1. Welcome!
Welcome from the Symposium Co-Chairs!
!
On behalf of the organizing committee, we are pleased to welcome you to the 2014 Gender and
Sexual Diversity Symposium at the University of Calgary. The symposium would not have been
possible without the efforts of numerous individuals and organizations, including the Institute for
Gender Research, the Women’s Studies Program, the Women’s Resource Centre, and the
Women’s Studies and Feminist Club. Of course, the key to the symposium’s success is the
involvement of the participants, both presenters and attendees. !
!
We are thrilled with the response to the symposium, reviving a greatly needed forum for
advancing knowledge in gender and sexual diversity not seen since 2006. The symposium will
involve over 100 participants, with more than 15 campus and community organizations
participating in Friday’s Diversity Discourse Night, and numerous presenters organized into 15
sessions on Saturday.!
!
The impetus for the symposium came from graduate and senior undergraduate students who
felt that their classroom experiences were not pushing their research in gender and sexual
diversity as far as it could go, and it became clear that we needed a space to explore the
complexity of gender and sexual diversity research in a challenging and supportive
environment. The Institute for Gender Research provided this opportunity to improve the student
experience by listening to the concerns of students and supporting their desire to create space
for academic, collaborative, and community-engaged learning and research.!
!
The organizing committee began from the position that leadership and mentorship should be
built into our process. Beyond providing a scholarly forum where complex and multifaceted
discussions could occur, the symposium also provided opportunities for mentorship prior to the
symposium to prepare undergraduate researchers for their first steps towards becoming serious
scholars. Students were also central to organizing the symposium and were mentored by faculty
and community advisors. In this way, our aim was to create a space for pushing the boundaries
of gender and sexual diversity knowledge and practice among emerging researchers, activists,
artists, and community members. !
!
Thank you for being willing to share your knowledge, experiences, and ideas about gender and
sexual diversity at this symposium. We look forward to two days full of rich, vibrant discussion,
with input from a wide variety of perspectives and voices.!
Welcome from the Institute for Gender Research and the Women’s Studies Program!
As both the Director of the Institute for Gender Research and the Coordinator of the Women’s
Studies Program (Faculty of Arts), I am absolutely delighted that we can present the Gender
and Sexual Diversity Symposium. !
Our purpose is to bring together emerging researchers, activists, artists, and community
members to advance knowledge of gender and sexual diversity. We claim gender and sexual
diversity as central to building a rigorous scholarly environment committed to cultural
understanding and positively influencing human dynamics in a changing world. !
The unique organization of the symposium was designed specifically to allow us to share
research, best practices, and cutting-edge methods of scholarly and community engagement.
We see the university as a creative communications hub, a place where we can synthesize
where gender and sexual issues intersect with other issues of diversity and equity, and identify
strategic areas of research strength and possibilities for enhanced collaboration.!
Both the Institute for Gender Research and the Women’s Studies Program hold as a key value
the role of inquiry-based research in the university. Nonetheless, we argue that research
interests and community priorities can and should work closely together to generate cultural
understanding, initiate creative responses to longstanding social and economic concerns, and
produce smarter, safer, and more sustainable societies. !
The Gender and Sexual Diversity Symposium marks a new era in gender and sexual diversity
scholarship at the University of Calgary. Our hope is that the symposium will help to catalyze
our abundant research strengths, pedagogical commitments, activist passions, creative
endeavours, and community engagements, in order to set a course for future-forward
scholarship. We couldn’t do this without the enthusiastic support from all our presenters and
audience participants. For that we are extremely grateful. !
I hope that you gain new insights and refreshed perspectives on what the university can do to
expand the public conversation about gender and sexual diversity. Let the conversation begin!!
4. Information and Services!
Safer Space Guidelines!
In the interest of making this a safer space for sharing ideas about gender and sexual diversity,
please consider the following in your interactions with other participants:!
!
- Address people without assuming their gender. Some ways to do this: !
- Don’t refer to groups as guys, ladies, women, men, etc., !
- Refer to individuals whose gender has not been disclosed to you in gender-neutral
ways such as “the person who said…”!
- Address people using the gender pronouns they have indicated for themselves. Offer your
gender pronouns to others to make it a safer space to talk about gender pronouns. Ways to
talk about your pronouns include, but are not limited to:!
- they/them/theirs!
- she/her/hers!
- ze/hir/hirs!
- he/him/his!
- ey/em/eirs!
- Similarly, don’t assume that others have the same experiences, identities, or histories as you.
Question your assumptions and be open to having others question them too. Practice
respectful listening and respectful communication. Some additional identities/assumptions to
consider are racial identity, ethnic identity, immigrant status, citizenship status, sex assigned
at birth, mental health situation, accessibility needs (or lack thereof), and formal education
status.!
- Provide discrete and succinct content/trigger warnings if you will be talking about topics that
may be traumatic for some and the content is not already apparent, examples of such topics
could include abuse, violence, addiction, suicide, mental health, transphobia/homophobia/
other forms of discriminatory behaviours.!
- Respect your own and others’ physical, mental, and emotional boundaries. Please speak up
in a respectful way if you are uncomfortable, seek support if you want/need it, and engage in
self-care as required and/or desired.!
!
Additional Considerations:!
- If you are going in and out of sessions as they are running, please try to do so at times when
you are least likely to disrupt presentations. Keep in mind that entering a workshop late or
leaving early can be disruptive.!
5. Diversity Discourse Night!
Friday, March 28th, 6:00 to 9:00 PM - The Loft, 4th Floor, MacEwan Student
Centre!
Brief presentations from community groups followed by a breakout session to brainstorm on the
following: !
1) What kinds of connections do community groups have with the university? !
2) What do you think about when you think of the university? (e.g., space, resources, research,
community-service learning) !
3) What kinds of services could the university provide, or provide better, to communities and
students to support gender and sexual diversity?!
4) What gaps in knowledge exist in gender and sexual diversity work in the community, as well
as in student knowledge upon graduation and seeking employment? !
The information gathered will be used in a report on gender and sexual diversity at the
University of Calgary in connection with the community. It will be circulated internally within
senior university administration. Participating organizations will be recognized in attendance but
all specific comments will remain anonymous and general. The document will also be circulated
to all Diversity Discourse Night participants, and your feedback would be most welcome.!
