Chairman’s Report
Index
Interestingly, the results are a clear demonstration
of the high level of competitiveness, year after
year, at the Six Nations Wine Challenge.
And 2014 will be marked by surprises, something
that should be very welcome by global consumers,
because it would help them to open their minds and
palates. A South African Sauvignon Blanc over New
Zealand´s or a Chilean Riesling highlights some of
Australia’s best representatives. Somewhat more
surprising is an Aussie Malbec chosen over many
from Argentina. And there is revenge at the hands
of Argentina’s Syrah. The United States has taken
one of the most competitive classes of the show;
Bordeaux Blends, and New Zealand has dominated
the Chardonnay class.
The contribution of the Six Nations Wine Challenge
to the development of the wine in the New
World regions is surprising. To bring us back to
the Challenge it´s enough for the judges just to
see the enthusiasm from participating wineries
and their anxiety to know the results, and also
the consumers’ response when tastings and
presentations are carried out in different countries.
I congratulate this year’s winners and I look forward
to 2015 which will be the 13th year of this important
Challenge.
Each year it becomes more difficult to select
because the qualities are very close, and
the typicity of terroirs and styles tend
to be a more subjective assessment,
especially in these blind tastings of
almost 600 wines.
Class 11 - Shiraz 14
Class 12 - Cabernet Sauvignon 15
Class 14 - Other Red Varietals 16
Class 15 - Bordeaux Blends 17
Class 16 - Red Blends (Non Bordeaux) 18
However, it is still very entertaining
and interesting to taste all the wines
in the Challenge when judges from
each country choose their top wines
regardless of commercial quantity
available. It is during the judges’ discussions
and exchanges of views with other references
in all classes, where we learn more, and so can
better communicate to our consumers.
The Six Nations Wine Challenge Chairman’s position
rotates each year. Fabricio Portelli of Argentina took
the reins this year and they have now been handed
over to Chile’s Eduardo Brethauer for 2015.
Joint Wine of Show
Silverthorn
The Green Man
Sparkling Blanc
de Blancs 2011
Winemaker John Loubser
Silverthorn is the Loubsers’ very small 10 hectares
farm out in Robertson 200Km from Cape Town. They
began their wine making venture exactly 10 years ago
with the aim to specialise in Methode Cap Classique
only. Robertson is a region well known for excellent
Chardonnays and they are fortunate enough to have
rocky, very lime-rich, soil and this was one of the
determining factors for them to produce a Blanc de
Blancs. The grapes for the Green Man were whole
bunch pressed with a very low recovery rate of
only 600 liters per ton – this ensures that no bitter
tannins are extracted. Fermentation took place in a
stainless steel tank at 15 degrees Celsius and a small
portion was barrel fermented to enhance complexity.
Secondary fermentation occurred in the bottle and the
wine spent 30 months on the lees after which it was
manually riddled and disgorged. Total production of
this wine is 7000 bottles.
THE CLASS AS A WHOLE
An amazing range of balanced Sparkling wines made
in different styles. The freshness and the tiny firm
bubbles are in all of them.
THE TROPHY WINNER
It’s a pretentious wine, with serious balance, firm
bubbles and a lively long finish, toasty and lightly
floral notes. A very elegant wine.
Winery Concha y Toro.
Region Maipo Valley, Chile.
Winemaker Ignacio Recabarren
Chilean Judge Eduardo Brethauer comments.
THE CLASS AS A WHOLE
A short but diverse class. From very peppery Merlot
origination in the coastal valleys to ripe and velvety
Carmenère from the central valley of Chile.
Many overripe Merlots and not a few from Carmenère.
A class of deep contrasts.
Winemaker Ignacio Recabarren
THE TROPHY WINNER
A very deep and velvety Carmenere. Aromas of red
cherries, nose pepper and graphite. Rich and powerful,
yet extremely elegant. An excellent example of the
variety to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of its
rediscovery in Chile.
Winery Bleasdale Vineyards
Region Langhorne Creek, Australia
Winemaker Paul Hotker
Chilean Judge Eduardo Brethauer comments.
THE CLASS AS A WHOLE
This class was dominated by the straight, sweet and
juicy fruit. Although there were some very elegant wines,
a few of them were over extracted. Monothematic
Malbec deserves more diversity, freshness and
excitement.
THE TROPHY WINNER
The winner was a very peppery style of Malbec.
Aromas of plums, black cherries, perfume of violet and
a mysterious smokey touch. Juicy, well-balanced and
structured.
Australian Judge Huon Hooke comments.
THE CLASS AS A WHOLE
A very good class, although the best half were well
ahead of the second half. The more elegant mediumbodied
wines were equally appreciated as the big
wines.
THE TROPHY WINNER
A very impressive Syrah which combines some of the
spicier aroma spectrum with unequivocally full body
and great depth of lush fruit flavour. A truly great
Syrah which was the clear winner.
FOOD MATCH
Winery Stark-Condé Wines
Region Stellenbosch, South Africa
Winemaker José Conde
Australian Judge Huon Hooke comments.
THE CLASS AS A WHOLE
A class of varied style and quality; the panel felt too
many wines were either too astringent or over-oaked.
The top wines were superb, though, and there were
plenty of highlights.
Winemaker José Conde
THE TROPHY WINNER
A classic varietal Cabernet, clean and beautifully
formed, showing spot-on ripeness of blackberry and
dark cherry flavours, good balance and well-managed
tannins. It could drink relatively young, but should also
live well - for at least 20 years.
Australian Judge Huon Hooke comments.
THE CLASS AS A WHOLE
A diverse class, as expected, but what was interesting
was the top awards were spread evenly over 10 grape
varieties. If anything, Petit Verdot and Grenache
performed best, also Cabernet Franc.
THE TROPHY WINNER
Great colour, deep and bright and youthful. The
bouquet and palate loaded with blackberry/cassis
flavours of freshness and charm. A big but beautifully
balanced wine.
Winemaker Margo Van Staaveren
South African Judge Michael Fridjhon comments.
THE CLASS AS A WHOLE
An aesthetically coherent class, with focus, intensity
and sophistication. A few wines were overly simple,
and some showed obvious Brettanomyces (non-spore
forming genus of yeast). That said, fruit, balance and
concentration were the hallmarks of the class.
THE TROPHY WINNER
This wine is intensely fruited with a plush yet fresh
mouth feel. Beautiful mid-palate textures, well managed
tannins, intricate spice, nuance and length.
THE CLASS AS A WHOLE
A very interesting class to judge with so many
contrasting blends from a wide variety of regions.
Both elegant and blockbuster styles competed for
attention with the winners offering complexity,
density and length.
THE TROPHY WINNER
THE CLASS AS A WHOLE
It showed a high diversity of styles and wines. All
of them could be a dessert in itself. So, the flavours,
complexity and freshness are there to be enjoyed.
THE TROPHY WINNER
The freshness and the balance made the difference
for this wine, with potential ageing it will gain more
complexity. Very nice drinking on its own or with a
