who formed one of <strong>the</strong> most extensive collections of postal his<strong>to</strong>ry and postcards in more<br />
than 200 volumes. To describe such quality is a real pleasure and I am sure that readers will<br />
find items of interest among <strong>the</strong> many thousands in this <strong>catalogue</strong>.<br />

Disinfected stain. Note <strong>the</strong> unique address and <strong>the</strong> writers comments "with care".<br />
2 1712 EL Boxford <strong>to</strong> S<strong>to</strong>ke with Bishop Mark month above date. Willcocks 2, xxx Rated 'C'. Directed by<br />
'Boxford Bagg' etc. Etc. "<strong>to</strong> be left at Beaumonts in S<strong>to</strong>ke". A house called "Club Room" was kept by a<br />
Michael Beaumont at this period. The charge was 7d.<br />
3 1720 EL London <strong>to</strong> Polsted Hall with Bishop Mark Willcocks 3, xxx Rated 'C'. The letter was written<br />
and posted on <strong>the</strong> 20th April 1720. It went through a London receiving office where it was stamped with<br />
<strong>the</strong> receivers initial "K", and <strong>the</strong> Inland Bishop Mark for 26 AP. The charge <strong>to</strong> Suffolk was 7d. The "K"<br />
initial has not been recorded.<br />
4 1727 EL Sheffield <strong>to</strong> Polsted Hall with Bishop Mark. Willcocks 3, xxx Rated 'B'. Written at<br />
Sheffield, Hants on <strong>the</strong> 4th January 1727 and directed "<strong>to</strong> goe by way of London please with care".<br />
The postage <strong>to</strong> London was 4d, <strong>the</strong>n "m/s" 7d at London. Bishop Mark is 30 JA, making it 26 days<br />
before conveyance <strong>to</strong> Suffolk. The reason for delay could have been plague, as <strong>the</strong> letter appears <strong>to</strong><br />
have been disinfected with sulphur and vinegar.<br />
5 1733 EL London <strong>to</strong> Polsted Hall with Bishop Mark Willcocks 3, xx Rated 'B'. Charged 4d. To<br />
London, where it was "m/s" 7d., and back stamped with a Inland Bishop Mark 9JA. Directed "<strong>to</strong><br />
goe by <strong>the</strong> way of London with care and speed". Back has a straight line <strong>to</strong>wn-stamp that is not<br />
clear. The letter deals with accounts and families since 1654.<br />
6 1734 EL London <strong>to</strong> Polsted Hall Willcocks 3/362, xxx Rated 'B', xxx Rated 'F' (Westminster). Conveyed<br />
through London from Westminster on a Saturday. London Penny Post and a 21 SE Inland Bishop Mark.<br />
7 1740 EL London <strong>to</strong> Polsted Hall Willcocks 3, xxx Rated 'B'. London, through Colchester <strong>to</strong> Stratford St.<br />
Mary, where a branch road leads <strong>to</strong> S<strong>to</strong>ke-by-Nayland, on <strong>the</strong> Boxford route. Bishop Mark 21 FE. The<br />
charge was 7d.<br />
8 1743 EL Ipswich <strong>to</strong> Norwich Willcocks 181, xx Rated 'G'. Very scarce. Two line Ipswich IPS/WICH.<br />
To "go by way of Yarmouth".<br />
9 1764 EL Woolpit <strong>to</strong> Bruges Willcocks 184, xx Rated 'E', xxxx Bishop Rated 'D'. SL Ipswich. Writer<br />
says "send my letters <strong>to</strong> Mr. Brook at S<strong>to</strong>wmarket". Mr. Brook was Postmaster during <strong>the</strong> 18th Century<br />
and S<strong>to</strong>wmarket was <strong>the</strong> nearest post office for London mail. A walking post went daily <strong>to</strong> and from<br />
Ipswich, 3d paid <strong>to</strong> London, 12th January inland stamp and General Post Paid in red were added.<br />
10 1767 EL Bury St. Edmunds <strong>to</strong> Bruges Willcocks 76, xx Rated 'F', xxx Post Paid in red Rated 'C', xxx<br />
Bishop Mark rated 'B'. Post paid 3d with Bury <strong>to</strong>wn stamp and General Post Paid and 12FE inland Bishop<br />

Straight Line. Charge of 6d., <strong>to</strong> London where it was "m/s" 1N1, which illustrates <strong>the</strong> shortened<br />
AND between <strong>the</strong> shilling and penny. Straight line BRUGES and with foreign and inland Bishop<br />
marks.<br />
13 1770 EL Bruges <strong>to</strong> S<strong>to</strong>wmarket Willcocks/002, xxxx F/B with Bishop Marks Rated 'B'. This letter<br />
illustrates how mailmen were responsible for <strong>the</strong> / between shillings and pence. Originally <strong>the</strong> full word<br />
AND was used. Gradually <strong>the</strong> A and D were left out, and <strong>the</strong> letter shows <strong>the</strong> N alone used, this <strong>to</strong>o was<br />
shortened <strong>to</strong> / for swiftness. Bears <strong>the</strong> foreign branch Bishop Mark, day OC 17, with <strong>the</strong> inland mark day<br />
above <strong>the</strong> month 17 OC.<br />
14 1771 EL Prescot (Lancs) <strong>to</strong> Bodney (Norfolk) Willcocks 806/76, xxx Bury Rated 'F', xxx Prescot<br />
Rated 'E'. Scarce. Taken <strong>to</strong> BURY for London. "m/s" 8d. For conveying <strong>to</strong> Haughley, Suffolk,<br />
redirected <strong>to</strong> Bodney, Norfolk. Bears Prescot, Bury and Bishop Marks.<br />
15 1777 EL London <strong>to</strong> Bury St. Edmunds Willcocks 3, xxx Rated 'A-B'. Bury St. Edmunds via<br />
Chelmsford, Halstead, Sudbury and Long Melford. The charge was 7d, inland Bishop Mark 7OC. Writers<br />
seal, a Stag's head, is still intact on <strong>the</strong> letter.<br />
16 1771 EL Bodney <strong>to</strong> Bury St. Edmunds Willcocks 411, xxx Rated 'D'. "THETFORD" (R.L. Type 38.<br />
Cat. NK 411. Type 4. 1750-1773). Postage 2d., for <strong>the</strong> two stages <strong>to</strong> Bury. The letter would have been<br />
sent by carrier by arrangement with <strong>the</strong> Postmaster at Thetford. "Additional with a dish", was a reminder<br />
<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> carrier that he had <strong>to</strong> deliver a dish with <strong>the</strong> letter <strong>to</strong> comply with <strong>the</strong> Regulation "General Carriers<br />
Letter".<br />
17 1766 EL Sib<strong>to</strong>n <strong>to</strong> London Willcocks 295, xx Rated 'F', xxx Bishop 'A-B'. Taken <strong>to</strong> Peasenhall for <strong>the</strong><br />

662 Ipswich - Military - A rare postcard of <strong>the</strong> Cyclist Company of <strong>the</strong> 1st Volunteer Battalion Suffolk<br />
Regiment. The place id <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>p of Burling<strong>to</strong>n Road and <strong>the</strong> sign of Daniels <strong>the</strong> Piano-man on Norwich<br />
Road can just been seen. The men are thought <strong>to</strong> be of <strong>the</strong> Cyclist Company of <strong>the</strong> 1st Volunteer Battalion<br />
of <strong>the</strong> Suffolk Regiment. In 1906 <strong>the</strong>ir uniform was green, <strong>the</strong> young fellows are thought <strong>to</strong> be new<br />
recruits. The Company was a popular one and in 1909 was a Terri<strong>to</strong>rial one known as <strong>the</strong> Essex and<br />
Suffolk Cyclists, with H.Q., at 15 Cornhill Ipswich.<br />
