CREDIT: @rfleetwood Prescription processing center upgrade will help thousands By Airman 1st Class Veronica Ward Academy Spirit staff writer Academy firefighters volunteer for 6-month deployment The Pikes Peak Joint Refill Processing Center at the Academy, the first Joint Army and Air Force refill pharmacy in the Defense Department, completed a $1.2 million system upgrade last week to allow the center to process 5,000 prescriptions daily. “This is an amazing system that will ensure the 171,000 beneficiaries in the Colorado Springs area continue to receive high-quality, prompt, pharmacy refills,” said Lt. Col. Gregory Feltenberger, the 10th Medical Support Squadron commander. “More than 70 percent of refill workload is completed by the JRPC and the staff includes a mixture of personnel from all the local military treatment facilities - truly making this a very successful joint activity.” The JRPC used a robotic system, installed in 2004, to refill prescriptions for Academy, Peterson Air Force Base, Buckley AFB and Evans Army Medical Center customers, said Lt. Col. Melissa Howard, the 10th Medical Support Squadron pharmacy flight commander. “Refills are provided through the AudioCare automated telephone system instead of people having to drive to the pharmacy and wait,” she said. The processing center used robotics to fill and label prescriptions; couriers collect the refills and deliver them to the various base pharmacies in the Colorado Springs area for costumers to pick up the next day, Howard said. “The upgrade includes robotic arms being replaced with ones that run more smoothly, lengthening the conveyor belt and adding a checking station,” she said. “This will allow us to keep up with the current workload and take on more in the future.” The refill system offers huge savings in manpower and reduces human error, with checks and balances in place to add an extra layer of safety, Howard said. It also leaves space in the pharmacies for customers waiting to get a new prescription filled. Currently, the JRPC is staffed by 13 contract and civilian employees who process approximately 600,000 prescriptions annually, a 70 percent increase in customer service from 2004, when a staff of 10 processed approximately 180,000 prescriptions annually, Howard said. By Amber Baillie Academy Spirit staff writer Six Academy firefighters deployed to Kyrgyzstan earlier this month to support Operation Enduring Freedom. The Airmen, assigned to the 10th Civil Engineer Squadron Fire Department, all volunteered for the six-month deployment to Manas Air Base. “I think they all see it as an opportunity to contribute to their nation,” said Ken Helgerson, 10th CES fire chief. The Airmen will serve their country in a vastly different environment than they’ve experienced at the Academy, to include working on and around a flight-line, Helgerson said. “When they deploy, they go back to a traditional 10,000- foot runway and deal with other components related to aircraft that they don’t necessarily see at the Academy, such as refueling and unique hazards of working on a flight line,” he said. The firefighters will also focus on their professional development while deployed. “They’re not just there responding to incidents,” Helgerson said. “They’re participating in upgrade training and earning additional certifications. We also have them call back once a week to capture their activity.” The deployed Academy firefighters are Staff Sgt. Barry McNeil, Senior Airmen Steven Rousseau, Donnie Brown, Sean Kaufmann, Tylor King and Airman 1st Class Daniel Garcia. Firefighters across the Air Force have nicknamed Manas Air Base “Peter J. Ganci Air Base” after Ganci, the highestranking New York City firefighter to be killed in the 9/11 attacks, Helgerson said. Charles Cleveland shakes hands with Cadet 1st Class Valerie Bachand at the Staff Tower in Mitchell Hall Tuesday. Cleveland visited the Academy as part of the Defense Department’s “Year of the Korean Veteran” program, designed to thank and honor Korean War veterans, and spoke with history majors about his Korean War experience.
