Laboratory: At a minimum you must perform all of the LabWorks experiments and the six
instrumental experiments and turn in, in a timely manner, a laboratory report for each of these six
experiments. Failure to comply will result in a grade of an F. In addition, you are required to
attend all the pre-lab discussions. You will not be allowed to conduct an experiment if you fail to
attend a prelab discussion for a corresponding experiment, which results in a grade F for the
class. You must also consecutively attend all lab periods until your experiment is completed.
You should read all background material and lab handouts before coming to the lab. You will be
quizzed on the material to check your preparedness. If the TA determines that students from a
particular group are unprepared for the experiment, they will be asked to leave the lab until such
preparation can be completed and demonstrated. Five points will be taken from the points for the
corresponding lab if you are 10-15 minutes late; you will have a 20-point reduction if you are 15-
30 minutes late. You will receive a zero point for the experiment if you are more than 30 minutes
late. Work must cease 10 minutes before the end of the lab and you must leave the lab by the end
of the period with no exceptions. There are no make-up labs for the experiments!
Grading: Your grade will be based upon the following:
LabWorks: 100 points (30 points for performance and 70 points for oral presentation)
Instrumental Experiments: 6 at 150 points each, 900 points
10 points for pre-lab discussion
20 points for pre-lab quiz
20 points for performance*
100 points for the report writeup*
Lecture: 100 points (20 points for attendance; 80 points for quiz and homework). No late
assignments will be accepted.
Notebook (turn in with each lab report and at end of semester), 150 points
Final Exam: 200 points
Total Points: 1450 points
There is no curve for this course. Your final letter grade is determined directly from your total
score for the semester. A: 90 or better, B: 80 or better, C: 70 or better, D: 60 or better. Any score
below 59 corresponds to F.
*If a student as part of a group does not assist to a reasonable degree (i.e. the experiment takes
two days but one group member is absent on one day) then that student will forfeit ½ the
performance score and ½ the data analysis points, which is variable depending on the identity of
the lab. A student not present for the entire lab will receive 0 points.
Academic Dishonesty: In all work (examinations, quizzes, laboratory data and reports) you
must adhere to the guidelines regarding academic honesty as described in the UIC Student
Handbook.
No academic dishonesty will be tolerated! A student who will be caught and proven to have
committed an act of academic dishonesty on any homework set, quiz or examination, will
receive a zero for the particular item and will automatically fail the course. The dishonest student
will be reported to the Head of the Chemistry Department and to the Dean of the School of
Liberal Arts and Science.
