Promoting Tourism inWashington County
Be sure to stop by the new Washington County Visitor Center inside the
restored Simon Theatre in historic Downtown Brenham (115 W. Main St).
Tourists bring dollars to our community, shop in beautiful downtown stores, enjoy our many
area restaurants and overnight in area hotels and bed & breakfast lodging properties.
The staff works closely with group tours and convention groups and attends trade shows
to promote Brenham and Washington County. They provide “welcome gift bags” to motor
coach tours, conference attendees and VIP delegations visiting the county. Promoting destination
weddings in Washington County is also an area of marketing focus. The CVB partners
with other agencies, associations and businesses, as needed, to promote this very special
destination. The work of the CVB benefits every resident and every business, whether or not
tourism-related.
CVB staff members also annually prepare a marketing plan and budget separate from the
Chamber’s budget that the city’s Hotel Occupancy Tax board must approve and recommend
to the City for adoption before any hotel occupancy tax dollars are expended. The use of
these tax dollars is strictly governed by State Tax Code and, in general, must be devoted to
advertising and public relations efforts that promote visitors, tourists and conventions to
come to Brenham and Washington County.
In December 2010 the Visitor Center and CVB staff moved to their new location in the
1925 Simon Theatre building at 115 West Main in downtown Brenham. The theatre lobby, visitor
center and retail space are the first beneficiaries of the planned Simon restoration. The
old theatre and upstairs ballroom will also be restored to provide space for meetings, parties,
conferences and other activities.
The efforts of the Chamber’s CVB are focused
and directed to promoting Washington County...
as a great destination for fun, adventure, and relaxation.
Brenham is not only a
wonderful place to reside -
it’s a great place to visit.
That’s where the Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) steps
in. Operated by the Washington County Chamber of Commerce
under a contract with the City of Brenham, the CVB serves numerous
functions.
Besides assembling the annual Visitor Guide filled with the
unique and interesting attractions and tourism-related businesses
that Washington County has to offer, the staff of the CVB also places
advertising to attract visitors, convention delegates, tourists and
conference attendees to the area. Along with the advertising program,
the CVB creates publicity and promotions to generate public
awareness of events, activities and all that the city and county have
to offer.

newsletters deliver the latest Chamber and community news directly
to members and civic leaders throughout the county and region. The

Leadership Washington County
Leadership Washington County (LWC) is a prestigious
ten-month program committed to educating, training and motivating
existing and emerging leaders to build more effective
skills for the future benefit of Washington County. Nearly 300
men and women have graduated from LWC, and the fifteenth
session is now in progress. Applications are accepted each year
from June 1 through July 20.
Program Goals
• To educate, train and provide experiences that enhance
leadership skills.
• To provide opportunities for participants to develop
lasting relationships among community leaders.
• To provide greater awareness of community issues and
opportunities to serve locally.
• To provide greater access to community resources and
networking.
• To motivate participants to help make a difference in our
community by becoming actively involved.
Each year, the program begins in August with an orientation
followed by a team-building retreat. Day-long sessions are held
once a month from August through May.
LWC participants attend educational sessions covering many
aspects of this community and region. The sessions create an
awareness of the resources of Washington County and put the
class in contact with local experts in various fields. Participants
gain valuable experience from interacting with each other and
forming lasting relationships with other professionals.
Employers are encouraged to send key personnel through
the class, and then benefit by having an employee who has
sharper skills, knowledge of resources in the county, and connections
with other local leaders.
The LWC program involves a time commitment of one day a
month for ten months and a tuition fee ($580) that covers all
tours, meals, group travel and supplies. The program culminates
with a graduation banquet in May.

Stephen F. Austin chose the area between
the Brazos and Colorado Rivers for his
original settlers because it was fertile land
and it was a beautiful land. Washington
County is truly the “birth place of Texas” and
has played an important pivotal part in the
history of Texas. Many historic sites and
museums in Washington County offer a
glimpse of that history and help to tell the
story of early Texas.
It is not just the beauty and the history that
make Washington County special. The
people make it special. Yes, there are direct
descendants of the original settlers but most
of us are those who have chosen Washington
County for their home and are a down to
earth, friendly, charitable people who will
make your visit special and you will be glad
you had a chance to meet.

In the rolling hills of western Washington
County you will find this charming little town
of 359 friendly, hospitable citizens. This
wonderful city called Burton was established
in the mid 1870’s. It has many historical
treasures. Among them are a restaurant with
French cuisine, several antique shops, a bed
and breakfast, and a down home country café.
Tourist and sightseers are also attracted to
the old railroad depot and former lumber yard.
Burton is home of “The Official Cotton Gin
Mueseum oof Texas” with the historic 1914 gin
as the key exhibit.
The friendly residents will always welcome
strangers, new businesses, and residents. It
would be a pleasure to see you in Burton soon.

As the Texas State Senator who represents Washington County in the Texas
Legislature, I would like to say welcome. As the "Birthplace of Texas" and the
county named after the first President, George Washington, Washington
County is an area rich in history. It was right here in Washington County, along
the banks of the Brazos River, that in 1836 Sam Houston and others signed
the Texas Declaration of Independence, severing ties to Mexico and declaring
Texas a free and independent state.
Washington County's scenic rolling hills and seasonal wildflowers are a
beautiful backdrop for the area's generations-old farmlands, two wineries,
the world famous Blue Bell Creamery, and numerous historic museums.

Health Care
Brenham residents are fortunate to have
many excellent choices for health care
providers: from hospitals and clinics to a wide

article, you can read about the three major
systems in our local health care community.
Scott & White Hospital-Brenham,
part of the nationally-recognized Scott &
White Healthcare System, provides
Washington County residents with a unique
combination of small-town attention and
world-class care.
As our community continues to grow, Scott
& White Hospital–Brenham will continue to
provide the highest quality acute care
services for Washington County and the
surrounding area. The hospital plays a critical
role in Southeast Texas healthcare as it is the
only trauma center on U.S. Highway 290
between Houston and Austin.
Scott and White’s healthcare services in
Brenham are constantly evolving and
improving in order to meet the needs of the
community. In 2010, Scott & White completed
renovations for a new cardiac lab, offering a
complete diagnostic stress testing menu that
includes exercise stress tests, pharmacologically
induced stress tests, nuclear stress
tests, echocardiograms, as well as arterial and
venous Doppler exams. In 2011, Scott & White
opened a state-of-the-art Imaging Center
offering bone density testing as well as digital
mammography.
Happiness lies, first of all, in
health.
A $5.9 million medical office complex,
Scott & White Professional Center One,
opened on the hospital’s campus in 2009. The
30,000-square-foot facility is now home to the Scott & White Hwy. 290
Clinic with physicians specializing in primary care, cardiology,
orthopedics, and internal medicine.
The hospital’s emergency department is designated a Level III
general trauma center, meeting standards set by the Texas Department
of State Health Services. As a Level III facility, Scott & White has the
staff, physicians and facilities capable of caring for a variety of
emergency patients, without requiring transfers to larger facilities. Over
14,000 patients are seen annually.
Scott & White’s Birth Center provides a beautiful backdrop for
“Special Deliveries.” A variety of services and courses are available

infant security system and a state-of-the-art
fetal monitoring system. The Birth Center staff
has more than 500 years of combined nursing
experience and a passion to provide the best
care for both moms and babies.
The hospital also offers a complete menu
of surgical procedures, both inpatient and
outpatient. Some of the newest procedures
offered in the hospital’s Surgical Center
include: quad-sparing knee replacements,
coblation tonsillectomies, and minimallyinvasive
laser prostate surgery.
The specialists providing the procedures
include: general surgeons, a children’s dentist,
orthopedic surgeons, ophthalmologists,
otolaryngologists (ear, nose and throat),
OB/GYNs, podiatrists and urologists.
Scott & White Hospital, Scott & White Family
Practice, Scott & White Hwy. 290 Clinic, Scott &
White Wellness Center, Sleep Diagnostics, and
the S&W Physical Rehabilitation Center all
participate in a rigorous survey process and
are accredited by the Joint Commission on
Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
Scott & White’s Wellness Center programs
and services include health fairs, an American
Diabetes Association-recognized Diabetes
Education Center, educational programs on
chronic health conditions, support groups,
nutrition education classes, and more.
The Scott & White Physical Rehabilitation
Center provides physical, speech and
occupational therapy by licensed personnel
in an accredited facility. Services are provided
for patients who are recovering from a wide
variety of illnesses and injuries.
The Scott & White Family Practice clinic provides primary care
services to the community. Patients are cared for by two boardcertified
family practitioners, a board certified physician’s assistant,
and an experienced nursing staff.
Sleep Diagnostics offers diagnostic and therapeutic services for
patients complaining of sleepiness, insomnia and snoring. Specialists
at the facility perform outpatient diagnostic services in a hotel-like
atmosphere to assess patients’ sleep.

Brenham Clinic - Trusted for over 50 years in Brenham. Brenham
Clinic’s mission is to provide high quality, compassionate healthcare,
exceptional service and advanced medicine in the communities they
serve. This mission began in 1956 with the vision of Dr. W.F. Hasskarl, Sr.,
his son Dr. W.F. “Boy” Hasskarl and Dr. Thomas Giddings. Convinced that
physicians in a variety of specialties could join together as a group to
provide high quality, comprehensive patient care, with lab and
radiology services under one roof, the Brenham Clinic was established
with space for four physicians.
Today Brenham Clinic is a vibrant facility with 12 full-time
physicians, 3 nurse practitioners, a physician assistant, and more than
100 dedicated staff members. Brenham Clinic services include a stateand
federally-certified radiology department, laboratory, EKG and
cardiac treadmill testing, echo and vascular studies, pulmonary
function studies, hearing testing, and full body bone density scanning.
Board certified physicians in the areas of OB/GYN, Pediatrics, Internal
Medicine, General Surgery, Radiology and Family Practice provide care
to our community Monday –Friday and Saturday mornings. These
services are covered under most major medical plans.
The vision and humility of these great men is most evident in the
Clinic’s name. They chose not to name it after themselves but rather
to make it “Brenham’s Clinic,” later shortened to Brenham Clinic.
Throughout the decades the name has been associated with quality
healthcare and a tradition of excellence, not only in Brenham but
throughout Washington County and surrounding communities.
One of those is neighboring Austin County where the Brenham
Clinic operates a fulltime medical clinic in Bellville. Brenham Clinic
has also become a busy hub for some of the most talented specialists
in the Brazos Valley who regularly practice at the College Station
Medical Center. These physicians make routine visits to the Brenham
Clinic to see patients in need of specialty care in many different fields
including urology, cardiology, orthopaedics, otolaryngology,
rheumatology and pain management.
In 2003 the Brenham Clinic Physicians built and opened the
Hasskarl-Giddings Imaging Center. Home to both Mammography and
MRI, the area offers a warm and friendly environment, providing
testing using the latest in technology. 2011 brings additional
enhancements to the mammography department with the addition of
Digital mammography and availability of same day reports on
mammograms.
The Women’s Center provides a spa-like atmosphere and ensures
that women’s healthcare is personal and as stress-free as possible.
Home of Brenham’s only board certified OB/GYN physician, the
Women’s Center is dedicated to the healthcare of women of all ages.
Brenham Clinic physicians took another step to enhance quality
patient care in 2009 when they joined College Station Medical Center.
This new partnership allows greater opportunities to strengthen
healthcare for the people of Brenham and the surrounding areas.
While Brenham Clinic continues to support the local hospital, it
recognizes there are times when a higher level of care is needed. The
relationship with the College Station Medical Center allows patients
easy access services much closer to home than Dallas, Houston, Austin
or Temple. Those expanded services include: a 24/7 Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit (NICU) featuring new private suites; a Level III
Trauma Emergency Department with board certified ER physicians;
advanced cardiovascular care and cath labs; and the latest daVinci
surgical robotic system.
Dedicated, trusted, healthcare providers of Brenham Clinic will
continue to provide the highest quality healthcare to our community,
friends, families and neighbors by utilizing the latest technology along
with the greatest compassion and concern. The vision that started
Brenham Clinic more than a half century ago is now the tradition and
standard of care at Brenham Clinic.
St. Joseph “SuperClinic” will open its doors in Brenham in early
2012. With construction complete, Washington County residents will
have the ability to make appointments with a family medicine doctor,
see specialists, have lab tests and diagnostic imaging completed, as
well as see a doctor on a walk-in basis in one location, all at the new
St. Joseph “Superclinic” in Brenham.
The new clinic will incorporate three medical services in one
building: a family medicine practice, a St. Joseph Express walk-in
clinic, and a diagnostic center. The 9,400 square-foot medical building
is located at 110 Highway 290, on the westbound feeder Road in
Brenham near Progress Drive.
The Family Medicine Office features Jacques Mamigonian, M.D.
Known by his patients as “Dr. Jack”, he is a board-certified Family
Medicine physician who has been with St. Joseph for more than two
years. In addition, the clinic will feature visiting specialists each week
to include Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Cardiology, ENT, and
Obstetrics/GYN.
The “Superclinic” is home to St. Joseph Express-Brenham, designed
for people who have an immediate need to see a physician, but can’t
get in to see their regular doctor. Once open in the first quarter of
2012, Express will be open every day, including holidays. Express hours
are typically 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday- Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday
and noon to 6 p.m. on Sundays and holidays.
The medical complex will also house a diagnostic center offering
laboratory services and imaging center with X-ray and CT imaging
services available. On-site lab and imaging will provide quicker test
results for physicians and prompt care for patients.
“St. Joseph has a long history with Brenham and Washington
County,” said Tony Pfitzer, President & CEO of St. Joseph. “From the first
day we began working on this project we have had great support from
residents who have been cared for at St. Joseph and are eager to see
us in the community. Our goal is to provide convenient access to
health care with the kind of service Brenham residents have come to
expect from St. Joseph.”
St. Joseph was established in 1936 and has clinical locations across
the Brazos Valley, including four hospitals, two nursing homes, two
walk-in clinics, and more than a dozen family medicine clinics.
EMS
The Washington County Emergency Medical Service (EMS)
provides mobile intensive care unit (MICU) level emergency care to
the cit-izens of Washington County and the Carmine area.
They continue to be a leader among emergency care providers,
handling 9-1-1 calls and local, long-distance emergency and nonemergency
transfers between healthcare facilities. It is the only
all-MICU level EMS service in the Brazos Valley area.
A staff of 25 paramedics, emergency medical technicianintermediates
(EMT-Is), and emergency medical technicians (EMTs)
work to provide care via the service’s four MICU ambulances.

On an annual basis, Washington County EMS responds to
approximately 5,000 calls and handles 3,000 patients. Approximately
80 percent of the service’s calls are emergencies.
Washington County EMS has an advanced life support special
operations division within the department that speccializes in taking
advanced medicine to unfortunate and unusual situations. It serves as
the primary advanced life support water rescue department for the
county. Providing water rescue boat based search and rescue
operations in Washington and surrounding counties. Employing 12
water rescue technician paramedics that are also apart of the world
renouned Texas Task Force 1 US&R Team.
The department has recieved many awards throughout its history
including being named the 2007 EMS Provider of the Year Award by
the State of Texas, 2007 EMS Administrator of the Year Award, and the
2010 Public Education Award by the State of Texas.
FIRE
The Brenham Fire Department was created by City ordinance on
June 10, 1867. The company was founded, on the surface, to protect
against fire, but in actuality, it was created as a military organization to
protect the lives and property of citizens from Union soldiers stationed
here during the Reconstruction era.
In May, 1879, the BFD became the proud owner of a new Silsby
Steam Engine, which could pump 600 gallons per minute. It was
designed to be drawn by hand or by horses. The historically preserved
engine now sits in a special exhibit next door to the Brenham Heritage
Museum.
The current BFD has 14 paid Firemen including a Fire Chief, Deputy
Chief/Fire Marshal, 3 Captains and 9 Apparatus Operators, plus an
administrative assistant and 50 volunteers. The BFD responds to over
500 emergency calls a year. They provide rescue services, firstresponder
fire suppression, technical rescue and hazardous materials
mitigation within Washington County. The BFD performs smoke
detector service checks, home fire safety assessments, pre-incident
planning surveys, and flood water removal services within the City.
The Fire Marshal’s Office works with contractors to assist in code
compliance for fire alarms and suppression systems being installed
in new and remodeled commercial and industrial buildings.
During Fire Prevention Month in October, the BFD educates
children from Pre-K through 4th grade about fire safety presented by
the Fire Marshal, BFD staff members and Mascot, Sparky.
Also offered are Department and Museum tours, County Fair
Presentations, National Night Out visits, employee training for
businesses & industries with hands-on operating of a Fire Extinguisher.
The members of the BFD own and operate the Fireman’s Training
Center. This popular facility provides an important service to the
community and is utilized year-round for social and business events.
Dept. members host two annual fundraisers: Spring Fish Fry and
Fireman’s Fiesta held in August. The BFD Ladies Auxiliary is a huge
support to the Department with generous donations from profits of
their own fundraisers.
With a rich heritage and many accomplishments to their credit, the
members of the Brenham Fire Department look forward to an even
greater future with the same objectives as in 1867, “To Serve the
Community.”
