Objective<br />

Students will create a poem that describes the<br />

relationship of the different parts of machines to how the<br />

whole machine works.<br />

3.5 B The student knows that systems exist in the world<br />

and will observe a simple system and describe the roles<br />

of the various parts.<br />

Materials/Technology<br />

Poem format for students to follow, pictures of different<br />

machines, paper, prisma colors, glue, scissors<br />

Procedure<br />

1. Teacher reviews what a system is and gives<br />

examples. Discuss how each system is made of<br />

individual parts that work together so that the<br />

machine can do whatever it is supposed to do.<br />

2. Teacher introduces poem format to students.<br />

Instruct the students that they are to pick a<br />

machine and describe the machine using the<br />

poem format. Teacher models by picking a<br />

machine and creating a poem together with the<br />

class following the format.<br />

3. When the poem is completed, students will draw<br />

and color a large picture of their machine. Trim<br />

the extra paper from around the edges of the<br />

poem. The poem will be glued on top of the<br />

picture of the machine.<br />

Line 1. Name of machine<br />

Line 2: Four descriptive parts of the machine.<br />

Line 3: What does this machine do?<br />

Line 4: Who loves this machine?<br />

Line 5: Who fears this machine?<br />

Line 6: Who needs….<br />

Line 7: Where would you get this?<br />

Line 8: Why would you need this machine?<br />

Line 9: How would your life be different without this<br />

machine?<br />
