Hospice Sixth Annual Golf Classic 

to Premier at the Powelton Club 

Hospice is so excited to hold its annual golf classic 

at The Powelton Club in Newburgh for the first time ever! 

Golfers are encouraged to register early. 

115 golfers took to the fairways last year to benefit 

Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties. 

Under the leadership of Committee Chair Glen L. Heller, 

Esq., the Hospice Sixth Annual Golf Classic will be held 

on Monday, August 13, 2012. Major sponsors for the 

event include Dana Distributors, First Federal Savings 

of Middletown, Health Care Answering Services, Smith, 

Seaman & Quackenbush Inc. Funeral Homes, Unidine 

Corporation, Walden Savings Bank, and William F. Hogan 

Funeral Home. 

The cost is $200 per golfer or $750 for a foursome, 

and golfers may choose Scramble or Best Ball format. 

Registration begins at 10:30 a.m., followed by a barbecue 

lunch at 11:00 a.m. and a Shotgun Start at 12:30 p.m. 

Following golf, a cocktail hour will begin at 5:30 p.m. with 

an open bar and hors d’oeuvres, dinner at 6:30 p.m., an 

awards presentation at 7:00 p.m., and our famous golf 

raffle. With ten cash prizes to be drawn during dinner, 

including a $10,000 winner, you surely don’t want to miss 

the excitement! A maximum of 600 tickets will be sold and 

you need not be present to win.

The Joint Commission accreditation and 

certification is recognized nationwide as 

a symbol of quality that reflects an 

organization’s commitment to meeting 

certain performance standards. Their 

mission is to continuously improve health 

care for the public by evaluating health 

care organizations and inspiring them to 

excel in providing safe and effective care 

of the highest quality and value. 

The Joint Commission performed a three-day survey here in March 

and I am pleased and proud to say that once again we received our 

accreditation (as we have consistently done since 1997). Our staff 

worked very hard to prepare for this survey visit and it is through their 

hard work and dedication to the quality of care provided by Hospice of 

Orange and Sullivan Counties that we were successful in acquiring our 

accreditation. I am proud of them and proud of this accomplishment. 

Having the Joint Commission accredit our organization only confirms 

what I already know: the level of end of life and palliative care that we 

offer to our patients and families is most important, and I am blessed 

to have staff and volunteers that live up to this standard each and 

every day. I give my heartfelt thanks to you all!

Running/Walking 

for Hospice 

The 6th Annual Forestburgh 5k Run/Walk will take place on 

Forestburgh Day, Saturday, August 11, 2012. Kick-off is at 8:30 a.m. 

at Lake Joseph in the Town of Forestburgh (located on Route 42 and 

Lake Joseph Road). ALL proceeds will benefit Hospice of Orange 

and Sullivan Counties. The cost to participate in the race is $18 for pre-registration and $20 for same day 

registration; children 10 and under are free. A t-shirt, barbecue tickets and gift bags will be presented to the

an Exceptional Event! 

On March 31, 2012 all welcomed spring at the 

Hospice annual gala, “On the Wings of Spring,” 

raising $115,000 for Hospice of Orange and 

Sullivan Counties. More than 350 guests were 

in attendance—dining, dancing, and extending 

congratulations to longtime hospice supporter and 

honoree, A. Vincent Mazzie. 

Chairing the Gala Committee were Marilyn 

D’Ambrosio and Janet Sullivan, who did a marvelous 

job, along with Gloria Alisandrella (Director of 

Special Events) and the entire Gala Committee 

(Mary Bonura, Sherri Heller, Kathy Jones, Nancy 

Kane, Joann Menendez, Peggy Milich, Susan Najork, 

Barbara Naru and Cathy Wood). 

Already a beautiful venue, Anthony’s Pier 9 was 

further enhanced with the beauty and scent of 

floral arrangements provided by Flowers by David 

Anthony. The staff at Pier 9 outdid themselves with 

the “shrimp on the line” and the guests shook the 

dance floor to the music of The Motones. 

The cocktail reception sponsor for the evening was 

Smith, Seaman & Quackenbush, Inc. Funeral Home 

and the entertainment sponsor was Dr. Robert 

Dinsmore. Our deepest appreciation also goes to

This summer Hospice is launching a newly-designed Web site. Our goal is to provide a site that 

is easy to navigate, provides relevant information, and connects the public to necessary hospice 

resources. Information ranging from how to request hospice services, to bereavement counseling and 

volunteer training schedules, to event specifics will be available. The actual launch will be announced 

in the monthly eFocus newsletter over the summer.

Friends of “Shiney” Van Horn Continue to Ride for Hospice

“Shiney” on his bike 

My brother Tom “Shiney” Van 

Horn was diagnosed with stage 

four colon cancer at the age of 

32 years old. After a 14-month 

battle, he left a wife and a six year 

old son Thomas. Tommy was the 

type of person to help out a friend 

in need, so when he was the one 

in need, all of his friends rallied to 

help where they could. 

Tommy was a Harley man and 

loved to ride his motorcycle with 

his friends. As a tribute to Tommy, 

all his friends came with their 

bikes to his funeral. It still brings 

tears to my eyes when I remember 

hearing the rumble of the bikes 

coming one after another. 

On the first anniversary of 

Tommy’s passing, a memorial 

bike ride was held to celebrate 

his life and raise money to send 

to Hospice in his memory. We 

have had one every year since. At 

the 10-year anniversary ride my 

sister-in-law, Cathy Van Horn, was 

there and battling breast cancer. 

Knowing that she would not be 

there the next year, we took it as a 

sign that since there will be more 

people battling, we must continue 

with the memorial and send the 

donations to Hospice. 

This amazing labor of love would 

not come together without the 

help of special people: my sister, 

Jamie Swingle, Kenny Kent, 

Debbie Rowe, Amy Outwater 

(owner of Dad’s Change of Pace), 

Casey Goddard and many more 

friends who are a part of this event 

every year. 12 years later we are 

still riding for “Shiney.” Next year’s 

date will be March 16, 2013.

A stepping stone and tree were 

placed outside the Hospice 

Administrative offices by the 

Children’s Bereavement Group in 

honor of loved ones who are gone 

but never forgotten. 

Children ranging from 4-11 years 

old each picked out a stone to be 

placed in the stepping stone to 

represent their loved one. Some of 

the chosen stones were the favorite 

color of a deceased mom, grandpa, 

dad, little sister, grandma, or little 

brother. Some were the favorite 

color of the bereaved themselves. 

They held the stones in their little 

hands for some time. Many of them 

kissed their stone before making 

their contribution to the stepping 

stone. Their gift is truly heartfelt 

and beautiful.

Electronics Recycled… 

Funds Raised 

More than 34,000 pounds of computers, 

televisions, printers, VCRs and other discarded 

electronics were collected by Advanced Recovery, 

Inc. when the Orange County Chamber of 

Commerce hosted “Electronics Recycling Days” 

at the Chamber Business Center in Montgomery. 

Representatives of businesses and households 

brought their recyclables to the Chamber building 

in Montgomery, and in lieu of recycling fees, 

donations were made to Hospice totaling more 

than $1,300. Thanks to the many members of the 

community and the Orange County Chamber for 

their support of our programs! 

AUXILIARY NEWS 

The Hospice Auxiliary held their Annual Meeting and 

Dinner on May 29 at the Powelton Club where the new 

slate of officers was announced. Over sixty member 

and guests enjoyed a lovely dinner and program with 

guest speaker Hospice nurse, Padma Dyvine, MA, RN, 

CHPN, who spoke about the Vigil Volunteer Program.

a babysitting fundraiser at Sacred Heart School 

that raised $160, as well as to give the Meditation 

Garden at the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence 

a facelift. Thank you to all those who participated,
