<strong>George</strong> <strong>Cicero</strong> <strong>Smith</strong>, <strong>Sr</strong>., <strong>MD</strong><br />
Born in Lineville, <strong>Alabama</strong> in 1936, Dr. <strong>George</strong> C. <strong>Smith</strong>, <strong>Sr</strong>., graduated from<br />
Lineville High School as valedictorian of his class. He went on to earn his B.S. in<br />
Pharmacy from Howard College in Birmingham. In 1965 he received his medical<br />
degree from the <strong>Medical</strong> College of <strong>Alabama</strong>, then completed his internship at<br />
Lloyd Noland Hospital in Fairfield, <strong>Alabama</strong>. Returning to Lineville in 1966, Dr.<br />
<strong>Smith</strong> founded the Lineville Clinic, which he directed until 1972; from 1973 to<br />
2005 he was President of Clay County <strong>Medical</strong> Clinics. From the beginning of his<br />
practice, Dr. <strong>Smith</strong> has served on the staff of the Clay County Hospital, including<br />
service as Chief of Staff, <strong>Medical</strong> Director of Surgical Services, <strong>Medical</strong> Director<br />
of Surgical Case Review, <strong>Medical</strong> Director of Pharmacy Services, and Assistant<br />
<strong>Medical</strong> Director of Critical Care Services. He is also the <strong>Medical</strong> Director of the<br />
Lineville Health and Rehabilitation Facility. Dr. <strong>Smith</strong> is a member of the<br />
<strong>Alabama</strong> Board of <strong>Medical</strong> Examiners’ Joint Committee on Advanced Practice<br />
Nursing and is Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Behavioral<br />
Community Medicine of the College of Community Health Sciences of the<br />
University of <strong>Alabama</strong>.<br />
During his long career, Dr. <strong>Smith</strong> has been active in many local, state and<br />
national medical organizations. He is a member of the Clay County <strong>Medical</strong><br />
Society and the American <strong>Medical</strong> Association, a diplomate of the American<br />
Board of Family Medicine and the National Board of <strong>Medical</strong> Examiners, and a<br />
member and fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. An active<br />
member of the <strong>Medical</strong> Association of the State of <strong>Alabama</strong>, he served on their<br />
Task Force on Health Care Reform in 1992, on their Board of Censors from 1994<br />
to 2005, and as chairman from 2000 to 2005. President of the <strong>Alabama</strong> Academy<br />
of Family Physicians from 1991 to 1992, he was the Chairman of the AAFP Board<br />
of Directors from 1993 to 1994. A member of the <strong>Alabama</strong> State Board of <strong>Medical</strong><br />
Examiners from 1994 to 2005, Dr. <strong>Smith</strong> served as Chairman from 2000 to 2005.<br />
The <strong>Alabama</strong> State Department of Health appointed him to their State Committee<br />
in 1994, electing him Chairman from 2000 to 2005.<br />
<strong>George</strong> <strong>Smith</strong> has received many honors in recognition of his dedication. A<br />
member of the Rho Chi Pharmacy Honor Society and the Alpha Omega Alpha<br />
Honorary <strong>Medical</strong> Society, he was the recipient of the University of <strong>Alabama</strong><br />
<strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Alumni</strong> Association’s Garber Galbraith <strong>Medical</strong>-Political Service Award<br />
in 2004. In 1999, the <strong>Alabama</strong> State Legislature passed a resolution to name the
Clay County Health Department Building in his honor and in 2005 the Legislature<br />
passed another resolution commending his outstanding professional service.<br />
Dr. <strong>Smith</strong> has also been an asset to his community outside of the medical field.<br />
From 1973 to 1985 he was a member of Lineville’s City Council, served as a<br />
trustee for Lineville City Schools from 1972 to 1984, and filled a number of<br />
positions within the Administrative Council of the First United Methodist Church<br />
of Lineville. An avid cattleman, Dr. <strong>Smith</strong> not only breeds cattle on his family<br />
farm, Crooked Creek Farm, but was also the President of the <strong>Alabama</strong> Cattlemen’s<br />
Association from 1985 to 1986 and President of the Southeastern Livestock<br />
Exposition 1994 to 1996.<br />
Dr. <strong>George</strong> C. <strong>Smith</strong>, <strong>Sr</strong>., is an outstanding example of the type of physician<br />
envisioned by the founders of <strong>Alabama</strong> medical education in 1859: well-trained<br />
practitioners dedicated to serving their communities, and improving the lives of<br />
people throughout the state.
