The Meeting was called to order by Philippe Saltiel, the President of the Family Association, at
10:12 AM, Sunday 29 July 2012 in New York City, NY at the New Yorker Hotel, Crystal
Ballroom. The meeting was conducted in English.
The President stated that those family members present would be deemed to be members of the
Family Association for voting purposes, with 1 vote per family unit. He then offered the
minutes of the 2009 Crete reunion to the group for review. With no additions or corrections to
the minutes, the President gave the floor to the Treasurer, Flor Saltiel for review of the Family
Association’s financial report.
Prompted by statements from the President, and the Secretary, that they would not be serving
another term there was some discussion about transitioning the Family Association’s bank
account from the retiring President to the incoming President. The problems and costs in
opening a Family Association bank account in the United States were discussed, with the major
concerns being current U. S. banking regulations requiring significantly more documentation to
open and maintain an account and the much higher fees associated with maintaining an account.
The President stated that he had asked our current bank, in France, to see how we might
continue to maintain the account, as it is, under a new President. Victor Saltiel noted that he
knows a Chase (bank) executive who might be helpful should we decide to move the account to
a U. S. bank. Victor will check with his contact on the documentation required and the costs of
maintaining and account.
The Treasurer concluded her report and passed control of the floor to the Secretary, Miles
Saltiel.
The Secretary’s review and report was as follows:
Actions agreed at 2009 meeting
The Secretary to be asked to liaise with Vibeke Sëaltiel Olsen and Fran
London (US) about developing co-operation with and access to the Saltiel
and Grassiani groups on Facebook;
Family members to be approached for dues by email rather than
newsletter;
Dues to be maintained at €60.00 per household per triennium;
The site to be seen as an amenity and advertisement for the family; that it
be opened up to general access, except for confidential data, that is contact
particulars of living persons or the Association’s finances;
The next Reunion to include in its budget a household subscription to the
Association for the Triennium 2012-2015 for those attending who had not
already paid their subscription; and
Dues to entitle subscribers to recognition on the website as “active
members” according to paragraph 6 of the Association’s Articles, a vote at
the Association’s General Meeting according to paragraph 9-6 of the
Association’s Articles and complete access to the website.
Outcome
Several exercises, not altogether
satisfactory.
Truncated by death of Vibeke
Feedback sought from meeting.
Partly done, but not much response
Not done, for budget reasons.
Partly done.
The Secretary further reported that there were:
Currently 40 family subscribers (plus guests and year-end concessions);
Seven newsletters had been distributed since the 2009 Reunion on Crete and;
The family’s Facebook page has been growing (162 members, as of 8/27/12, from the
consolidation of 2 Family separate pages) but has had little follow through over the past several
months, again as a result of Vibeke’s passing, as she was the primary force in soliciting family
members to subscribe. The Secretary concluded his report and passed control of the floor back
to the President.
A discussion followed about the list of known family members. The President stated that there
are between 700 – 800 names (families), of which, a small percentage are active and involved in
family events and activities. An Excel spreadsheet of family members exists and is maintained
by the President and the Secretary and it will be passed to the incoming Secretary with the
instructions that it must remain a private document. The incoming Secretary will test and target
the list and update information as necessary. As has been the past policy, emails that are
rejected will result in the name being deleted from the email distribution list, if the email address
cannot be updated.
With there being a disappointing number (40) of current subscribers, a discussion of how to
increase subscriptions lead to a statement that the current subscription level (€60.00 Euro,
$75.00 US), has a larger economic impact on families in some countries (parts of the world)
than it does in others. The question was raised about the possibility of creating multiple
categories of subscriptions with the intention of lowering the rates to be more in line with
regional economic standards. The Secretary reported that the Family Association has never
turned away anyone for financial reasons. The President ended the discussion and called for a
vote to accept the Treasurer’s and Secretary’s reports. A vote was taken and the reports were
accepted.
There being no additional discussion, the President initiated his closing remarks.
The President stated that the spirit of the Family Association is reflected in the Articles of
Association and that he hoped, that as he steps aside, the organization continues to be open to all
Shealtiels, that all opinions are continued to be welcome, and that the organization should not
assume any political or religious purpose. The president then turned the floor over to the
Secretary for his closing remarks.
The Secretary listed his goals and hopes for the incoming President and Secretary, and the
organization as a whole. He would like to see:
• An account of the New York City Reunion, replete with photographs on the family
website and circulated via the normal email distribution channels.
• Updating of the primary family list (in Excel spreadsheet format.)
• Updating (and increasing) of the number of subscribers.
• An outreach to the Greek and Israeli family members to strengthen their connection to
the family network.
• The completion of the translation of the Salonika archives.
• The active engagement of the younger generation, as they are the future of the family
organization.
• Remembering Vibeke. We all have strong feelings of loss and we will reach out and
make family contacts available to Yusef , who is in good hands with his father and
stepmother.
The President re-assumed the Chair and prefaced the election of a new Association Board and
Officers with a comment. The Board selection was not done in a vacuum. There were
conversations in advance, with each potential member to gauge their interest and commitment to
the Family Association as well as to maintain some geographical diversity.
The President then offered the following proposed Board to the Family members present for
their approval:
President
Rebecca Saltiel Busch (United States)
Secretary
Jay London (United States)
Treasurer
Victor Saltiel (United States)
Stanley Arundell (Great Britain)
In addition, after a brief discussion, it was suggested that Hermann Bredl (Germany) and Ed
Motola (United States) be added as non-voting Board members Emeritus.
The President called for a vote to be taken and the proposed new Board was approved.
Rebecca Saltiel Busch assumed the Chair as President of the Family Association for the next 3
years.
Post meeting event: Flor Saltiel has agreed to accept responsibilities as Treasurer Emeritus for
the next Reunion.
A discussion about the 2015 Family Reunion ensued. Ariel Saltiel, Gustavo Saltiel, Stanley and
Patricia Arundell and Ed Motola volunteered to form the organizing committee for the next
reunion. (Flor Saltiel has since volunteered to join the committee as Chief Financial Officer.) It
was determined that with many family members and family history – as well as the fact that
costs would be significantly lower than New York City, that Mexico (perhaps Mexico City)
would be a good location for the next reunion. There were some concerns about personal safety
in Mexico. Stanley Arundell (who lives part time in Mexico) stated that, in general, Mexico
City is a s safe as any other major city, as long as common sense is exercised. There was
agreement from other family members who have spent time in Mexico. One of the tasks of the
organizing committee is to convey to family members who consider attending the 2015
Reunion, is that they will be safe.
Other issues that were discussed for the 2015 Reunion were: Given that many languages are
spoken by family members around the world, that more attention should be paid to translations.
Family members expressed the desire for more family/child friendly activities and said that they
liked the free time that was planned into the New City Reunion schedule, and that they would
want that to continue. Comments were made to consider alternative timing for the 2015
Reunion, perhaps during “Spring Break” as long as we can avoid a conflict with the Passover
and Easter holidays.
The President apologized that she had to leave to make a plane, and turned the Chair over to the
Secretary, Jay London. The discussion about the 2015 Reunion continued and it was agreed that
the Organizing Committee would come back to the Family Association Board with a proposal
for the 2015 Reunion.
With all business concluded, the meeting was adjourned at 11:47 AM.
