William David <strong>Bevirt</strong> passed away on January 17, 2012 at Casa<br />

de la Luz Hospice, Tucson, Arizona. He was born July 29, 1928<br />

in St. Louis, Missouri to William and Jennie (Roehm) <strong>Bevirt</strong>. He<br />

is survived by his loving wife Joan (Kern), whom he married March 22,<br />

1973 in St. Louis, Missouri.<br />

<strong>Dave</strong> attended Washington University (MO), served in the U.S. Army<br />

(Korean Conflict) and was President of D.F. Edwards Heating & Air<br />

Conditioning Co., St.Louis, Missouri. He moved to Alexandria, Virginia<br />

and was employed by SMACNA, a trade association, and in 1972 became<br />

involved with <strong>NEBB</strong>.<br />

He served as co-administrator of <strong>NEBB</strong> starting in 1976 and handled<br />

all financial and technical activities. He was part of the <strong>NEBB</strong> Board<br />

of Directors from 1976-1993. He was then the Technical Director and<br />

later the Director of Research for <strong>NEBB</strong>.<br />

In addition to representing <strong>NEBB</strong> on related ASHRAE Committees,<br />

<strong>Dave</strong> <strong>Bevirt</strong> was elected as the President of the American Council for<br />

Construction Education (ACCE) in 1981 and reelected in 1982. Through<br />

<strong>Dave</strong>’s involvement with ASHRAE, he was instrumental in including<br />

<strong>NEBB</strong> in standards as they were being revised.<br />

In 1983, <strong>Dave</strong> <strong>Bevirt</strong> wrote the 768 page Environmental Systems<br />

Technology. At the same time he was completing the Procedural<br />

Standards for Testing Adjusting, Balancing Environmental Systems with<br />

new information that included full size Test Report Forms, duct design<br />

tables and charts, hydronic piping tables, steam and refrigeration<br />

piping tables, and expanded procedures and instrumentation data. In<br />

1986, <strong>Dave</strong> was involved in the completion of the Testing, Adjusting,<br />

and Balancing Manual for Technicians. This manual continues to be<br />

a highly regarded educational text for training testing, adjusting and<br />

balancing technicians as well as a comprehensive reference source that<br />

is still used at many TAB jobsites.<br />

In 1987, <strong>Dave</strong> <strong>Bevirt</strong> went to Australia and New Zealand to meet potential<br />

<strong>NEBB</strong> firms and to conduct technical seminars.<br />

During his tenure with SMACNA, <strong>Dave</strong> served as the Assistant Executive<br />

Vice President and then concurrently as SMACNA Director of Research<br />

and <strong>NEBB</strong> Co-Administrator. Prior to that, he spent 25 years as a<br />

mechanical contractor and consulting engineer since 1952, and joined<br />

SMACNA in 1948. He was a member of the SMACNA National Board of<br />

Directors from 1965 to 1972, and National Treasurer from 1970 until<br />

he joined the SMACNA national staff in 1972.<br />

In 1990, <strong>Dave</strong> and Joan moved to Tucson, Arizona and established<br />

an office in his home. Joan <strong>Bevirt</strong> agreed to provide part-time<br />

secretarial service and ended up typing all the new and revised<br />

<strong>NEBB</strong> Technical publications until 1999.<br />

He traveled the world giving technical lectures and also wrote some<br />

40 technical books on Environmental Systems Technology, Heating<br />

and Air-conditioning, Sound and Vibration, Clean Rooms, Duct<br />

Design, and others.<br />

His awards and honors include the award of Fellow from ASHRAE,<br />

election to the SMACNA College of Fellows, and the <strong>NEBB</strong> Hightower<br />

Distinguished Service Award.<br />

In Arizona, <strong>Dave</strong> and Joan became charter members of the Oro<br />

Valley United Church of Christ. <strong>Dave</strong> was also a member of the Oro<br />

Valley American Legion Post #132 and many school and business<br />

organizations, as well as past president of the Sun City Kiwanis.<br />

Anyone in the area is invited to attend the Celebration of the Life<br />

of David <strong>Bevirt</strong> at a memorial service on July 7th, 2012 at 11 a.m.,<br />

at the Oro Valley United Church of Christ, 1401 East Conquistador<br />

Way, Oro Valley, AZ. A reception will follow the service in the<br />

Fellowship Hall. <strong>Dave</strong>’s children and grandchildren will be attending<br />

in addition to other family members.<br />
