TO: Prospective <strong>Indiana</strong> 4-H Horse Show Judges<br />

Thank you for your interest in helping 4-H’ers learn valuable life skills acquired through the 4-H Horse and Pony<br />

Program. We need people dedicated to developing youth with self-confidence, oral communication skills, and<br />

sportsmanship. Our list of <strong>Indiana</strong> 4-H Horse Show Judges is updated annually and is in turn distributed to all 92 County<br />

Extension Offices and to any other interested clientele for the purpose of providing names of potential judges.<br />

How to be placed on one of the lists for the first time<br />

1. Complete and submit an application form with a $20 (online test) or $30 (paper test) fee payable to <strong>Purdue</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> by October 15, 2011.<br />

2. Attend the 4-H Horse Judges’ and Show Managers Seminar in person on November 18-20 in East Lansing, MI.<br />

Register information can be found at: http://www.ans.msu.edu/ans/horse_programs<br />

3. Take the test based on the <strong>Indiana</strong> 4-H Horse and Pony Handbook (4-H 661), and general judging knowledge, and<br />

obtain a score of 85% or above. The test will be available to take online. Upon receipt of your application,<br />

application fee, and the ABE form you will be emailed the link, and the password to take the online test.<br />

The test must be completed by November 14. If you do not have access to the internet, a paper test<br />

(Scantron) will be mailed which requires an additional $10 handling fee. The completed paper test<br />

(Scantron) must be returned by November 1, 2011 to allow time for scoring. No late tests will be accepted,<br />

and test results will be available at the judge’s conference. If we do not receive the paper test by November 1, you<br />

may still take the test online until the deadline of November 14.<br />

4. Complete and sign <strong>Indiana</strong> 4-H Horse and Pony Judges Adult Behavioral Expectations (ABE) form (attached to<br />

application) and return along with your application by October 15, 2011.<br />

How to stay on the list<br />

1. Complete and submit an application form with a $20 (online test) or $30 (paper test) fee payable to <strong>Purdue</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> by October 15, 2011.<br />

2. Attend the Multi-State judges’ seminar, at least once every three years. If you are planning to attend this year’s<br />

seminar, Register information can be found at: http://www.ans.msu.edu/ans/horse_programs<br />

3. Complete the Judges test and score 85% or above. The test will be available to take online. Upon receipt of<br />

your application, application fee, and the ABE form you will be emailed the link, and the password to take<br />

the online test. The test must be completed by November 14. If you do not have access to the internet, a<br />

Must complete judging at the Multi State Judges School with a minimum of 70%.<br />

Must have three reference letters from experienced horse people (at least one from a show manager.)<br />

The reference letter should contain information justifying the writer’s qualifications to write a letter of<br />

reference for a 4-H Horse and Pony Judge. Reference letters must be received in the office by November<br />

14, 2011.<br />

Novice- Renewal – Currently on the Novice list.<br />

Novice – New – must attend seminar.<br />

Must attend the 2011 Judges School, and complete the judging portion of the conference.<br />

These Adult Behavioral Expectations give faculty, educators, staff and volunteers the opportunity to reaffirm their<br />

commitment and dedication to the well-being of young people. When all faculty, educators, staff and volunteers sign a<br />

copy of this document, individuals are making a collective statement that youth in the 4-H/Youth Development Program<br />

are being treated with respect, dignity, and attention to individual needs. The faculty, educators, staff and volunteers who<br />

work with the 4-H/Youth Development Program in <strong>Indiana</strong> are proud of the quality educational programs provided to<br />

youth of this state and to their personal commitment to nurture the positive growth and development of youth.<br />

In my role as a 4-H/Youth Development Program faculty, educator, staff, or volunteer I will:<br />

• Respect, adhere to, and enforce the rules, policies, and guidelines established by the <strong>Purdue</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

Cooperative Extension Service including all laws related to child abuse and substance abuse.<br />

• Conduct myself in a courteous, respectful manner, exhibit good sportsmanship, and demonstrate<br />

reasonable conflict management skills.<br />

• Be truthful and forthright when representing the 4-H/Youth Development Program.<br />

• Under no circumstances allow, consume, or be under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs at<br />

4-H/Youth Development Program events or activities.<br />

• Recognize that verbal or physical abuse, failure to comply with equal opportunity and anti-discrimination<br />

laws, or committing criminal acts are not acceptable practices in 4-H/Youth Development Programs.<br />

• Accept my responsibility to represent 4-H/Youth Development Programs with dignity and pride by being<br />

a positive role model for youth.<br />

• Accept supervision and support from salaried Extension staff or designated management volunteers.<br />

• Participate in orientation and training, which includes youth protection standards, sponsored by the<br />

<strong>Purdue</strong> Cooperative Extension Service.<br />

• Operate machinery, vehicles, and other equipment in a safe and responsible manner when working with<br />

youth participating in 4-H/Youth Development Programs.<br />

• Treat animals in a humane manner and teach program participants appropriate animal care and<br />

management.<br />

• Use technology in an appropriate manner that reflects the best practices in youth development.<br />

• Accept my responsibility to promote and support the 4-H/Youth Development Program in order to<br />

develop an effective county, state, and national program.
