the 

degree is awarded. Men may remove their caps during 

prayer, the playing of the alma mater, and during the 

commencement address. 

Honor graduates are distinguished by the stoles added to 

their gowns: gold for those graduating summa cum laude, 

3.90 to 4.0 (overall grade point average); silver for magna 

cum laude, 3.75 to 3.89; and white for cum laude, 3.50 

to 3.74. Graduates with University Honors wear blue and 

white cords and have completed at least 31 hours with a 

3.25 average in the Honors program, a curriculum of 

special classes designed for superior students. Those who 

have maintained a minimum average of 3.65 in the 

Honors program are graduating with Distinction in 

University Honors. Honor graduates and persons 

graduating with University Honors, along with those who 

have been commissioned second lieutenant in the United 

States Army, are listed in this program after the degree 

recipients. 

Some academic honor societies and programs may 

provide cords, ribbons, medallions, or lapel pins designating 

the achievement and involvement of their members. 

Since 1993, graduates of the University Honors College 

have received the official Honors medallion in recognition 

of their final thesis defense and completion of special 

requirements of the college. The medallion itself is a 

two-dimensional replica of the official seal of the 

University Honors College and depicts a lighted torch, 

three Ionic columns, and a lightning bolt. Respectively, 

these symbolize the search for truth and knowledge, the 

stability and unwavering commitment to pursuing 

knowledge, and the flash of enlightenment or creative 

energy.

Experiential Learning Scholars are distinguished by blue, 

silver, and white cords. These scholars completed 

EXL-designated hands-on learning courses, an off-campus 

service activity, an on-campus service activity, and a 

portfolio of reflections on their EXL activities. The EXL 

program provides students with opportunities for 

hands-on experience, valuable networking, and an 

opportunity to explore career paths through real-world 

experience. 

International students may wear colorful sashes that are 

representative of their country of origin. Each sash 

symbolizes, in color and design, their country’s flag. 

Most American colleges and universities have adopted a 

uniform code. However, at any academic gathering, 

costumes often are worn that are not described by these 

guidelines. Some of these may be from foreign 

universities, others from American institutions that have 

preferred to remain with the European tradition of 

allowing each school to determine its own costume. 

Silver medallions worn by faculty denote 15 years of 

service, and gold medallions represent 25 years. 

Academic Banners 

The banners carried and displayed at commencement 

represent the University; its nine colleges (Basic and 

Applied Sciences, Behavioral and Health Sciences, 

Business, Education, Liberal Arts, Mass Communication, 

Graduate Studies, University College, and University 

Honors); and Walker Library. Design and execution of the 

banners was a collaborative effort among Professor Janet 

Higgins, Art Department; her student Kristi Baughman; 

and Darrell Callis Burks, designer in Creative and Visual 

Services and 2000 B.F.A. graduate. The colors used in 

each banner represent disciplines within the colleges. The 

University seal centers each banner, symbolizing that the 

whole is greater than any of its parts. 

BANNER CARRIERS 

College of Graduate Studies 

Dr. Amy Hennington is an assistant professor in the 

Department of Computer Information Systems. She 

received her Ph.D. in management information systems 

from the University of Memphis in 2008. During her 

time in Memphis, she worked for the FedEx Center for 

Supply Chain Management, where she gained firsthand 

experience helping organizations transition between 

project management methodologies for new product 

development. Her consulting experience includes work 

with FedEx, Methodist LeBonheur Healthcare, Emerson 

Heating Products, and many nonprofit and governmental 

organizations. She received her master’s in computer 

information systems from MTSU and her B.A. from 

Mississippi University for Women. Her teaching and 

research interests include information technology project 

management and healthcare information systems. 

College of Basic and Applied Sciences 

Dr. Earl Pearson is a retired professor of chemistry and 

former chair of the Department of Chemistry, where he 

regularly taught General Chemistry I and II. Dr. Pearson 

came to MTSU in 1998 following a teaching career at 

Western Kentucky University that spanned 28 years. 

He received his B.S. and M.A. degrees from Western 

Kentucky University and a Ph.D. in chemical physics 

from Vanderbilt University. He did postdoctoral research 

at the University of Southern California and worked 

briefly as a research chemist for Shell Oil Company 

before beginning a teaching career that lasted 42 years. 

He worked eight summers as a “rocket scientist” for 

NASA and Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama. He 

has been regularly published in the Journal of Chemical 

Education, and his most recent contribution compares 

the energy, power, and power density of 2008’s Hurricane 

Ike, a 15-kiloton TNT explosive charge, and Little 

Boy (one of the atomic bombs used in World War II). 

He holds copyright on a demonstration kit for Millikan’s 

Oil-Drop Experiment; the kit helps students understand, 

by analogy, how to discover the charge of an electron.

College of Behavioral 

and Health Sciences 

Mr. Paul Williamson came to MTSU in the fall of 2011. 

He teaches clinical pharmacology for nurses in the School 

of Nursing. He earned his M.S. in nursing from Vanderbilt 

University in 2002 with a specialization as an acute care 

nurse practitioner. Mr. Williamson began his academic 

career at the University of Arizona College of Nursing. 

From there, he created and opened a new associate’s 

degree (R.N.) nursing program for a private medical 

career school in Tucson. He is now completing his Ph.D. 

in nursing education. He studies trends in the nursing 

workforce, pain management modalities, nurse faculty 

development, and pharmacology. 

Jennings A. Jones College of Business 

Dr. Adam D. Rennhoff, assistant professor of economics, 

joined the MTSU faculty in 2007. He received a B.A. 

from Bucknell University and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the 

University of Virginia. He teaches microeconomics and 

econometrics at the undergraduate and doctoral levels. 

He has served on numerous dissertation committees. Dr. 

Rennhoff’s research focuses on the impact of competition 

and market structure on various market outcomes. 

He was chosen to write two studies on media ownership 

for the Federal Communications Commission’s recent 

Quadrennial Review of Media Ownership Rules. These 

studies examine the relationships between local media 

ownership, media quality, and viewpoint diversity in 

local news. Dr. Rennhoff has presented his research at 

numerous regional, national, and international conferences. 

College of Education 

Dr. Charlene J. True is an associate professor in the 

Womack Family Educational Leadership Department. She 

teaches at the graduate level, working with students in 

the administrative licensure program. She received a B.S. 

from Tennessee Tech University and an M.A., two Ed.S. 

degrees, and an Ed.D. from the University of Alabama. 

She joined MTSU in 2005 after serving as a teacher and 

principal in Alabama. She regularly presents papers at 

national and international conferences and publishes 

articles in professional journals. In 2009, she presented a 

paper at the Oxford Round Table. 

College of Liberal Arts 

Ms. Linda Seward is a communication studies professor 

in the Department of Speech and Theatre. She served 

in the Air Force for four years before earning degrees 

in communication at the University of North Texas, 

San Diego State University, and Purdue University. Her 

teaching and research interests are focused on crosscultural 

communication. She was awarded a Malone 

Fellowship in 1995, was selected for an ASIANetwork 

program in 1996, and received a faculty development 

grant in 2008 to study the cultures of Saudi Arabia, 

Oman, Japan, and Turkey. A strong supporter of study 

abroad programs, she has taught American students in 

Italy, France, and England. She is working on a research 

project investigating the views of Muslim women on the 

role of women in society and religion. 

College of Mass Communication 

Mr. Matt Foglia is an associate professor in the 

Department of Recording Industry. He holds a B.S. in 

music technology from the University of North Carolina– 

Asheville and a master’s in music technology from New 

York University, where he was also an adjunct instructor. 

Before joining MTSU in 2008, he was a 14-year veteran 

of the NYC sound-for-picture industry, working as an 

audio engineer for Sony Music Studios before taking the 

post of chief audio engineer for PostWorks NY in 2001. 

Mr. Foglia has mixed sound for hundreds of hours of TV 

programming for networks such as Bravo, Comedy 

Central, Discovery, ESPN, HBO, MTV, PBS, truTV and 

VH1. Having a strong musical background, he has 

worked on numerous music-based TV and DVD projects 

for artists including Ozzy Osbourne, My Morning 

Jacket, Phish, and Coldplay. He has two Emmy Award 

nominations including one for a Paul McCartney TV 

special. Mr. Foglia also has four Cinema Audio Society 

Award nominations including two wins for a Bruce 

Springsteen television project and a different Paul 

McCartney project. He was the sound mixer for the 

2007 Grammy Award–winning Best Long Form Video, 

Wings for Wheels, which documented the making of 

Bruce Springsteen’s Born to Run album. He has recorded 

many actors and artists including Harrison Ford, Kirsten 

Dunst, Diana Ross, Dave Matthews, Whoopi Goldberg, 

Edie Falco, and Dave Chappelle as well as Oscar winners 

Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins. Professor Foglia 

currently mixes sound for World’s Dumbest…, a TV 

series on truTV.

University College 

Dr. David Alan Otts is a professor in the Department of 

University Studies, where he teaches mathematics and 

has taught both writing and study strategies. He has over 

25 years of service to MTSU and is also active in state and 

national professional organizations. He holds a B.A., an 

M.A., and an Ed.D from the University of Alabama and is a 

Fellow of the Kellogg Institute. He also serves as the NADE 

Certification Council communications coordinator. 

University Honors College 

Dr. Shelley Thomas received a B.A. from Clemson 

University, an M.A. from the University of South Carolina, 

and a Ph.D. in French literature from Purdue University. She 

began teaching at MTSU in 1991. Her articles and book 

reviews on nineteenth-century authors appear in the Gale- 

Thomson Encyclopedia on Short Story Criticism, Romanic 

Review, L’ Esprit Créateur, and Philosophy and Literature. 

Her current research on brain-based learning has been 

presented at national and regional conferences. She is the 

founder and director of the Center for Accelerated Language 

Acquisition (CALA), which has formed partnerships for 

language classes and teacher training with public school 

systems, the Department of Social Services, and the Isha 

Foundation, a nonprofit organization in southern India. 

Walker Library 

Ms. Amy York is a librarian and associate professor in the 

User Services department of Walker Library, where she 

has served since 2004. In her current role, she teaches 

students how to use library resources and manages the 

library website. Her research interests concern the online 

library experience and open-access publishing. Ms. 

York is editor of the journal Tennessee Libraries and is a 

reviewer for the Journal of Learning Spaces.
