Another Beautiful Day of Sailing in the Monterey Bay
Hi to everyone at EYC:
In my near 20,000 miles of sailing my UK Hasley genoa received terrible
abuses. Mechanical failure off the Cook Islands prevented furling in a
violent storm that drove Radiance backwards and sideways eighteen
miles in five hours. I lost control of a jib sheet which then wrapped itself
around the port sheet. All I could do was hang on and watch my genoa
loosing it's integrity.
Still the sail held, getting me to NZ. Months later,in-route to Fiji, a microburst
hit Radiance with estimated wind at 70 to 80 knots for 15 to 18
seconds. I came very close to a knockdown. The jib did not survive. It
ripped from head to foot. Twenty-four days later,I arrived in Fiji and had
the sail repaired, but was told the jib could not survive 30 knot winds.
I sailed from Majuro Atoll, Marshall Islands last June. I got caught by a
squall before I could furl the jib. I stopped at Utirik Atoll to patch a three
foot rip. On June 10, I headed North to get up around the Pacific High:
destination Moss Landing. Just north and west of the Hawian Islands I
got caught with my pants down (so to speak) and the genoa ripped top to
bottom.
Sixty-six days later I arrived at Kodiak Island, Ak.sailing by the mail sail
and a tiny piece of jib (the size of a pillow case). I made the decision to
head for Alaska.( 2700 miles to Portland, Ore. or 850 to Kodiak...running
low on food; it was a no brainer).
I lost about 14 pounds and was very weak. It took several weeks to get
my strength back. I e-mailed John Hearn and ordered a 100% jib. That
would get me to Moss Landing. John called me. I think he said I will see
what I can do.
John e-mailed, writing that he was sending me my new jib. at no charge.
WOW! Some weeks later, I received my new jib, shipping prepaid.
Thank-you UK Halsey and John Hearn
Happy Holidays to all: John Davis S/V Radiance II .
Happy New Year to all! I hope all your holiday wishes came
true. I am just happy we are through them. We had a good
work party on Dec 17, and got quite a few things done.
However you know there is always more to be done. The club
needs painting, the club sign over the patio needs painting,
and all bathrooms need painting. With planning big events
such as this years Boreas race, it will take many helping hands
to make our Jewel shine in the eyes of others. The board will
be busy this new year. We have a retreat planned so we can
revamp our bylaws and rules and policy's. We are planning on
working in 2 groups at 2 different locations. We shall work
through a weekend to accomplish this mission. We are looking
for volunteers who have an interest in this revision. We are
hoping to finish this so we can let our members see them,
then have a vote on them at our next semi annual meeting.
This next six months will go by in a blur for me. Between
working with the board, working on my boat, and working on
Blue Mist for the Pacific Cup race. Dave Nichols has told me
about a few items of interest coming up. One will be a Celestial
Navigation class, which will be taught by member Dan Davis,
not sure of the date yet. Then Dave is having a very fancy
Wine and dinner party coming up, where all food will be paired
with the wine, by a fancy French chef.
Ok last is our fundraiser, Monte Carlo Night.
The board has decided
that all money collected
for this event will go towards
replacing the refrigerator
behind the bar. We
are losing precious energy
with the current one because
it has rotted away.
So bring your money and
lets keep making headway
on revitalizing the club.
See you on the water!
WORK PARTY UPDATE
Dale
Commodore EYC
Another successful work party! We had the bulk of the board helping to plow
through our list. We shaved doors, cleaned toilet plugs and put taps on the bottom
of chair legs. Members cleaned gutters , worked the garden area and replaced
batteries in accessible smoke detectors. We had additional exit signs posted
as well as pines trimmed . The chimney received a temporary arrester while
the space under the west side stairs was thoroughly cleaned out. The door handle
and lock in the fireplace room was fixed and several patio chairs painted, .
The south side Annex and west side Club House were both thoroughly caulked
and the archive room had numerous (stored ) items moved to the garbage along
with other sorted items left around the Cub.
My gracious thanks to Dale Jarred, Bryan Ellis, Stan Jacques, Wim Sprenger,
Meredith and Disun den Daas, Shar and Aaron Gregg , Mark Pastick, Janice
D'arcy and Todd Otis for all your hard work and committed efforts. As always
thank you Jean for the tasty lunch. Dianella Nunes

VICE COMMODORE’S REPORT
“Frequently the more trifling the subject,
the more animated and protracted
the discussion"
Franklin Pierce 1804-1869
As of Dec. 22 nd the days started to get
longer. I remember up in Alaska that a
day everyone knew was the day in December
that marked the turning point
of winter. In ancient times up until a
couple of hundred years ago it was
celebrated with festivities that involved,
drinking, eating and dancing.
That’s not to say that ole man winter
was done for, because there were still
months ahead of rain, snow, sleet and
hail. It was the idea that better days,
warm weather, and sunshine would
eventually prevail. Here in California
we don’t notice that as much as people
living in more northern climates. Why
just the other day we went out sailing
in beautiful sunshine and a balmy 55
degrees. Time flies and spring and
summer will soon be knocking on our
door. We already have committees
planning for events way ahead of time.
So if anyone has any ideas for an event
that is a few months away, now is the
time to let the Board know. And the
best way to do that is to come to the
meetings.
Our membership drive is still operating.
On January 11 th we will set up a
booth at the Naval Postgraduate
School to introduce ourselves to new
students.
We have also let prospective members
interested in sailing know that they we
have cruising and racing teams that
meet several times a month and that
anyone can join.
In 2012 more funds will be allocated
to repairing the annex and the
clubhouse. At the December meeting
the Board voted to purchase
new coolers for the bar and will be
looking into replacing some doors
on the annex building. Maintaining
the income producing properties of
the club is of high importance. We
have had a fairly decent increase in
the number of events and reinvesting
that income back into the facilities
will add to future worth.
When traveling to different countries
it helps to know some of the
basic language of the country visited.
Not everyone speaks English,
especially in the countryside and
smaller towns. Some of the core
basic language skills needed are
learning how to ask directions and
understand the answers, buying
and bargaining, translating the
types of food listed on a menu at a
restaurant and labels at a grocery
store. Having these skills can make
a trip to a foreign country a lot
more pleasurable. There are tourist
guidebooks that in each section of
different countries list a lot of these
phrases. But if one is going to
spend more than a couple of days
in a specific country, it is better to
expand on those rudimentary
phrases. Some people in meeting
an American will want to expand
on their English and speak to you
in English.
Of course this is a great opportunity
to ask that person questions
about their language and how to
pronounce certain words correctly.
No matter where one goes, it
does impress the locals that a
foreigner has learned and is interested
in learning some of
their language skills. There is
one trick that I did in my
younger days, which I don’t
recommend now. In Yugoslavia
I picked up three hitchhikers in
my VW Camper that were traveling
to Istanbul. Transiting
Yugoslavia, Bulgaria and Turkey
was very easy as some of
these guys spoke up to five different
languages. On arrival in
Istanbul they clued me in to a
lot of good places to go that
normal tourists don’t travel.
Also in one small town in Yugoslavia
where we overnighted,
the locals gave us one heck of a
party. All I can say is that learning
the language of the country
visited can bring ample rewards.
BOREAS RACE 2012
The Boreas Race is in the planning stages for 2012. So far the
race will be from the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge to
Moss Landing with an overnight in Half Moon Bay. Entrants
can enter any of three stages of the race: the first half from SFO
to HMB, the second half from HMB to the EYC or the whole
two parts of the race from SFO to EYC.
Entry fees will be $65 no matter if one decides to enter both
legs or each leg. There will be a late registration fee of $30 sometime
in June for all you procrastinators..
The race will begin Saturday, June 30 th and end Sunday, July
1 st . Parties are being planned to occur the day before the start of
the race in the Bay Area, at the overnight in HMB and at the
finish at the EYC.. (More details later)
So dust off the cobwebs on those racing sails, select a crew,
polish that hull, and get ready, for the race is only six months
away.

REAR-COMMODORE’S REPORT
I hope everyone had a fun and safe holiday.
Thank all those who participated in
decorating the fire room and filling the
room with the Christmas spirit. I witnessed
Vice Commodore Rex Keys
climbing up and down a ladder with several
opinionated “tree decoration experts”
giving him advice from the floor.
Thanks Rex….but the tree topper is still
a bit crooked.
The winter solstice has past and
the days are getting longer and the New
Year is upon us in full stride. 2011 will
go down as the most memorable year in
my life….I got married, received a bachelor
of science in business administration,
purchased my first house, visited
coffee cooperatives in Nicaragua, and
honeymooned in Curacao. I’m living the
American dream and I’m very excited
for 2012 and it is going to be a great year
as well. The most exciting item on my
2012 agenda is to participate in the Pacific
Cup onboard David Nichol’s 32’ Pearson
Vangaurd. The Pacific Cup (PAC
CUP) is a sailing
regatta across the Pacific Ocean
from San Francisco to Kaneohe
Bay Hawaii. The race starts soon
after the Boreas in July and should
be most memorable and amazing
event. Thank you, Captain David
Nichols, for allowing me to be a
part of the crew. Commodore Dale
Jerred and two other members are
also slated to participate in the ≈
2,300 mile journey and represent
Elkhorn with three yacht club burgees
flying proud. All members
who are interested in keeping track
of your EYC horse during the regatta
will have several options to
get real time video and race updates.
I will publish more information
as the race gets closer. If
you want to learn more about the
Pacific Cup, visit the website @
www.pacificcup.org.
The board met in December
and attempted to set a Guinness
world record for longest board
meeting at nearly
12,000 seconds. Joking aside, we were
able to get a lot of work accomplished
and moving forward into 2012. The
floor seats were a bit empty though and
I want to encourage more members to
come and participate in the monthly
board meetings. The meetings take
place every 2 nd Tuesday of the month
starting @ 7pm in the club dining room.
The meetings generally run for about
two hours and all members are welcome
and encouraged to listen and comment
on all the great things we are working
on.
Cheers, Bryan Ellis, Rear Commodore
Rear Commodore, Bryan Ellis and his wife Laurissa, check the rigging on their boat.
