Editorial
India is expected to be the most populous country by 2025, and
has to feed a population of over 1.6 billion. At present the Indian
economy is booming at around 8% to 9% growth annually. One of the
strengths considered for such an economic growth is the large pool
of skilled manpower. The rising per-capita income and the need for
health security of the nation, along with the growing investments in
healthcare, the scientific management of healthcare facilities attains
pre-eminence for confident and sustainable growth of health sector.
The role of healthcare managers and administrators increases
tremendously in the near future, in both the public and private sectors,
to ensure effective and efficient healthcare delivery systems, for our
billion plus population to contribute and maintain a sustained economic
growth.
The Indian health and medical services have to be more
economical, so as to make them easily available, accessible and
affordable. This responsibility is partially, if not entirely, with the
healthcare management and administration at the national, as well as
the institutional and the individual level. I hope this journal will be the
beacon for all professionals involved in healthcare delivery for scientific
research and evidence based management of healthcare facilities.
Book Review
HOSPITAL ADMINISTRATION AND HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
Reviewer : S. Satpathy*
Authors : D K Sharma, R C Goyal
Publisher : PHI Learning Pvt. Ltd. New Delhi
Publication : 5th Edition
Pages : 557
Price : Rs. 375/-
ISBN No. : 978-81-203-3987-3
It is often said that hospitals are not merely the product
of bricks and mortar, and high technology, but the human
resources which deliver health care to patients. Being
extremely complex matrix organizations, the proper
management of human resources in a modern hospital
is one of the most challenging tasks facing the hospital
administrator today. The practice of medicine has
traditionally banked upon individualistic traits and has
heen essentially physician driven with emphasis on one
to one doctor-patient communication, without much
emphasis on ‘‘teamwork’’ and reliance on ‘‘systems’’.
The authors Dr. D.K. Sharma and Dr. R.C. Goyal bring
their enormous and rich experience spanning both the
public and private sector hospitals for more than 2
decades.
Although there are quite a few books on this discipline,
very few of them address the core area of human resource
management so extensively. Being the fifth edition, the
authors have added two new contemporary chapters viz.
Adiministrative steps required to be taken in establishing
a new hospital (chapter 5) and the statutory issue of
Bio-medical waste management in hospitals (chapter
25) both of which will be extremely useful not only to
administrators, but also to students and academicians.
This edition contains twenty six chapters along with
seven appendices relating to legal issues in
administration of hospitals with case discussions,
judgements which would be very handy to hospital
administrators.
The first four chapters (1-4) provide a glimpse into the
historical aspects of hospitals in India and the journey of
health sector through the years in successive 5 year
plans with an overview of hospital administration.
Chapters 6-21 discuss about the methods of organizing
hospital personnel department, though modern
management techniques in a scientific manner with
model forms. Subsequently, chapters 22-24 deal with
management related issues, and the last chapter focuses
on legal issues. The only weakness of book is lack of
diagrams, flowcharts, tables, figures which would have
helped in breaking the monotony of the text and adding
more appeal to readers.
Overall, the book is written in a lucid manner and is easy
to understand. It will be useful for Health/Hospital
administrators, clinicians/nurses holding administrative
charges and students of hospital management.
