2009 Annual Report to Donors
Our Thanks to You.

It is not how many years we
live, but what we do with
them. It is not what we receive,
but what we give to others.
Evangeline Cory Booth
(1865—1950)
Fourth General of The Salvation Army
Cover: Ayla was born with neuroblastoma, the most common solid tumor
in children. She was treated at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for
Children and is now a healthy toddler who is free of cancer.

August, 2010
Dear Friends:
Almost every day, I have the joy of learning about a gift that has been
received to help children in the care of Nemours. My heart warms when
I think of the impulse that moved a donor to make that commitment.
The Nemours Fund for Children’s Health accepts thousands of
gifts each year—through the mail, over the internet, in a bequest or
sometimes from the donor’s own hand when they come to visit us.
Whether the contribution is small or significant, I know that it was
given not only because that individual or organization cares, but also
because they have confidence in the ability of Nemours to help restore
and improve the health of children.
Support from donors helps Nemours improve patient care, provide facilities that are attractive and comfortable for
children and families, advance life-saving biomedical research, and strengthen innovative prevention and education
programs. And because of Mr. duPont’s Trust, 100 percent of each dollar contributed goes to help children.
Donors have many choices for giving to help children. Some contributors choose to support research to find better
treatments for children with leukemia. Others direct their gift to a specific clinical area such as orthopedics or
cardiac care, or to help improve facilities. Many donors just ask us to use their gift to meet the most urgent needs
of children.
However you choose to give, whatever the amount you contribute, your gift is incredibly important to children and
their families. They may never know your name—just that someone cared.
Sincerely,
Lori J. Counts, CFRE
Continuing A Legacy of Caring—David Lyons
David F. Lyons, Sr. became aware of the needs of others
very early in life. His father, Garrett B. Lyons Sr., DDS,
was the Director of the Children’s Dental Clinic at
Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children. “I often
went with Dad on Saturdays when he had an emergency
patient. He had a special touch in caring for children with
special needs,” he says.
After Dr. Lyons passed away in 2007, David began a
successful fundraising effort to endow a Fellowship in
Dentistry for Children with Special Needs at the Hospital
in his memory. “There are so many children who cannot
get the care they need in the community. I wanted to
make sure a new generation of dentists could carry on
Dad’s work,” he says.
David is the founder of Lyons Companies, Delaware’s
largest privately held insurance brokerage and risk
management firm. He serves on the boards of the
Delaware Business Roundtable, Artisan’s Bank, and
The Tatnall School.
David is also Chairman of the Board of the Delaware
Council for Economic Education and Entrepreneurship at
the Lerner School of Business at University of Delaware.
“Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children is one
of the best in the country,” comments David. “It is having
an amazing, even world-wide, impact on children’s
health. When I played football in high school, I tore a
ligament in my knee, had surgery at the Hospital and
spent six months in a cast. Now, due to improvements in
orthopedic care, kids with this type of injury can often
walk out of the hospital after outpatient surgery.”
David and his wife Kate are long-time members of The
Nemours Society and generous donors. In 2009, he
received The Inspiration Award, given to an individual in
the community who personifies philanthropy.
“I want to help people understand that it takes community
investment to truly help Nemours succeed in transforming
care for children,” he says.

Thanks to You
The Nemours Fund for Children’s Health gratefully acknowledges the support
of our friends listed below. Their generosity allows Nemours to do even
more for children—improving patient care, advancing research, and pursuing
innovative programs. The donors listed below contributed between $100 and
$999 between January 1 and December 31, 2009.
Friends Raise Funds for Nemours
Many friends in the community sponsor special events to benefit children
being treated by Nemours. These events include golf, cheerleading and tennis
tournaments, walks, runs, dinners and more. Touchingly, some fundraising
efforts are led by children who just want to help other kids. Nemours Fund for
Children’s Health is grateful for the generosity and kindness of these donors.
After Rich and Franny Bertolino
lost their eight-year-old daughter
Casey to brain cancer, their niece
and nephew, Lisa and Greg Sabatino,
decided to sponsor a Wiffle ® Ball
in her memory to raise funds for
cancer patients. In its first year, the
event raised $9,000, attracting 400
participants playing in 32 teams. Rich
and Franny have asked that the funds
be used to provide amenities for children who are being treated for cancer at
Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children.
Brendan Rush Golf Outing
Brendan Rush has type 1 diabetes. His
father, Michael, sponsors an annual
golf outing to raise funds to benefit
diabetes research and education at
Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital
for Children. Now in its third year,
the golf outing has raised an amazing
total of $41,000, including matching
gifts from Tyco, Michael’s employer.
Golf Balls for a Good Cause
Brothers Braydin and Torin wanted
to help their younger sister Karina,
a cancer survivor, and other kids by
raising money for cancer research.
The boys collect stray golf balls from
the outskirts of the course near their
home and then clean and re-sell the
balls to golfers. Braydin and Torin
contributed $1,500 to the Nemours
Center for Childhood Cancer
Research in 2009.

How Your Gift Helps Children
Your contribution has a direct impact on the health and well-being of
children. In 2009, funds were distributed to improve care for our patients,
underwrite life-saving biomedical research, provide supportive services for
patients and their families, and educate our clinical staff to improve their
knowledge and skills.
Here are just a few examples showing how gifts from donors like you help
Nemours keep children healthy—both now and in the future:
Renovations were made to hematology/oncology patient care areas
at Nemours Children’s Clinic, Jacksonville, where children receive
treatments for leukemia, sickle cell disease and hemophilia.
Equipment was purchased for the Pediatric Auditory and Speech
Sciences Center at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children to
help diagnose and treat children with conditions affecting their speech
and hearing.
The art therapy program at Nemours Children’s Clinic, Orlando,
received funding to continue giving sick children an opportunity to
express their feelings and creativity.
Equipment and supplies were purchased to establish a Tumor Bank,
which archives tissue samples from patients used to test new drugs
for childhood cancers and other diseases.
Pacemakers and other equipment for treating cardiac patients was
acquired for the use of the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit of Nemours/
Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children. Many of the patients
receiving care are newborn babies.
Gifts From the Heart
Kids are still kids, even though they may be hospitalized or receiving
outpatient treatments such as chemotherapy. Toys, board games, DVDs,
books, craft supplies, video games, dolls, new stuffed animals and other
items go a long way towards helping children stay happy and occupied
during days, weeks or even months in the hospital.
Our Child Life Specialists help children cope with their hospital experience
by using toys, games, crafts and activities to relieve stress and provide a
distraction from medical tests and treatments.
Individuals, churches, schools, corporations, civic associations and
other groups often donate these items. We are most grateful for their
thoughtfulness and generosity.
The Auxiliary of the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children
Since its founding in 1985, the Auxiliary of the Alfred I. duPont Hospital
for Children has made a significant impact on the well-being of families and
children through their many gifts of time and resources.
The Auxiliary, 100 members strong, operates The Red Balloon Gift Shop,
which offers a wealth of gifts, toys, games and other items. All proceeds from
the Shop, a favorite stop for families and Nemours staff alike, are donated
to the Hospital, as are funds raised from book sales, fudge sales and other
events.
Auxilians staff the Hospital’s Family Resource Center, Admissions Service
and a twice-daily Hospitality Hour that offers complimentary refreshments
to families. Children become more familiar with the hospital through the
Auxiliary’s Hospital Awareness Program.
In the last 25 years, Auxiliary members have contributed more than 225,000
hours of service and $600,000 to meet the needs of children and families, such
as new furniture for waiting areas or a generous gift to help build the Family
Resource Center. Our Auxilians are also very proud of the Financial Assistance Fund, which offers help to families with
expenses such as transportation, utility bills or other urgent needs during their child’s illness and hospitalization.

AstraZeneca—Investing in Children’s Health
Global pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca is more than just a close
neighbor of Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital in Wilmington, Delaware. It
is a generous and involved friend. The company’s transformational $1 million
gift in 2009 to support the hospital’s planned expansion is the latest example
of its partnership with Nemours.
“The Hospital is such an important resource for families,” says Rich Fante,
President US and RVP North America for AstraZeneca. As a parent of threeyear-old
twins, I can tell you that it is a great comfort to know that world-class
medical treatment is available so close to home.”
The company has been a generous sponsor of A Night at Nemours for all five
years the black-tie event has been held. Through AstraZeneca’s Healthcare
Heroes program, volunteers presented “Shadow Buddies” dolls to the
Hospital’s Child Life program. These dolls help children understand their
medical conditions and provide a special friend.
In 2009, a gift from AstraZeneca made possible The Body Theater, a video
display located in a busy waiting area of the hospital. It shows three hours of
engaging child-oriented content including video, games, quizzes and mystery
pictures in both English and Spanish to help children and their families gain a
better understanding of asthma.
Nemours Fund for Children’s Health is grateful to AstraZeneca and its
employees for caring so much about children and their health.
Many Ways to Help
Nemours Children’s Hospital
“For us, it’s more than just putting up a building. We see the
“Skanska is proud to be part of a team effort to provide outstanding health care facilities for Nemours,” says Mr.
Hames. “We see tremendous potential in what this organization does for children.”

Doing the Right Thing for Children—David and Katie Hancox
By his freshman year in high school, David Hancox, RN,
BSN, knew what he wanted to do with his life. “That was
the year my dad was diagnosed with colon cancer. I saw
the importance of good nursing care and it really grew on
me,” he remembers.
David, now a nurse manager of a medical/surgical unit at
Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, and his
wife Katie, a teacher, are the parents of two young boys—
Luke (4) and Liam (2). Unfortunately, David lost both his
father and mother to cancer well before their time.
“These events got me thinking about our plans for the
future much earlier in life than most people,” he says.
“Katie and I both work with children, so arranging for a
bequest to Nemours was a very simple decision. It was the
right thing to do.”
David, a nurse with Nemours for eleven years, grew up
with a tradition of giving back. His parents had several
charitable causes to which they were devoted.
“In nursing, I really found my niche in life,” says David.
“Beyond the bedside care we provide, nurses have a
special opportunity to build relationships with patients
and families—whether they are here for a few days or
return many times because of a chronic condition. We do
everything it takes to meet their needs and provide the best
care possible.”
“In my role as nurse manager, I am able to effect positive
change for children by helping my staff to deliver excellent
care and create bonds with patient families,” comments
David.
“David and I are already teaching our boys to be aware
that not everyone is as fortunate as they are,” says Katie.
“We want the impulse to help others to be inside them.”
“When I reflect on my own life, I realize how lucky I am
to do this work,” says David. “I am grateful each day for
what I have.”

Your Legacy for Children
There has never been a better time to place your trust
in Nemours to give children a healthier future. With a
planned gift, such as a bequest, you help to ensure that
the best care, the most advanced research and innovative
health and education programs will benefit children even
beyond your own lifetime.
Now there’s an easy way to explore your options
for a legacy gift. Our new planned giving web pages
(www.nemours.org/planyourlegacy) offer a wealth of
information about bequests, trusts and other types of
planned gifts. There are even interactive features such
as a gift calculator. Many gift plans offer significant tax
benefits for you and for your loved ones.
When you inform the Nemours Fund for Children’s
Health of your plans to leave a legacy for children, you
will become a member of The Carillon Society and receive
a special recognition gift.
Your Gift Saves Lives
In the beautiful, light-filled Cardiac Intensive Care Unit
at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, tiny
newborns with serious heart defects and older children
with cardiac disease are cared for by a dedicated staff of
physicians, surgeons, nurses and respiratory therapists.
In 2009, life-saving equipment such as temporary
pacemakers and an airway cart were purchased for the
Cardiac Intensive Care Unit with funds contributed by our
donors.
Michele Derderian, RN, cares for patients in the Unit.
“Sometimes children develop a heart rhythm abnormality
during surgery. A temporary pacemaker helps them. If
the problem doesn’t resolve on its own, a permanent
pacemaker may be implanted.”
“Pacemakers are also used for older children who have
cardiac arrhythmias due to illness or prior surgeries,”
says Michele. “We are grateful to have these additional
pacemakers available, especially the ones that help both
sides of the heart pump.”
Respiratory therapist Denise Sebzda also works with
young patients in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. She
frequently uses a new airway cart made possible by donor
support.
“In an emergency situation, it’s important to have
everything right there on the cart, so you are not hunting
for equipment or supplies when every moment counts,”
she says.
“Here is an good example of how the airway cart is used:
a baby girl had a breathing tube put in during surgery,
but when the tube was later removed she struggled to
breathe. We were able to put in a new tube at the bedside.
Everything we needed was right on the cart.”
“The airway cart has a fiberoptic light that allows us to
better visualize the airway, making the whole process
easier,” says Denise. “It helps us bring these children
through life-threatening crises.”
“I love what we do,” comments Michele. “Kids can look
forward to a more normal childhood.”
