Hello Everyone, 

Well, the holiday season is here. 

As you read this, Studio 21 

should be in full gear with the 

Christmas party just around the 

corner. For those that have 

come to our Christmas party 

before, we look forward to seeing 

you again. If you have been to 

one, plan to come for a few 

hours of great fellowship and an 

all-around good time. Don’t 

forget to bring a turning-related 

present to exchange. An ornament 

too, if you can. 

2002 has been a great year for 

the club. We have grown to 

about 180 members, we raised 

more for the Toy-for Tots program 

than ever before, the mini 

symposium was a great hit, and 

the fun just continues. We will 

be having lots of great programs 

for 2003, so keep on coming. 

Here’s wishing you a happy 

holiday season and a great new 

year.

15 th Annual Nan Bushley 

Christmas Party and 

Gift Exchange 

December 7 th will be the San Diego Woodturner’s 

15 th Annual Christmas Party and Gift Exchange. 

The party will run from 10am to 2pm and will be 

at the San Diego Woodturning Centre. 

So many times at club meetings, 

there is very little time 

to mingle with your fellow 

turners to talk shop, share 

war stories, and bemoan that 

prize tree that got away. 

Well, the Christmas party is 

made to order. Come and join 

us for a fun-filled time of 

food, talk and gift-sharing. 

We are asking you to bring finger food for ten 

people. If you would like to participate in the gift 

exchange, please bring a wrapped gift. Only 

those that bring gifts will receive a gift. Bring 

something that you have turned or a turningrelated 

item. We will also have an ornament exchange. 

This will work just like the gift exchange, 

so wrap a turned ornament to share as well. 

Bring your significant other and family and come 

celebrate the holidays with us. We look forward 

to seeing you there.

Top-A-Thon Wrap-Up 

Take Two! 

I guess I spoke a little too soon. Due to a conflict with the Marines, 

the shopping tip did not occur on November 19 th as originally 

planned. Instead, the trips to both Oceanside and Chula Vista will 

be at 7:30pm on December 3 rd . The final results, of course, only get 

better by waiting. We are now over $3,800! 

If you would like to help, please contact Lorin Youde who will be 

leading the charge at the Oceanside WalMart and Don Owen who 

will be heading up the Chula Vista WalMart binge. WalMart has 

graciously donated to the cause by giving us a 10% discount. So

Please continue to help make this Christmas a little brighter for less 

advantaged children. 

SDWT Photo Directory - Last Call 

We are trying to complete the photo directory once the new club officers 

have been elected. We need you to stop by the San Diego 

Woodturning Centre to get your picture, if you haven’t already done so. 

Just check with Ernest at (858) 513-0088 to make sure he is around. 

He will also be taking pictures at the Christmas party and at the January 

meeting. We are now missing just 46 of you, so please come by when 

you can.

Future Club and 

Woodturning Centre 

Programs 

We have a very exciting line-up 

of guest demonstrators for 2003. 

We have three internationally 

known turners coming to provide 

demonstrations to our club. 

They will also be giving hands-on 

workshops at the San Diego 

Woodturning Centre for those 

that are interested. Coming in 

2003 are: 

Clay Foster – February 15 th 

(Clay is known for carving, 

texturing and enhancements) 

Trent Bosch – April 5 th (Trent 

creates vessels that appear to 

be turned inside others) 

Jimmy Clewes - October 18 th 

(Jimmy does exciting designs) 

Clay Foster is a self-taught 

woodturner, a founding charter 

member of American Assn of 

Woodturners and is President 

Emeritus of Woodturners of 

North Texas. Clay is mostly 

known for his deep hollow forms 

and his artistic carving, coloring 

and texturing on his pieces. He 

will be demonstrating these 

various techniques. 

We will provide additional information 

about the Trent Bosch 

and Jimmy Clewes Club demonstrations 

as their dates approach. 

If you are interested in taking a 

three-day workshop with Clay, 

please contact the Woodturning 

Centre before the end of December. 

If several people want to 

take classes, Ernest will book 

him for the following week.

Trent Bosch and Jimmy Clewes

The Raffle Report 

Since we are having both the 

Christmas gift exchange and 

the ornament exchange this 

month, will will not be having a

NOMINATIONS FOR NEW CLUB BOARD 

MEMBERS ARE NOW BEING ACCEPTED 

As mentioned in the last newsletter 

and at the last club meeting, 

we are in the process of 

electing new board members 

for the San Diego 

Woodturners. The election will 

be held at the January 15 th club 

meeting. 

The board of directors is 

responsible for the operation 

of our club. They vote for club 

officers, they select committee 

chairs for: programs, the 

newsletter, the raffle, the video 

librarian, etc. They oversee 

the club’s finances. 

Part of the process of incorporation 

is that the group is 

required to have a board of 

directors. At that time, the 

group decided to have 15 

directors each with 3-year 

terms. To keep the board 

experience somewhat consistent, 

it was also decided that 

one third of the board would 

rotate off each year. So, it is 

now time nominate members 

for election to the board of 

directors. 

The bylaws state that a director 

will serve a 3-year term, but 

that they may not serve more 

than two consecutive terms. At 

the end of each year, the board 

must nominate a slate of 

candidates to fill the open 

seats. The entire membership 

votes for the new directors and 

the top five vote getters are 

elected. Currently, all of the 

outgoing board members are 

eligible to serve again if they 

so choose.
