UMPIRING NEWS
Well we are now coming to the end of a season full of commitment, consistency and excitement.
Umpiring is always a hard task, but with the dedication of our Club Umpires’ Convenors and the
Umpires’ Committee, we have seen an enthusiastic group of umpires move forward in their
umpiring endeavours. So far this season we have awarded 20 Junior Level 1 umpires and 15 Senior
Level 1 umpires along with numerous other levels in the junior and senior divisions. We
congratulate the following umpires who have worked tirelessly all season and have benefitted from
the hard work:
National AA Badge
Courtney Harrington
National B Badge
Hannah Dempsey
National C Badge
Edwina Moran
Anthony Azzurra
Laura-Leigh Smith
Alice Ryan
Lucy Dirou
Sarah Nicol
Georgia DeMestre
Louisa Andrews
I would like to thank all of the umpires who have attended carnivals this season, and in
particular those who have represented NSNA at State Championships and State Age Championships
as it has been greatly appreciated. Finally I would like to thank my hardworking committee -
Katrina Walker (Junior Umpires’ Convenor), Bianca Levy (Senior Umpires’ Convenor), Margot
Paterson, Hannah Dempsey, Charlotte Siddle and Kate Dickinson for all their time and effort
throughout the season.
STATE LEAGUE 2013
STATE LEAGUE 2
State League 2 has enjoyed a successful
season with the results on the
scoreboard not a true reflection of the
way the team performed each week. The
players have formed a united team and
held their own, creating fierce
competition against spirited opposition.
Their performances clearly indicate that
this team will form the basis of the State
League 2 team in the future.
STATE LEAGUE 3
State League 3 have made it into the 4 -
currently sitting 4th on the ladder. The
team is made up of a majority of NSNA
juniors and junior coaches - Abby
Clydsdale, Ash Grave, Ash Veale, Kate
Dalwood, Kate Knox, Mikaela Marsha,
Sophie Holdstock, Taela Marriott and Toni
Walter.
The goal this season is to make it to the
finals and the objective has become a
real possibility with one round to play.
The coach Kristie Franks is ecstatic at the
hard work the team has put in over the
season and loves the way they can laugh
at themselves and the enjoyment they get
from playing together. Noticeably the
team is feeling more confident with each
win and have hit some form at the right
time.
STATE LEAGUE 2013
STATE LEAGUE 6
State League 6 are our youngest SL team
- with many team members being school
girls or in their first year of SL netball.
The team have improved much over the
course of the season - now playing more
consistent netball - a reflection of their
hardwork at training and developing
bonds on the court.
The team members of SL6 have much to
look forward to in coming seasons as
they continue to develop their high level
court play in senior netball.
STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS 2013
STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS 2013
State Championships were held at Baulkham Hills from Saturday 8 June - Monday 10 June
2013.
NSNA entered teams into the Open Championship Division, 19U Championship Division and
17U Championship Division.
These teams are formed for a fun, but competitive, weekend of high level netball. It was an
enjoyable weekend for all players, coaches and supporters.
Thank you to all the umpires, coaches, managers - most of whom volunteered their time to
support NSNA over the 3 days of the Championships.
Results were:
Opens - Championship Division - 8th
19U - Championship Division - 11th
17U - Championship Division - 18th
STATE AGE 2013
STATE AGE 2013 SEES NSNA GROWING IN STRENGTH
State Age Championships were held on 29 June-1July in Campbelltown. It was a wet and
muddy 3 days of fantastic netball that showed NSNA are growing in skill and strength in
our junior ranks. It was a pleasure to see our wonderful young players in action as they
took on some tough competition.
The 15s came 6th. This was an amazing result for a team that had moved from winners of
Division 2 in 2012 to be just outside the top 5 in the Championship Division. They played
outstanding netball that showed they are skilled and talented players. They fought hard
every match, and are a credit to their coaching team of Charlotte Siddle, Mikaela Marsh
and the Manager, Kerry Finucane. We wish these girls all the best as they move into the
senior ranks. Their talent and dedication are exactly what NSNA are looking for.
The 14s sat in the top 5 all weekend, and finally after a tough final day finished 4th. A
sensational top 5 finish for a team that gave everything they had to each other and their
coaching team over the 3 days. It was lovely to watch this team play positive and fluid
netball using speed, skill and determination to achieve fantastic results. Congratulations
to the hardworking coaches Renee Bates and Kate Dickinson, and to Manager Lorri Bauer.
The 13s had a hard fought championship, finishing 13th. After a flying start on day 1 with
only 1 loss in atrocious conditions, they continued through days 2 and 3 with some close
games that could have gone either way. They fought hard in every match, never giving in
or dwelling on the game before. This team has greatly improved this year and are a real
credit to their coaches and families. Congratulations to the players, coaches Michelle
White and Ashleigh Grave and the Manager Samantha Robinson.
The 12s had a wonderful, skillful debut in State Age netball, coming in 4th with some
unbelievably close games. The players worked so hard to put their best effort on the court
which resulted in great netball being played. State Age is a tough 3 days - more so in the
first year - and this team approached the competition with maturity and determination
beyond their years. Congratulations to all the players, the coaches Lilly Moore and Tamara
Perry and the Manager Glenys Paranihi.
Thank you to everyone who came to support the players - not only were there friends and
family but our own senior players and coaches, along with 11-15 talent players and
coaches. It is magnificent for the players to receive such fabulous support over the 3 days.
INJURY PREVENTION
Ankle Injuries – Brace, strap or strengthen?
Ankle sprains are one of the most common injuries sustained during netball.
The most common ankle injury is what is o;en referred to as a ‘rolled’ ankle, where you roll your ankle
outwards. During this movement you stretch or tear to some degree, the ligaments that support the
outside of your ankle. This o;en results in pain, swelling and bruising depending on the degree of
ligament damage.
Acute management for this type, indeed any, so; Assue injury is Rest. Ice. Compression. ElevaAon
(RICE). If you are unable to put any weight through that ankle and it is extremely painful to touch any
of the ankle bones – it is best to get an X-‐Ray to check for a fracture.
People o;en ask whether braces are best for prevenAon of ankle sprains. There is evidence to show
that bracing significantly reduces the incidence of ankle sprains, however it also weakens the ankle
stabilisers, making re injury more likely when not wearing the brace. Braces are appropriate for people
who have very loose or lax ligaments-‐ either from previous injury or geneAcs.
Taping is beneficial for return to netball a;er an injury, it provides stability as well as propriocepAve
feedback to your brain to know where your ankle is in space. Again, taping preferably is a short term
soluAon to speed up return to netball.
Strengthening and balance exercises are ideally the mainstay of ankle sprain management and
prevenAon. Your Physio can guide you through a thorough rehabilitaAon program a;er ankle sprain, to
improve your body’s ability to avoid future sprains. If you do not rehab your ankle properly, you are
much more likely to re injure your ankle.
If you need some advice or treatment for ankle related injuries, see Erin the Physio at the first aid room
at the courts, or make an appointment at The Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic: North Sydney.
