Psalm 23
Walking through the Valley of the Shadow
(Psalm 23:4)
C. S. Lewis: “God whispers to us in our pleasures, but shouts to us in our pains: Pain is
God’s megaphone to rouse a deaf world... Suffering … drives us out of the nursery to
help others.”
Psalm 23:4: “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will
fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
I. We walk through the valley of the shadow.
Job 10:18-19: “Why then did you bring me out of the womb? I wish I had died
before any eye saw me. If only I had never come into being, or had been
carried straight from the womb to the grave!”
Psalm 6:6: “I am worn out from groaning; all night long I flood my bed with
weeping and drench my couch with tears.”
Job 10:22: The valley of the shadow is “the land of deepest night, of deep
shadow and disorder, where even the light is like darkness.”
God offers us
in the valley.
II. God is with us in the valley.
Psalm 23:4: “I will fear no evil, for you are with me.”
Hebrews 13:5: “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”
Jesus walked through the path of
. Jesus suffered pain at every level of
his being.
Jesus is with
in the valley of the shadow. We have nothing to fear. God
is with us.
Our Shepherd God
Psalm 23
“Walking through the Valley of the Shadow” - continued
III. God us in the valley.
Psalm 23:4: “Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
The Lord
us with his club-like rod.
The Lord
us with his staff.
The Lord’s rod and staff, his protecting and guiding
, comfort us.
David uses a unique term to describe the shepherd’s staff. The root of the word means
“to lean on or
completely.” When we are in trouble, we can lean on the
Lord. We can trust him completely.
