Carol Lynn Fox, Show Chair
Carol Lynn’s first pet sitting client in the fall of 2003 was a
Bernese Mountain Dog named “Indy” and she had her at
“WOOF”! After becoming a member of the Grand Canyon State
Bernese Mountain Dog Club in the spring of 2004, she has held
various positions on the board including Director, Vice President
and currently is serving as club President since 2007. Carol Lynn
joined the BMDCA in 2005 and volunteers as the Regional Club
Council representative for the GCSBMDC and Northern Arizona
BMDC. She is a member of a local all breed club as well as a
founding member of the Working Dog Club of Arizona.
While breeding Bernese under the AKC registered kennel name
MahaRaja since 2007, she has produced four litters so far and is
very proud to have a Bred By Exhibitor champion along with two
special BMDCA National Specialty placements: Best Puppy and
Best Opposite in Futurity in 2008 and Best of Winners in 2009.
Carol Lynn also personally engages her dogs in Draft, Rally, Obedience
and Agility and enjoys teaching several classes a week including
conformation handling. Currently, Carol Lynn is an AKC
Canine Good Citizen evaluator and is working on meeting the requirements
to become an AKC Rally judge and hopes to become a
Conformation judge in the future.

2011 National Specialty Catalogs
2011 National Specialty Show Catalogs will go on sale Wednesday morning at
7:00am. The catalog sales area will be located ringside in the Wyland Center and
will be open thru Saturday. Pre-ordered catalogs will be available for pick up at any
time during the week.
Rescue Gallery
Bernese Mountain Dogs are rescued each year from
puppy mills, brokers, abandonment & from other
bad situations. The dogs are rescued by regional
clubs, private groups, from on-line sites & by individuals.
2011 is the 6th year for the Rescue Gallery which
has become a permanent fixture at the National
Specialty, honoring rescued Berners & their families.
The gallery consists of photos
& stories of about each
of the dogs entered.
This year there are 39 dogs
entered in the gallery from
28 families & each is proudly
entered in the Berner Garde
Database. We even have 2
dogs that have participated
in the gallery for all 6 years,
“Tapper” Roos-Dowler and
“Becca” Deering. Sadly,
Becca crossed The Bridge in
February, please be sure to
seek out her story at the gallery.
The gallery will be available for viewing throughout
the week & the owners of dogs entered will be
wearing a clay pin with their dogs names on gold
stars like the one in the photo and the dogs will be
wearing yellow bandanas.

Berners.

LongShots began at the 1998 Specialty in
Rhode Island after Pat Long had been given a
blue backdrop & studio lights as a birthday gift
by her husband. That first year Pat conducted
seven sessions & raised $350.
In 1999 Joye Neff attended her first National
Specialty & began assisting Pat with Long-
Shots; Joye helps get the expressive looks on the
dogs in the photos - speaking from experience,
she is an expert at shaking bags of treats &
squeaking toys at just the right moment. Over
the years LongShots has raised nearly $50,000
with the funds raised going to a variety of
Berner charities.

are first come,
first served.

dogs will be given preference
& moved to the

A session is about 25 photos, give or take. We
ask for a $50 donation which will go to Bernese
Mountain Dog charities. Costs of all materials
are donated by Pat Long.
You’ll receive a CD with the photos on it & a
printed copy of at least one of those photos. Let
us know if you’ll want to have more dogs done
at different times, we can wait to create one CD
with all the photos together & if you want to
share a session with someone else we can do that
too. We’re flexible!
Oh, & Pat doesn’t limit the sessions to Bernese,
she’ll even try to do photos of you with your dog
- she & Joye will try their best to make you look
as beautiful as your Berner!

such as BMDCA National Specialty catalogs,
BMDCA yearbooks, The Alpenhorn & Front
& Finish magazine.

The Specialty Triathlete Award is given to each Berner/Handler Team that qualifies in
3 or more different working venues at the 2011 Specialty. The eligible events are
tracking, herding, rally, obedience, agility and draft, and the performance must be at
the regular titling level. The award is offered by Ruth Nielsen and the Mazama Mountain
Dogs. The winners of the Specialty Triathlete Award will each receive a unique
Triathlete Bag filled with goodies.
In 2009, 7 teams earned the award & in 2010, 13 teams. Will you take the challenge
this year?

Bernese Mountain Dogs are working dogs!
Did you know there are six different performance venues that our versatile
Bernese Mountain Dogs will be competing in this week? If you’ve
never attended a draft test or obedience trial—then here’s your chance!
Here are details about the various venues as well as when and where
you can watch them live this week!
Draft
The BMDCA Draft Tests are a series of exercises designed to develop
and demonstrate the natural abilities of purebred Bernese
Mountain Dogs in a working capacity involving hauling. Bernese
have historically functioned as draft dogs in various capacities, and
performance of these exercises is intended to demonstrate skills resulting
from both inherent ability and training that are applicable to
realistic work situations. Efficiency in accomplishing the tasks is essential.
It is also desirable that the dogs evidence willingness and
enjoyment of their work in a combination of controlled teamwork
with their handlers and their own natural independence. There are
currently eight BMDCA Draft titles available. Information courtesy of

Draft tests will be held Tuesday & Friday at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. The ring will be next to
the Wyland Center. Exhibitor check in begins at 7:00am with judging to follow.
Rally AKC Rally is a sport in which the dog and handler complete a
course that has been designed by the rally judge. The judge tells the
handler to begin, the dog and handler proceed at their own pace through
a course of designated stations. Each of these stations has a sign providing
instructions regarding the next skill level that is to be performed.
Scoring is not as rigorous as traditional obedience. Unlimited communication
from the handler to the dog is to be encouraged and not penalized.
Unless otherwise specified in the Regulations, handlers are permitted
to talk, praise, encourage, clap their hands, pat their legs, or use any
verbal means of encouragement. Since no two courses are the same,
handlers are allowed a period of time to walk the course (without dogs)
prior to competing. Each course can offer its own unique challenges.
Rally promotes fun and enjoyment for dogs at all levels of competition.

Agility
Agility is a fairly new dog sport that is rapidly growing
in popularity and participation. As with most
sports, there is more to agility than it first appears. The
object is to complete the course accurately and as
quickly as possible. While one might think the dog and
handler would be experts once they mastered how to
do the obstacles, in fact that is only the foundation to
this challenging sport. There is much more to it. The
course layout and order of the obstacles are different at
every show. And, the exhibitor doesn't know what the
course is until the day of the show. Berners and Agility
- Many people’s first reaction to thinking about competing in agility with a Bernese Mountain
Dog is that the two don’t mix. Most Berners, in fact, turn out to be very good at agility. Their intelligence,
confidence and willingness to please are traits that are important to successful agility training.
Berners can do agility successfully although there is little denying that upper level titles are very difficult

Obedience
What is AKC Obedience? Obedience demonstrates
the usefulness of a dog as a companion to humankind,
AKC Obedience is a sport with rules, regulations,
judges, conditioning, training, placements
and prizes. Accuracy and precision are essential,
but the natural movement of the handler and the
willingness and enjoyment of the dog are very important.
Each level of obedience competition, novice,
open and utility - requires mastering a specific
skill set, which increases in difficulty, before advancing

Herding is one of the dog sports that relies on
pure instinct. There are different methods with
which dogs control the movement of livestock. In
herding terms, Bernese are “upright” (the dog
walks normally), “loose-eyed” (the dog does not
use its gaze in a fixed, predator stare to control the
stock) dogs. Learning the Bernese-style of herding
requires a trainer familiar with these traits. Berners
were traditionally used as drovers to herd slower, tame dairy cows. Speed was not a requirement for
this work, nor were more aggressive herding behaviors. Nothing can be substituted for instinct. Participating
in a Herding Capability Test is the best method to determine if your dog has instinct. Currently
Bernese can participate in AHBA Herding Trials as well as AKC Trials. Information courtesy of

Directions to Herding Test: North on Jimmy Durante Blvd, turn slight right on Via De La Valle,
merge onto I-5 South. Take the Carmel Valley Rd exit (#33) toward CA-56E. Turn left on Carmel
Valley Rd, take the CA-56 E ramp. Merge onto Ted Williams Pkwy. Merge onto I-15 North. Take
the Via Rancho Pkwy exit (#27). Turn right onto E Via Rancho Pkwy. E Via Rancho Pkwy becomes
Bear Valley Pkwy. Turn right on San Pasqual Rd. Turn right on Old Milky Way - Action K-9 Sports
is on the right.
AHBA Herding trials will be held Monday at Action K-9 Sports, beginning at 8:00am.
Tracking
Tracking is a basic form of search and rescue utilizing the instinctive canine scenting ability. Tracking
usually takes place in fields and woods and Bernese enthusiastically take to this sport. Bernese
love having a job to do and tracking is one of the most natural! AKC tracking events demonstrate that
a dog can follow a human scent trail through a myriad of other scents to locate a lost article, such as a
glove or wallet. In a tracking test, the trail or “track” is laid by a tracklayer who is a stranger to the
dog. The handler follows at least 20 feet behind the dog on a long lead and can give the dog verbal
encouragement. Finding the article dropped by the tracklayer indicates the end of the track. The dog
has then demonstrated scenting ability and perseverance

the San Diego Food Bank for us to donate any unwanted
dog food or treat samples. The San Diego
Food Bank works with a myriad of San Diego area
organizations in distributing food for both humans
and their pets.

any of your samples,
there will be a clearly
marked “drop-box” located
near the specialty
registration desk. Donations
will be accepted
thru Saturday morning.
