UNION UNIVERSITY Season Outlook / Summary
• 2 0 0 6 S e a s o n O u t l o o k •
After posting the best season in the eight-year history of the Union University men’s soccer program, the Bulldogs look to do even more in
2006. Union returns all but one starter from last season’s team that finished just one game away from the NAIA National Tournament. Several
new additions fill out the roster, however, none more important than the new head coach for the Bulldogs, Clovis Simas.
Simas has 18 returning players on the varsity team this year, with seven of those players being seniors. Each
of the seven seniors on the 2006 roster started at some point last season. Ten newcomers dot this very experienced
roster. All of these players will have the opportunity to contribute to the varsity squad, however some
will be mainly used to lead the way on the junior varsity team.
The senior class boast seven players that have contributed greatly to the recent success of this young program.
Gareth Munro returns as Union’s leading scorer last season with 10 goals, including three game winners. Duncan
Nicol, Craig Clark, Mark Forrest, Kirk Childers, Marko Pavlovic, and Christopher Prentice will each bring
their experience and leadership to each match this season.
Six juniors join the seniors as a very experienced group with plenty of matches under their belt. Of these six
players, all have started at some point during their Union careers. NAIA All-American, All-Region, and All-Conference
Benny Crozier brings he team-high 11 assists from a year ago back to the table this season. Chris
Lean replaces Union’s only lost starter from last season at the goalie position, however, Lean has plenty of
experience over his career with numerous starts. Colin Bonner, Scott Sinclair, Kyle Sanders, and Bobby Mc-
Coll complete a group of 13 junior and seniors which will fill out the majority of
the starting rolls this year.
The smallest class on this roster is the group of five sophomores. Wagner
Oliveira, Matthew Lynn, and Inacio Oliveira played a combined 30 varsity matches
last season with Wagner Oliveira recording four goals. Kenny Shelton and Daniel Cathey played junior
varsity last season but have the opportunity to contribute and learn from this very experienced varsity squad.
Ten freshman have earned a spot on the varsity roster in hopes of gaining playing time this season. Tyler
Newman, Bradley Ward, Rabo Garba, Brendon Kuhlman, Paul Turner, Alessandro Oliveira, Leopold Psongo,
Isaac Choy, Hanahiah Nyabam, and Marcos Matos will help fill some voids on the varsity squad, with some
gaining experience on the junior varsity squad.
The junior varsity squad is made up of 12 players with four sophomores leading the way. Andy Walker, Dustin
Colbey, Brian Jones, and Michael Lee each return after playing junior varsity last season. Freshmen Justin
Williamson, Alex Ayris, Tim Cox, Ben Trail, Matt Lautensack, Lucas Neufeld, John Hawley and redshirt player
Robert Hamilton will attempt to earn their time as they begin their careers in the Union program.
This team, full of upperclassmen with experience, is ready to make one last run at an NAIA National Tournament.
Last season left a hunger that hasn’t been quenched yet. And these player know one more win will get
them to where they want to be.
Union University finished their eighth season of varsity competition with a 13-3-1 overall record and a 3-1-1 conference record. Union started
the season with a seven game winning streak that was ended by conference foe Cumberland University. Over the duration of the 2005 season,
Union never lost more that one match in a row.
The Bulldogs placed second in the TranSouth Conference Regular Season. They made their
sixth TranSouth Conference Tournament appearance as the No. 2 seed. In the first round
the Bulldogs topped Martin Methodist College to advance to the championship game, where
they lost to Cumberland University for the second time on the year to finish runner-up in the
tournament. However, Union was able to advance to their second
straight NAIA Region XI tournament because of their high region
ranking. Union was forced to open play versus their TranSouth rival
Cumberland, but Union would finally top Cumbelrand for the first time
in three season chances. This win, made history for Union as they
advanced to the NAIA Region XI Tournament championship match.
This was the longest that any Union men’s soccer team had stayed
alive in NAIA postseason play. The Bulldogs lost the region title
match to the eventual NAIA National Championions, Lindsey Wilson.
Union also earned several individual honors during the 2005 season.
Junior Gareth Munro of Scotland was named to the TranSouth
All-Conference Team. Sophomore Benny Crozier of Scotland was
named to the TranSouth All-Conference Team and the NAIA All-Region Team. Head Coach Dr. Darin White was
named the NSCAA/adidas NAIA South Region Coach of the Year. During the season, Union’s Munro recorded a
hat trick in a 6-0 win over Campbellsville. This feat helped earn him the TranSouth Conference and NAIA Region
XI Player of the Week honors.
In addition to the on the field success of the 2005 men’s soccer team, the Bulldogs also were awarded with the
very prestegious Buffalo Funds Five Star Award for their dedication and implementation of the five character values
(Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Servant Leadership, and Sportsmanship) on and off the soccer field.
UNION UNIVERSITY Athletic Progress
Union dedicates Fesmire Field House
Union University dedicated the new Fesmire Field House
“to the glory of God and the good of this university,” Union
President David S. Dockery said Aug. 5 at the dedication
ceremony.
“I know that you join me in giving thanks for the beauty of
this facility and what it will to do to enhance the excellence
in our athletic department,” Dockery said. “This certainly is
a first-class facility that can compete with any in the nation.
We’re so thankful for those who have made it possible.”
The building is named in honor of Benny and Norma Fesmire, the
lead donors for the project.
“Since the day I walked on this campus, the Fesmires have been
characterized by support and encouragement of all that we do
at this university,” Dockery said. “Particularly they have invested
themselves in the work of our athletic department. They have
been so important to who we are and what we do.”
Other primary benefactors include the Union University Booster
Club, West Tennessee Bone and Joint Clinic, Graham Snack
Foods, James Wilson, Dan and Brenda Davidson, Bruce and
Melody Haltom and MG Construction Co.
TLM Associates designed the 18,000-square foot building, while
MG Construction Co. built the facility.
The field house will support the soccer teams, the men’s baseball
team and the women’s softball team. It includes a 9,374-square
foot turf room,
locker rooms and showers for each home and visiting
team, coaches offices and an athletic training room.
David Blackstock, Union’s athletic director, said only
one or two other colleges of Union’s size in the South
have comparable facilities to the Fesmire Field House.
“This places us above most NCAA Division II schools
and right up there with some of the larger NCAA
Division I schools,” Blackstock said. “This definitely
should help us in attracting good athletes and
maintaining an excellent program, as well as improving
in many areas.”
UNION UNIVERSITY NAIA & Opponent Info.
NAIA - National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics
Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of
intercollegiate sports. Since its introduction of intercollegiate championship basketball in
1937, the NAIA has maintained the highest standards while administering first-rate athletics
programs.
With its major emphasis on educational development, it was natural for the NAIA to
strengthen academic eligibility requirements. All NAIA participating student-athletes
must maintain a certain grade-point-average (GPA) while accumulating credit hours for
a declared academic degree. Unlike other associations, NAIA student-athlete academic
eligibility is monitored on a semester-by-semester basis.
The NAIA includes more than 60,000 participating student-athletes. The NAIA offers 24
separate championships in 13 sports including baseball, basketball, cross country, golf,
football, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, soccer, softball, swimming and
diving, tennis, volleyball, and wrestling.
NAIA Champions of Character
The National Association of Intercollegiate
Athletics (NAIA) Champions of Character
program is designed to instill an
understanding of character values in sport
and provide practical tools for studentathletes,
coaches and parents to use in
modeling exemplary character traits.
Launched by the
NAIA in 2000,
the Champions
of Character
program addresses
character
issues more
comprehensively
than any other
national program
for youth. The
program currently reaches hundreds of
thousands of students on nearly 300
college and university campuses in
North America and extends into their
surrounding communities.
The NAIA Champions of Character
program is an educational outreach
initiative which emphasizes the tenets
of character and integrity, not only for
NAIA college students, but for younger
students, coaches and parents in our
communities.
Coaches, parents, administrators and
community partners all have a role in
developing students of character. The
NAIA Champions of Character program
brings them training, guidelines and
behavior models to create positive
environments that promote personal
growth and fun sport activity.
Champions of Character is a program of
the NAIA designed to promote character
development in youth and change the
culture of sport.
The NAIA developed the Champions
of Character program in response to
the growing problem of deteriorating
standards of integrity in sports and
society. At a time when all of sport has
experienced increasingly abhorrent
behavior by athletes, coaches, fans and
parents, NAIA Champions of Character
raises the standards for positive youth
development in athletics and academics.
The NAIA has been informally teaching
character development through athletics
for decades. Now our core values of
respect, responsibility, integrity, servant
leadership and sportsmanship are
addressed comprehensively in the
Champions of Character program.
The NAIA sees a tremendous need to
supplement character development in
younger students from the elementary
through high school level. Lessons on
character and integrity through sports are
a natural extension of classroom learning.
