Dear Parents/Guardians
As we draw to the end of another successful term, I would like to thank you for all the
support you have given us and emphasise some of the highlights of the term.
We received a letter from the Secretary of State for Schools, Nick Gibb, congratulating
us on our outstanding results and informing us we are now placed in the top 100
schools nationally.
We‟ve had an outstanding whole school production of the Wizard of Oz which played to
full houses most evenings – a massive thank you to all the staff and students for all their
efforts.
Thanks also to Miss Tetley and Mr Beasley for running the Barcelona trip, giving a
group of students the opportunity to immerse themselves into a different culture.
This Thursday sees the annual Senior Citizens Easter luncheon.
I would like to welcome 2 new members of staff after the Easter break: Mrs Gunn, our
replacement for Miss Sorensen, who comes with a wealth of experience; and
Daniel Bennett who is joining the ICT and Business faculty.
I wish you all a Happy Easter – we all return on Monday 16 April!
Brian Sarahan
Principal
Since October, the students at Humberston Academy have
been eagerly rehearsing for their production of The Wizard
Of Oz.
After the huge success of Bugsy Malone last year, it was a
hard act to follow, but the students did not disappoint the
full houses each of the four nights it was performed!
Miss Law, the director of the production was absolutely
amazed by the amount of students who turned up to be a
part of the show, and was so overwhelmed by the talent
that the show was double casted to allow for all students to
showcase their talents, and boy does this Academy have
talent!
Each cast performed two nights to packed houses and
were absolutely fantastic throughout the whole process of
rehearsals and performances, giving 110% every time!
Choreographed by Joanne Baker and with a band of
professional musicians, the show was a resounding
success.
Thank you to all involved who supported this fantastic
show!
In the table tennis this term, the U13 boys were runners up and the U16 boys were champions of their plate
competition. The U13 team members were: Jack Rodwell, Sam Tuttas, Kai Morris, Louis Rodwell,
Jacob Johnson, Josh Revell, Cholasit Kaewwichit and Oscar Goodhew. The U16 team members were
Jack Richardson, Oli Drant, Josh Winchester, Oli Franklin, Reece French, James Hansford and Glenn Watson.
The Y10 rugby team (left) have been competing in the newly formed central venue
rugby tournament. Every Thursday this term they have travelled to
Oasis Wintringham and played against all the other schools in the area. After the
penultimate week of competition they are currently sat in
third place.
The Y11 boys football team (right) beat
Oasis Academy Immingham in the semi-final of the cup
competition and will play Healing in the final on Thursday 19 April at the Bradley
pitches, 3pm KO. We wish them and Mr Wakefield good luck.
The Y9 boys (left) competed in the central venue Hockey
competition against 6 other schools. The competition allowed teams to have Y11
squad members. They played against some boys twice their size but competed well,
finishing a very credible fourth. Added to this Mr Kemshall entered them for the NE
Lincs Team of the Year 2011 due to their heroics in becoming the area Champions
and then going on to compete against other schools from the north of the country.
Unfortunately they did not win but were the runners-up.
The Y8 (B team) went to Tollbar and played in the G&D netball tournament They came 6th out of 10 teams,
winning against St Andrew‟s College, Cleethorpes Academy, Whitgift and more importantly drawing against a
very strong Tollbar team. All of the girls played amazingly and most of them had not yet played for the school.
Grace Hewitt had an amazing game, and was definitely my player of the tournament, but all the girls played
really well. Team: Melissa Peper (captain), Alex Gilmour, Olivia Walker, Ellie Hansford, Grace Hewitt,
Katie Boyington, Ellie Hulme and Stephanie Beardsley.
The Y8 girls have also attended 2 Central Venue League (CVL) Netball fixtures, held at Oasis Academy
Wintringham on indoor courts. Both times they finished high in their groups and gained some much needed
experience for future competitions. All of the girls are improving their technique with every game. The Y9 girls‟
netball squad have also attended CVL fixtures, showing a great standard of play and again gaining much
needed experience.
The girls‟ year 7, 8 and 9 football teams have all been unlucky with their football fixtures being cancelled due to
the poor weather.
Five of our girls that regularly go to our hockey practices
attended a training session at Oasis Academy Wintringham
with Crista Cullen from the 2012 Olympic Hockey Team, this
was a great opportunity for the girls to speak with her and get
her autograph.
The PE department held its first rewards trip at
Cleethorpes Bowling. This was for KS3 students (right) who
had shown a commitment to practices and representation
since September. We had over 50 students attend the event
which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The KS4 event will be
happening very soon.
In March four highly gifted Y10 students represented the Academy in a Further Mathematics Challenge held at
Ormiston Maritime Academy in which a number of local schools competed for a coveted place in the finals at
York University in April. In a tense and exciting competition which lasted almost three hours and covered areas
of Mathematics including problem solving, analytical thinking and the geometry of the earth, Jennifer Short,
Kristina Howes, Tom Butler and Frazer Smith worked competently and effectively to secure as many team
points as possible. Despite an early hiccup in the "True or False" round, the Y10s gradually pulled back and
with one round to go they actually took the lead by a one point advantage. The final round presented a series
of "relay" team problems in which all members relied totally on each other to succeed.
As the Challenge reached its conclusion, and the overall winners were announced, it was with great pride that
the Humberston team discovered they had reigned victorious on the day and would now go up against the
most gifted mathematicians in the North of England at the finals on 19 April at York University!
Academy students enjoyed a “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity to
debate in the House of Lords. The thirteen Y9 students took
part with three other schools from Christchurch, Ascot and
Wakefield. Ms Allenby-Moore, Mr Goodwin and Miss Dring
supervised the trip.
House of Lords
The topic of 'Was Social Media responsible for the August
riots?' proved to be a contentious one.
The party met Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for the
Department of Energy and Climate Change, Lord Marland.
The meeting had been arranged by our Academy sponsor
David Ross.
Lord Marland gave the students a tour of the Great Hall in the
Palace of Westminster and explained his role to the students. Ms Allenby-Moore said: “The whole day was
wonderful; it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience enjoyed by the staff and students.” Abbie Cheater (13) said:
“We all learned lots while we were there. We had all prepared speeches to read out to the Lords and
Baronesses. We had to decide if we were for or against the motion that Social Media was responsible for the
August riots.”
Those who argued it was not responsible won the debate, which took place in a committee room.
The Academy was chosen to take part in the debate as it is on the House of Lords‟ Peers in Schools
programme.
A select few youngsters (pictured left) from across North East
Lincolnshire have been chosen to become
Adistar Olympic Ambassadors for the area. They will be role
models for thousands of students in secondary and primary
schools in the area. Amongst those chosen are our students,
Matthew Blake, Elva-Kate Preston and Paris Colebrook.
One of the ideas from the group, to promote health and sport in
the run up to the 2012 Olympics, is for young people from the
area to carry their own Olympic torch through North East
Lincolnshire.
Nick Hanson, manager of School Sports Partnership, said that
the Ambassadors will provide more inspiration to other students than adults. They will host assemblies and coordinate
the schools' own Olympic Flame Procession which will link in with the official London 2012 Olympic
torch which will be carried through the area in June.
Each of the Ambassadors will receive their own uniform and have a chance of promotion to become
Gold Ambassadors, an honour Elva-Kate Preston has achieved already, or become Platinum Ambassadors.
Mr Hanson said they will promote respect and excellence in sport and encourage young people who are not
already involved in sports activities. They will also visit primary schools in the Borough to encourage
participation in sports from an early age.
Matthew Blake, 13, said: "It is a great way to promote activities and you meet new people all the time."
Elva-Kate said she was thrilled when she was invited to York to meet some Olympians including Shirley Webb,
the Scottish hammer record-holder and best-known as Battleaxe in The Gladiators. She also met fencer
Tommy Davis and swimmer Adrian Whitehead. Elva said "It was fascinating learning about their lives, the
stories of how they got involved in sports and their dedication to be the best."
Safer Internet day was held on 7 February, it focused on the issues of being an on-line Parent. CEOP released
“The Parents and Carers‟ Guide to the Internet” an entertaining, light-hearted look at what it takes to
be an on-line parent. We would encourage parents to watch it at home on thinkuknow.co.uk/parents and
Hello. My name is Andrew Green and even though I am only just turning fifteen, I
have my own business. Unfortunately, it is not trading yet because I have to
balance the business work with my school work, but it is incorporated and I do
have a Trade Mark. The company is called Lyke Ltd and it will sell software that I
have written. The company is internet based so the software will be
downloadable. I currently know two programming languages so the software will be available on both
Microsoft Windows and Apple Mac operating systems, but I am also going on to learn another which will
enable me to make my software available on the iOS (iDevices). I would certainly recommend learning a
programming language to anyone interested in IT. Knowing how to program gives you a whole new world of
endless possibilities and the more advanced you get the greater things you can achieve. Possibly one of the
biggest motivations I have to program is the likes of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates - two of the richest people in
the world. Although some credit should go to my Dad and Grandad as they were the ones who really got me
interested and intrigued with the programming side of computers. To be honest, I would only consider
myself to be an „average‟ or even a „newbie‟ programmer, but already I have been able to create commercial
quality software. Best of all, I have taught myself everything I know, for free - all you need is an internet
connection.
As I have Type 1 Diabetes, I decided to volunteer and put my skills to a good use to make
diabetesuknelfsg.org.uk Yes, this is a long web address but the group I‟ve made it on behalf of, is called
Diabetes UK North East Lincolnshire Family Support Group. The website helps to continue the support the
group offers, which is generally advice and support. It features an online community (a forum) and a live
chat facility - the website is also fully mobile compatible. The group also does a lot of fundraising for
diabetes and sometimes we use the funds to subsidise diabetes days out - photos from which are available
in our on-line gallery. It is free for anybody in the UK to join and make posts on the forum - but we are mainly
looking for members who live with diabetes. If you have any diabetes-related queries, please be sure to visit
the website. You can read more information on the „About‟ page and I am always updating it.
Note from Miss Johnson (Assistant Principal) - The website Andrew has created is considered to be so good
that Diabetes UK are looking into employing him to be the administrator. Well done Andrew.
