ENHANCING THE GLOBAL ECONOMIC ROLE OF THE ASIA-PACIFIC REGION
Driven by, among others, the tremendous expansion of regional production networks, the recovery of
Japan, and the rise of China and India as global economic players, the Asia-Pacific region is seeing increased
investment in infrastructure and corporate expansion, as well as growing consumer needs and household
wealth in emerging Asian markets. As a result, the region has regained its dynamism since the 1997 financial
crisis, and is now poised to take on a greater role in the global economy. The Conference hopes to take a
look at the current macroeconomic challenges in the region, the risks and opportunities faced by the Asian
business community as a result of these challenges, and the strategies that businessmen may adopt to take
advantage of the emerging opportunities by leveraging on the strength of the region’s economies.
I
HARVEY CHANG
President, CACCI
that will take place on 22-23 October 2008 in Manila.
Let us all take advantage of this valuable oppor tunity to come together for our annual
gathering and to discuss issues of common concern to the business community. The
the risks and oppor tunities faced by Asian economies. We would cer tainly like to hear your
market.
I am also pleased to inform you that this year ’s event coincides with the Philippine Business Conference
(PBC), which is considered the biggest annual gathering of local businessmen in the countr y. Organized by
the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industr y (PCCI), the PBC will provide the local delegates from other
regions of the Philippines to attend the CACCI Conference and network with other CACCI members, providing
more oppor tunity for greater interac tion.
I therefore hope to join the PCCI in welcoming you all in Manila in O c tober. With your presence and ac tive
par ticipation in this year ’s Conference, I am confident we can fur ther strengthen CACCI’s role as an effec tive
vehicle for promoting the interest of the region’s business community.
I
JEFFREY L. S. KOO
Honorar y President, CACCI
t is indeed a great honor and privilege for the Philippine Chamber of Commerce
and Industr y (PCCI) to host this year ’s 22nd Conference of the Confederation of
Asia Pacific Chambers of Commerce and Industr y (CACCI).
This year ’s conference theme, “Enhancing the Global Economic Role of the Asia Pacific
Region” depic ts the strengths and potentials of the region and the developing economies
surrounding it in bringing them in the pace of globalization. With the rise of China, India,
V ietnam and with the emerging economies of Uzbek istan, G eorgia and Mongolia, Asia Pacific
is setting a significant impac t and challenge on other developed regions of the US and
Europe. Due to the increasing number of industr y players competing in this globalization age, Asia Pacific is
set to play an impor tant role in accelerating trade and investments and in strategizing an economic boom in
this par t of the world.
Today, we are faced with challenges, oppor tunities and risks as this new global order has taken a big role in
leveraging the impac t of economic integration and regional expansion.
Amidst the challenges of international and regional development, Asia Pacific has balanced the growing
demands of the economy vis-à-vis the presence of available technology resources, human sk ills, capability
management, among others. In this year ’s conference, we shall highlight the impac t of these challenges and
find a common ground to build par tnerships through public-private sec tor initiatives. I t is believed to be an
effec tive mechanism to achieve economic dynamism among nations in the region.
I t is now time for CACCI to re-position itself and emphasize its pioneering role in the economic advancement
of the region, advocating issues of common interest and benefit to the businessmen of its member countries.
For for t y years, CACCI has created a strength and charac ter of its own, synergizing with other multilateral
organizations and continuously bridging the gap among countries. An organization composed of twent y-
four countries is ver y strong enough to put into one single voice and collec tive ac tion the vision for a more
aggressive and dynamic Asia.
We warmly welcome you to Manila and let us all work together towards a more meaningful aspirations for
CACCI.
Macro Economic Challenges in the
Region: Risks and Opportunities
This session focuses on analyzing the implications of the current
global and regional macroeconomic situation for the region’s
business sector, against the backdrop of growing regional
economic integration, the continuing stall in the Doha Round;
persistent global trade imbalances; and concerns about the
impact of US sub-prime market turmoil on Asian economies The
session will also look at the development of key emerging Asian
markets such as China, India and Vietnam, the new opportunities
arising in these economies for business enterprises, and the
prospects for the region’s continued economic growth.
Conference Program
11:00-12:00 Plenary Session Two:
Sustaining Asia-Pacific Economic
Dynamism Through Public-Private
Partnerships
Public-private partnerships can help governments build capacity,
and acquire and maintain assets amidst shrinking or diminished
budgets that make public sector investment difficult. They also
allow private companies to gain new business opportunities,
share risks with their public partners, and enhance the social and
economic environment in which they operate. This Session will
examine how, through public-private partnerships, all parties
concerned contribute to the creation of a more stable and
improved environment that offers benefits to participants and
the economy and society at large.
12:00-14:00 Lunch
Luncheon Speech : Global Warming:
Issues and Challenges
Many experts agree that global warming is an urgent problem
that requires action now. This Session will feature a speaker who
will provide his insights on some of the effects of climate change;
what governments, companies, international institutions, and
other organizations are attempting to do about this issue as well
as the challenges they face; and what are some of the potential
solutions.
14:00-15:00 Plenary Session Three:
Digital Convergence in Asia: Its Role
in Regional Growth
Digital convergence is rapidly changing paradigms of industry
and competition. The convergence trend is supported by two
market forces – the demand pull of users and the technology
push of innovative companies. Companies that are able to
read the changing code of value creation and competition and
exploit it are likely to enjoy enough profitability as first movers;
while companies without forward-looking response will lose
much more than before, as followers. This Session will identify
strategies that companies interested in convergence trend may
wish to adopt to remain profitable.
