Rotary Information Interplast - Repairing Bodies, Rebuilding lives
Rotary Interplast is one of Australia and New Zealand’s best kept secrets.
For nearly 30 years, Interplast has worked in 25 countries and implemented over 500 surgical and allied
health medical program activities across the Asia Pacific region. Provided free reconstructive surgery for
patients who would otherwise not be able to afford access to such services and empowered local medical
personnel by building their capacity to act independently. They have supported over 70 surgeons and nurses
to continue part of their training in Australia, sent over 600 volunteers on medical programs, provided
over 32,000 consultations and performed over 21,000 life-changing operations.
Siti Aisyah is an Interplast success story. .
When Siti was just 16 months old, her mother passed away, leaving her father to raise her with the help of
her aunt. At the age of two, she became ill with a fever and developed a blister rash on her face. Although
treated with a traditional sandalwood medicine by the village medicine man, Siti’s condition did not
improve. With very little money for treatment, her village rallied, over the period of a week, to raise
enough funds to transport her to Sumbawa Besar hospital. After travelling 150 kilometres over the mountains,
Siti was finally diagnosed with a noma, an infection caused by bacteria which leads to destruction of
the flesh. She was lucky to be alive. Siti’s condition improved after receiving antibiotic treatment.
However, she paid a significant price. She lost a substantial portion of her upper lip and cheek and, as a
result, experienced extreme difficulties with drinking and eating. Her nutritional intake was restricted to
soft food and she was forced to use a small spoon to feed herself. Siti’s impoverished childhood, coupled
with her early illness, meant she didn’t attend school until she was seven years of age. However, she
worked exceptionally hard and excelled. Constantly teased for her deformity, Siti first met Interplast in
2005 as a 16-year-old girl hidden behind a face cloth to disguise her defect. Funded by Batu Hijau Doctors
Children’s Fund, her first Interplast operation allowed Siti to eat normally for the first time in 14 years.
With an additional procedure in 2009, Siti is now a far cry from the shy, reclusive young girl. She’s a
confident, lipstick-wearing woman in pursuit of a successful nursing career. In May 2012, one of Interplast’s
regular volunteer nurses had the opportunity to catch up with Siti, much to her delight: She had
come all the way from Lombok and was dressed in her nurses uniform. She beamed confidence and was a
far cry from the girl who would hide behind her face washer
2011-2012 Wheelchairs for Kids Annual Report
Members of Wheelchairs for Kids Incorporated.
I am pleased to report that the year 2011-2012 was another satisfying year and despite the general economic
downturn our donated income of approximately ½ million dollars was an increase of 5% on the previous
year. This thanks to the great number of clubs, schools, business and private individuals donating and/or
raising funds. A special mention here of BankWest Movies by Burswood which was responsible for about
25% of our donated income.
The cost of materials for our rough terrain wheelchair, now built to World Health Organisation recommendations
and adjustable for all sizes of children, is still only $125, due in part to the generosity of some suppliers
and the firmness of our purchasing efforts. Peter Hoo playing a big part in this.
Last year the workshop produced and distributed 2,500 wheelchairs, which was a great effort considering
that the new wheelchair was being refined and modified following feedback and expert advice. Currently
we are producing 325 per month.
Brother Olly Pickett, who comes with compliments of the Christian Brothers along with a workshop vehicle,
Bob Sheridan and the team of technical progress members and with 125 volunteers, are to be congratulated
on what has developed into a very smooth and organised production facility. Our outworkers
throughout Australia knitting knee rugs and dolls also serve to promote the project, which is becoming well
known throughout the country. Through Rotary, a company in Melbourne is actively looking at redesigning
and possibly supplying plastic components free.
Most of this knowledge will of course be known, with the regular receipt of the magazine “The Drill”, so
expertly edited by Volunteer Bob Sheridan.
Our database of over 2,700 donors is growing, as is the work of receipting and acknowledging our donors,
so ably and consistently carried out by Susanne Whyte. Our bookkeeper, volunteer Peter Farrell, has
for years produced a set of accounts monthly, particularly needed for our GST refund claims and we thank
Guy Lehmann for carrying out the annual audit.
Although Movies by Burswood donated ¼ of our income for the past year, this wasn’t just a handout. Neil
Darch handled the mammoth task of organising that at least 2 volunteers attended every night during the
season. Volunteers from our workshop did a great job assisting in setting up and dismantling the venues.
There is no way I can name every helper as the number of people volunteering and often taking responsibility
is getting so great. A special thanks therefore goes to all these people.
For personal reasons, Jerry Pilcher has retired as chairman of our management committee which he ably
steered for a number of years. The position was temporarily filled by Dave Taggart and we look forward to
electing a new chairman today.
As we grow, it has become apparent that at some time in the future the administration will not be able to be
handled by volunteers. In fact a paid management will be required. This would conflict with our very successful
fund raising, where we so successfully promote that donations are not used for administration. We
would like to continue promoting this fact and our Secretary Peter Whyte has set up a separate Wheelchairs
for kids Foundation. This Foundation with the object of employing a fund raiser, who would be engaged
to approach mainly the corporate sector, would raise his or her own expenses and then contribute to
Wheelchairs for Kids.
The Scarborough Rotary Club, of which the members are automatically members of Wheelchairs for Kids,
has continued with its support by financing the bulk of the overheads. It is heard at times, the statement “It
is time that Wheelchairs for Kids stood on its own feet”. I ask why? It is the flagship of the Rotary Club
of Scarborough, is supported by 200 Rotary Clubs and very strongly in Victoria. Can you think of a better
way to spend your $30,000, which is at present being turned into over 3,000 much needed wheelchairs
with an estimated commercial value of over a million dollars? And, giving such a sense of purpose to so
many volunteers.
