N EW LIFE MASTERS
Dennis Wammack of Birmingham came to Atlanta
needing .14 gold, practically a rounding error. He easily
obtained it by finishing 2nd in the Wed-Thur KO’s.
Ann Crumpston of Charlotte, NC has earned her gold
card. Edward Bryan of Marietta, GA has too.
Knockouts are often a player’s best friend when
seeking gold points. This proved true for Marie Douglas of
Warner-Robins Georgia. Congratulations to all New LMS!
And congratulations to Steve Quisenberry of Kingsport,
TN, who advanced to the rank of Gold Life Master.
USING BIDDING BOXES
The use of bid boxes at clubs and tournaments has become pretty
standard, but if you’re new to duplicate, bid boxes may also be new to
you.
Here are some tips to make your first encounters pleasant:
Decide on your call before you touch a bid card. Don’t think with your
fingers—decide whether you’re going to bid 2? or 3? before you
reach for that bid card.
Look at the bid card before pulling it completely out of the box. You’d
find it hard to convince a director that you inadvertently pulled the
“pass” card when you meant to
bid 6? .
Display your bid cards neatly left to
right in front of you. If all four players
do this, a complete record of the
auction is displayed.
Conclude the auction properly by
placing your “pass” card on the
table.
Even when the auction has concluded,
don’t rush to gather up
your bid cards and place them
back in the box. Many players
find it helpful to let all bid cards
remain on the table until North
has recorded the final contract
and the opening lead has been
made.
Try to avoid inadvertent calls.
What is normally a clear situation
with spoken bidding becomes
somewhat hazy when bid boxes
are used.
The Laws reads: Until his partner
makes a call, a player may substitute
his intended call for an inadvertent
call but only if he does
so, or attempts to do so, without
pause for thought.
An inadvertent call is inadvertent
if—and only if—it was a “slip of
the fingers,” the bid box equivalent
of a “slip of the tongue. ”
You reached for the 3? card but
the 3? card accidentally came
out.
In these situations, the correct
call may be substituted without
penalty. A player who calls attention
to the inadvertent bid as
soon as he notices what he actually
pulled from the bid box has
done so without pause for
thought, even if some time has
elapsed.
This is the “oops” rule: with
spoken bidding, you would have
said, “Three clubs—oops, I
meant three diamonds.” With
bid boxes, you may say,
“Oops” and substitute the 3?
card for the 3? card.
ATLANTA JUNIOR BRIDGE
Coming off a busy Summer and looking at an overfull
Fall schedule we are anticipating a good turn-out
at the Labor Day Regional game on Saturday.
Beginning in September, AJB will have three ACBL
sanctioned games a month that students can play in;
Marietta, Norcross and Alpharetta. We expect that
this will take time to build attendance at all three
games, but hope that having three venues will make
it easier for our students to find a game that fits their
schedules
We petitioned the ACBL to create a Youth North
American Bridge Championship. They approved the
request and the first will be held in Atlanta in July
2008. The second annual Youth Open Pairs State
Championship will be held in December 2007.
All in all we’ve had a busy seven months and are
looking forward to the fall and our new ‘crop’ of
students
TODAY’S YOUTH REDISCOVER THE GAME OF BRIDGE
B Y PATTY TUCKER
All parents are concerned about their child’s development; and while traditional educational-based programs such
as sports, music, dance and art help to positively address these concerns. There is one more program, seldom
considered, which can be equally effective in a young person’s mental and social enrichment and in developing selfcontrol;
it can — even lead to improved overall academic performance in school. What is this? Bridge.
The game of Bridge is inexpensive
The game of Bridge transcends race, religion, creed, economic, geographic, social and generational barriers
The game of Bridge is inclusive -- an activity that requires no physical skill or athletic prowess
The game of Bridge is rich in social and cultural interaction – enabling children to make friends and meet people
from all over the world
Best of all, the game of Bridge is FUN!
Bridge is a game rich in history -- your parents and grandparents played. Bridge is a game with many notable players
-- world and business leaders from all walks of life. Avid bridge players such as: Dwight Eisenhower, Omar Sharif, Bill
Gates, Warren Buffett to name a few.
But today, there is a new generation rediscovering the game of bridge -- your children’s generation!! Today’ s
youth are rediscovering the challenging, complex, rewarding and fascinating Game of Bridge.
Atlanta Junior Bridge (AJB), a non-profit organization founded in 2006, has been teaching children, from the ages
of 6 to 18, in the greater Atlanta area at no charge for nearly two years. By working with other youth-focused bridge
organizations such as, American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) and the School Bridge League (SBL), AJB has
helped to offer new opportunities to compete to groups of children all over the world; helping them to play and enjoy the
game of Bridge.
Now that there are significant numbers of young people who are playing Bridge, Tucker thought that there should be
a time and place for these kids to meet and play against each other. The ACBL agreed. So in the Summer of 2008, the
first Youth North American Bridge Championship (YNABC) will take place in Atlanta, GA. This event to be held on
Saturday, July 5 th and Sunday, 6 th 2008 will draw young people together from all over the world to compete. The
Championship will consist of a two-session pair event on Saturday and a two-session Swiss Team event on Sunday.
We anticipate that this event is the start of what will be an annual meeting of our brightest minds. Come and indulge
in a rich experience that blends all cultures in a single venture. We look forward to your participation, and appreciate
your time in encouraging these youths in their pursuit of excellence.
Atlanta Junior Bridge: Bridging the gap between learning fun and healthy competition. For more information, please
visit AJB at www.AtlantaJuniorBridge.org
School BRIDGE LEAGUE: A division of The LEAGUE is dedicated to exposing, engaging and empowering youth to
the game of bridge. For more information, please visit SBL at www.SchoolBridgeLeague.org.
American Contract Bridge League: The world’s greatest bridge club for the world’s greatest game. The ACBL’ s
mission is to promote the fun and challenge of bridge and support educational and playing opportunities for bridge
enthusiasts throughout North America. For more information, visit the ACBL’s web site at www.acbl.org.
A GLOSSARY OF BRIDGE TERMS
New members of ACBL are often confused by the array of terms they
hear: knockout teams, red points, rookie. Here’s a list of terms and
their meanings:
Knockout Teams: an event in which a team (of four, five or six players -
- with four playing at a time) plays another team. The losers are eliminated
or “knocked out” while the winners play other winners until only
one winning team remains. The length of a KO match may vary from a
single session to a full day (the Vanderbilt and Spingold) to a multiday
event (the Bermuda Bowl and the Olympiad).
Bracketed Knockout Teams: a KO event in which teams are divided into
groups—usually of 8, 16 or 32 teams—based on their masterpoint holdings.
The top group—Bracket I—and all other groups compete in a separate
event with their own set of winners.
Compact Knockout Teams: a shorter version of Bracketed KO teams.
Swiss Teams: an event in which a team (of four, five or six players --
with four playing at a time) plays other teams in seven-, eight- or nineboard
matches. Team A sits North-South at Table 1 and East-West at
Table 2 while Team B sits East-West at Table 1 and North-South at
Table 2. The results are compared and scored by International Match
Points (IMPs).
Pairings for the first round are random. Pairings for succeeding rounds
are determined by a team’s win-loss record or Victory Point total.
International Match Points (IMPs): the most common method of scoring
Swiss Team matches. If Team A scores plus 620 for bidding and
making 4ªon Board 4 and Team B scores only plus 170 (they didn’t
bid the game), the difference is 450—which converts to 10 IMPs. The
IMP chart is shown on the inside of your convention card.
Victory Points (VPs): a method of scoring Swiss Team matches.
After the scores are compared and converted to IMPs, the IMP total is
converted to Victory Points. A team’s VP total may be used to determine
its next opponents and its final standing.
Side Series: single-session pair games that pay red points. The Early
Bird Series, for example, will be played at 9:00 a.m. beginning Tuesday
and everyday thereafter. Pairs may play in one, two, three or all sessions.
Only pairs who play in at least two sessions are eligible for overall
gold points.
Flighted pairs: When flighting is used, the field is divided by expertise or
experience or both into several separate games. Flight A —- “unlimited
masterpoints” -- will be open to all players while the remaining flights
will be limited. Flight B might be 0-500 MPs or 0 –1000 MPs while Flight
C might be 0–300 or 0–500. Each flight is scored individually, and
masterpoint awards are made for each flight. The masterpoint holdings
of the players determine their flight. If one player is quite expert while his
partner is new to the game, the pair must compete in Flight A. In flighted
events, you may play up but not down. That means you may play in
Flight A or Flight B even if your masterpoint holding qualifies you for
Flight C. Conversely, you may not play in Flight B or Flight C if you are a
Flight A player.
Stratified Pairs: The idea is to compete against everyone but to be
ranked only with your peers. Each pair is assigned a stratum or “strat”
based on the masterpoint holding of the partner with more masterpoints.
Example:
A = 1000+ masterpoints; B = 300–1000 MPs; C = 0 –300 MPs.
Thus, the most experienced players are placed in Strat A, intermediate
players in Strat B and less experienced players in Strat C. Masterpoints
are awarded for placings in all strats but gold points are awarded only in
A and B.
The game proceeds normally -- the difference comes when the scores
are tabulated and ranked. In a three-strat game, the scores are ranked
three times. The first ranking is done as in a regular open game. These
are the Strat A results. If a B or C pair does well in this ranking, they
receive full credit for that performance. It is not all that uncommon for a
Strat C pair to place first overall, and they receive the full masterpoint
award for that game. Note: A pair is eligible for only one set of masterpoint
awards and automatically receives the highest award. The second
ranking compares the scores of only the B and C pairs -- the scores of
the Strat A pairs are eliminated. Once again, if a C pair does well, they
receive points for their finishing position in the Strat B results. The third
and final ranking compares the scores of only the C pairs -- all the
scores of the Strat A and B pairs are eliminated.
Strati-Flighted Pairs: The top group plays in a game of their own -- Flight
A. The rest of the field in divided into strats and plays as in a regular
stratified pairs. A recent innovation has been stratifying within Flight A.
Flight A-1 may be listed as 3000+ MPs while Flight A-2 (or Flight X)
may be listed as 0–3000 MPs.
Masterpoints: the unit which measures bridge achievement in competition.
Masterpoints are awarded at ACBL clubs and tournaments in
amounts proportional to the size and classification of the event and the
rating of the club or tournament.
Black points: awarded at club games. Some special club games award
red, gold or silver points.
Red points: awarded for section placements at regional tournaments
and NABCs. Also awarded at clubs for special events such as the qualifying
rounds of the North American Open Pairs and the Grand National
Teams.
Silver points: awarded at sectional tournaments. Also awarded at Sectional
Tournaments at Clubs (StaC).
Gold points: awarded for section firsts and overall placing in regionally
rated events.
Platinum points: awarded for NABC and higher events.
Gold points are also awarded for section firsts and overall placing in
regional events of two or more sessions that have a masterpoint limit of
750 or more points.
One gold point is awarded to section winners in the annual ACBL Instant
Matchpoint Game in sections of seven or more tables.
In addition, new players may now win gold points in their own NABC
events: ½ gold in the National 49’er Pairs at the Spring NABC, 1½ gold
in the National 199’er Pairs at the Summer NABC and 1.00 gold in the
National 99’er Pairs at the Fall NABC (the remainder of the award is
in red points).
A major source of gold points is the Bracketed Knockout Teams. The
overall awards for the top brackets are all gold while the lower brackets
may receive a percentage of gold points and the remainder in red points.
Barry Crane Top 500 race: This trophy is presented to the ACBL player
who wins the most masterpoints during a calendar year. Originally the
McKenney Trophy, it was put into play by William E. McKenney, ACBL
executive secretary. It was known as the McKenney Trophy from 1937
to 1981.
The list was expanded to include the top 500 players in 1982 and called
the Top 500 from 1982 to 1985. It was renamed the Barry Crane Top
500 in 1986.
Crane, who was murdered in July 1985, was ACBL’s top masterpoint
holder at that time and was acknowledged by his peers to be unequaled
as a masterpoint winner and a matchpoint player.
Mini-McKenney races: In 1974 the ACBL Board of Directors voted to
recognize masterpoint achievements among player below the rank of
Life Master. The Bridge Bulletin recognizes leaders ACBL-wide. At the
unit level, winners in each category receive recognition and special medallions.
All points won during a calendar year are counted in these races.
Ace of Clubs contests: This competition was created in 1984 to recognize
achievement at the club level. Winners are recognized at the unit
level as well as ACBL-wide.
Points won only at the club level -- excluding the North American Open
Pairs, the Grand National Teams and Sectional Tournaments at Clubs --
are counted in these races.
Masterpoint races: ACBL recognizes the players who win the most masterpoints
in their categories during the calendar year. The categories
include Life Master, Bronze LM, Silver LM, Gold LM, Diamond LM,
Grand LM, Youth, Junior, Senior and Richmond Trophy.
These are the various categories and the requirements for each category
at the beginning of a calendar year:
Will be December 5-9 2007 at the Hilton Northeast on
Peachtree Industrial Boulevard. Make your plans now for
the regional that masquerades as a sectional.
REWARD!
Anyone kibitzing or if you have the great fortune to
play against him needs to watch superstar John Onstott
carefully. Rumor is there’s a large cash reward if you
actually catch him making a mistake at the bridge table.
However, don’t expect to collect, as the last time John
made a mistake was Nov 2, 1985 (a day we still call
Black Monday. )
