Suffolk Postal History 1 1703 EL Polstead Hall to London with Bishop Mark month above date. Willcocks 2, xxx Rated 'C'. Disinfected stain. Note the unique address and the writers comments "with care". 2 1712 EL Boxford to Stoke with Bishop Mark month above date. Willcocks 2, xxx Rated 'C'. Directed by 'Boxford Bagg' etc. Etc. "to be left at Beaumonts in Stoke". A house called "Club Room" was kept by a Michael Beaumont at this period. The charge was 7d. 3 1720 EL London to Polsted Hall with Bishop Mark Willcocks 3, xxx Rated 'C'. The letter was written and posted on the 20th April 1720. It went through a London receiving office where it was stamped with the receivers initial "K", and the Inland Bishop Mark for 26 AP. The charge to Suffolk was 7d. The "K" initial has not been recorded. 4 1727 EL Sheffield to Polsted Hall with Bishop Mark. Willcocks 3, xxx Rated 'B'. Written at Sheffield, Hants on the 4th January 1727 and directed "to goe by way of London please with care". The postage to London was 4d, then "m/s" 7d at London. Bishop Mark is 30 JA, making it 26 days before conveyance to Suffolk. The reason for delay could have been plague, as the letter appears to have been disinfected with sulphur and vinegar. 5 1733 EL London to Polsted Hall with Bishop Mark Willcocks 3, xx Rated 'B'. Charged 4d. To London, where it was "m/s" 7d., and back stamped with a Inland Bishop Mark 9JA. Directed "to goe by the way of London with care and speed". Back has a straight line town-stamp that is not clear. The letter deals with accounts and families since 1654. 6 1734 EL London to Polsted Hall Willcocks 3/362, xxx Rated 'B', xxx Rated 'F' (Westminster). Conveyed through London from Westminster on a Saturday. London Penny Post and a 21 SE Inland Bishop Mark. 7 1740 EL London to Polsted Hall Willcocks 3, xxx Rated 'B'. London, through Colchester to Stratford St. Mary, where a branch road leads to Stoke-by-Nayland, on the Boxford route. Bishop Mark 21 FE. The charge was 7d. 8 1743 EL Ipswich to Norwich Willcocks 181, xx Rated 'G'. Very scarce. Two line Ipswich IPS/WICH. To "go by way of Yarmouth". 9 1764 EL Woolpit to Bruges Willcocks 184, xx Rated 'E', xxxx Bishop Rated 'D'. SL Ipswich. Writer says "send my letters to Mr. Brook at Stowmarket". Mr. Brook was Postmaster during the 18th Century and Stowmarket was the nearest post office for London mail. A walking post went daily to and from Ipswich, 3d paid to London, 12th January inland stamp and General Post Paid in red were added. 10 1767 EL Bury St. Edmunds to Bruges Willcocks 76, xx Rated 'F', xxx Post Paid in red Rated 'C', xxx Bishop Mark rated 'B'. Post paid 3d with Bury town stamp and General Post Paid and 12FE inland Bishop Mark. Manuscript 3d., Bury to London 6d., London to Bruges. 11 1768 EL Bury St. Edmunds to Bruges Willcocks 76, xx Rated 'F', xxx Bishop Mark rated 'B'. Post paid 3d to London. Bury town stamp in black. Letter took one day to London, inland Bishop Mark 19 AU. Manuscript 6d. charge London to Bruges. Also General Post Paid stamp in red. 12 1769 EL Bruges to Bury St. Edmunds with Bishop Marks Willcocks 3, xxx Rated 'B', xx Bruges Straight Line. Charge of 6d., to London where it was "m/s" 1N1, which illustrates the shortened AND between the shilling and penny. Straight line BRUGES and with foreign and inland Bishop marks. 13 1770 EL Bruges to Stowmarket Willcocks/002, xxxx F/B with Bishop Marks Rated 'B'. This letter illustrates how mailmen were responsible for the / between shillings and pence. Originally the full word AND was used. Gradually the A and D were left out, and the letter shows the N alone used, this too was shortened to / for swiftness. Bears the foreign branch Bishop Mark, day OC 17, with the inland mark day above the month 17 OC. 14 1771 EL Prescot (Lancs) to Bodney (Norfolk) Willcocks 806/76, xxx Bury Rated 'F', xxx Prescot Rated 'E'. Scarce. Taken to BURY for London. "m/s" 8d. For conveying to Haughley, Suffolk, redirected to Bodney, Norfolk. Bears Prescot, Bury and Bishop Marks. 15 1777 EL London to Bury St. Edmunds Willcocks 3, xxx Rated 'A-B'. Bury St. Edmunds via Chelmsford, Halstead, Sudbury and Long Melford. The charge was 7d, inland Bishop Mark 7OC. Writers seal, a Stag's head, is still intact on the letter. 16 1771 EL Bodney to Bury St. Edmunds Willcocks 411, xxx Rated 'D'. "THETFORD" (R.L. Type 38. Cat. NK 411. Type 4. 1750-1773). Postage 2d., for the two stages to Bury. The letter would have been sent by carrier by arrangement with the Postmaster at Thetford. "Additional with a dish", was a reminder to the carrier that he had to deliver a dish with the letter to comply with the Regulation "General Carriers Letter". 17 1766 EL Sibton to London Willcocks 295, xx Rated 'F', xxx Bishop 'A-B'. Taken to Peasenhall for the Saxmundham route. Stamped at Saxmundham, straight line town stamp, London via Ipswich. Double-line Town stamp spelt TEWXBURY. The charge of 4d. to London has been "m/s" 7d for conveyance to Suffolk. Inland Bishop Mark 8 SE. Directed by the writer "to goe by Boxford bagg, by way of London". 26 1767 EL Bury St. Edmunds to Bruges Willcocks 30, xxx Rated 'B'. Paid 3d. to London and 6d. to Flanders. The Inland London Bishop Mark is 1JY. Larger type mark with the day in the top section. Also General Post paid in red. 27 18th Century EL Bruges to Bodney xxx Bruges Straight Line, xxx Bishop Mark. Mis-sent to Dublin, Ireland. Sent to London "m/s" 7d., then 1 N 1, illustrating the shortened AND. The charge being 7d., Inland Bishop Mark 13 OC. 30 1712 EL London to Stoke Willcocks 2, xx Rated 'C'. Inland Bishop Mark AU 30 (month above day, in use 1661 to 1713). The charge was 7d. "By Boxford Bagg" and "to be left at Beaumonts in Stoke". At this time a Michael Beaumont kept a house called the "Club Room" in Stoke. 31 1787 Front Halesworth to Aylsham xx Rated 'F'. Scarce.
