Civic Club Happenings At the last minute, it was decided to postpone the June Civic Club meeting for one week. Unfortunately, the word did not get out to everyone in time. The late notice resulted in a twofor-one special for some members and guests. Approximately 10 people gathered on June 2nd for meeting that they didn‘t know had been moved. Since we didn‘t put a notice on the Club House door — they thought the officers just forgot to turn up! From all reports, they had a good time anyway. Jan Finnerty described it as a rather unusual pot luck mix, but an enjoyable evening. As luck would have it, two new couples attended. Neal and April Nygaard, and Michael and Jennifer Nichols joined some regulars for the June pre-meeting event. Our apologies to all of those who were attended but were disappointed that the meeting wasn‘t held. The postponed meeting on June 9th was attended by about the same number of folks — if the two had been combined, it would have been a larger than usual turnout. Luckily, the Nygaards were curious enough to come back for the second meeting. We hope that the Nichols haven‘t been chased away forever. Samantha Fisher also joined us for the June 9th meeting and was promptly elected as the new Vice President. Elaine Sokoloff presented her first report as the new Treasurer. Pam House read the minutes prepared by Jan Finnerty. President Dennis Roberson, moved the meeting along briskly. The topics of conversation were mostly focused on the busy July schedule. There will be a Jammin’ on Jarboe on July 2nd — and a second Jammin‘ later in the month. Then on July 4th there will be the Golf Cart Parade, the Scholarship Committee Silent Auction, and the 4th of July Membership Drive, T-Shirt Sale, and Food Feast. Hamburgers, hot dogs, beer, margaritas will be available and donations accepted. Folks are encouraged to bring side dishes to share. The Golf Cart Parade registration will begin at 10:30 am at the Jarboe Bayou Park Pavilion. Arline Laughter volunteered to handle the registration and membership table. The parade will begin at 11:00 am. Dennis will arrange for the trophies that will be presented to the golf cart winners. We‘re hoping that Glenn Dowell and Allan Batchelor, ably assisted by Al Burns will act as Bar-B-Qers in chief for the mid-day festivities. You can count on the Suds Tub to make an appearance. T-shirts and golf shirts will be on sale. Don’t forget— it’s time to renew your Civic Club membership. Volunteers are always needed to make it all come together — especially for set-up and tear down. Give Dennis a call or send him an email if you can help. Next month‘s meeting will be on July 7 — just enough time to recover from Independence Day. We hope to see you then! Stair Chair Is Here! In April the Civic Club created a memorial fund to receive contributions in honor of Lowell Brown. The contributions came pouring in. More than enough funds were raised to pay for the Stair Chair (suggested by Lowell‘s family) for the use of Clear Lake Shores residents. It will be available for the assistance of residents e v e n i n n o n - emergency situations when aid is needed in moving up and down stairs. The Stryker Stair- PRO was delivered on June 28th. A plaque will be placed on the chair to acknowledge the source of the funds for its purchase. Our thanks go to Bernie McIntyre for providing some expert advice on choosing the chair and making sure we selected appropriate options. It looks like there will be some money left over in the memorial fund and the Civic Club will be looking for suggestions for how to use that money. Please join us at our next meeting to offer your suggestions. Editor’s Corner By Pam House This month you‘ll see some changes in The Islander. First, we welcome a new regular column: Playing in the Parks, Island Style by the Parks Committee Chair, Sheldon ―Bud‖ Solmonsson. He‘ll keep us up to date with the committee‘s activities and sometimes sneak in a little education about park-related issues. We‘re lucky to have him. Also, since we‘ve now integrated the ads throughout the pages of The Islander, we realized that the Advertiser‘s List wasn‘t really that helpful for most of our readers, and that it took two pages that might be better used. The Islander executive committee (that‘s me, Helle Brown and Mike Pons) decided to do away with the list. (If there is a huge outcry, we can always bring it back.) We‘ve been having such fun with the color on the front page, we thought we‘d give it a little more prominence. Therefore, you‘ll now find the President‘s Message (when it‘s available) inside the issue. The best change this month is all of the new contributions from a wide variety of islanders. You‘ll see stories about a beloved dog, a dancing contest winner, the dangers of driving a golf cart, a transatlantic sail, how to spot when someone is drowning, and two inspired by the 4 th of July – all received unsolicited from folks who aren‘t regular contributors. These combined with the columns from our repeat and monthly contributors have made for a very full issue; so full, we‘ve reduced the font size slightly to fit everything in. We hope you enjoy it (and that those aging eyes can still read it)! The Islander page 3 July 2011
