National Library of Medicine
Through continuous information innovation, the National
Library of Medicine (NLM) provides free, worldwide access
to the newest health information for healthcare practitioners,
researchers, and the public. NLM’s expansive online resources
range from MedlinePlus.gov, providing trusted, up-to-date
medical information to the public, to GenBank, a database of
all known DNA sequences. Selected resources from the world’s
largest medical library include:
n PubMed, a database of over 20 million citations from
biomedical journals
n MedlinePlus and other free resources for the public,
including the Household Products Database and
Genetics Home Reference
n ClinicalTrials.gov, a searchable registry and results
database of over 100,000 clinical trials
n A 12 million-item collection and 84 freely accessible
medical databases
n Key information for health providers during national
disasters
n Coordination of the National Network of Medical
Libraries
n Promotion of medicine’s history and culture through
travelling and online exhibits
n Support for researchers finding the newest ways to

Friends of the National
Library of Medicine
To support and promote NLM, the Friends of the National
Library of Medicine (FNLM) works to increase funding for
NLM programs and advocate for NLM among professional
organizations, the public, and Congress. Health professionals
know that NLM is an essential resource for medical
information and research. But, today, too few Americans know
that NLM offers complete, trusted, up-to-date, and free health
information for the public from the National Institutes of
Health. FNLM seeks to change this. In addition to providing
general support and advocacy for NLM, FNLM partners with
NLM and other organizations to conduct programs that align
with NLM’s mission and goals. These include:
NIH MedlinePlus and Salud Magazines:
These free, consumer health magazines,
created and published by FNLM and NIH,
report on advances in health research and
provide practical healthcare information
for consumers. The magazines increase the
visibility of the MedlinePlus.gov Web site
and provide the gold standard of reliable,
up-to-date health information, completely
advertising-free. Currently, up to 500,000
copies of each issue of NIH MedlinePlus
are distributed to physicians’ offices and
medical libraries nationwide, members of
Congress, and consumers. The magazine’s
bilingual version, NIH MedlinePlus Salud,
brings health information to the nation’s
growing Hispanic population.
Annual Awards Gala:
The FNLM Annual Awards
Gala is held to recognize elected
officials, medical scientists, medical
librarians, and public figures who
are pioneering medical researchers
or demonstrated leaders in
increasing awareness and support of
important health issues.

Librarian Award to Rita B. Smith of the Mercer University Medical Library.
Annual Conference:
FNLM and NLM co-host
annual conferences that
highlight advances in
informatics that improve
health and medical research,
held at the National Institutes
of Health in Bethesda,
Maryland. Conference topics
include Personal Electronic
Health Records (2009); The
e-Patient (2010); and Clinical
Trials (2011). The conferences
feature presentations by
experts in the field, and provided crosscutting perspectives from
government, industry, health centers and research.
Minority Outreach:
FNLM and NLM provide
cooperative support and
programming for the
Mentoring in Medicine
program, which aims to
diversify the healthcare
workforce by mentoring and
exposing underrepresented
students to health careers.
The program offers one day
symposia on health care
careers to several thousand
high school students; provides
a two-year after school course
on human biology and disease to around one hundred students
in six high schools in Harlem and the Bronx, as well as an inschool
course on health careers at two schools; and helps college
students prepare applications to health graduate programs.
