“Nassau Fellows” Program Launched
Nassau Church has created a new mission opportunity for college
graduates ages 21 – 25 who were formerly associated with
Nassau’s youth programs. The Nassau Fellows Program (NFP)
is a one-year opportunity to serve God in a variety of domestic
and international mission sites.
NFP is partnered with the PC(USA) Young Adult Volunteers
(YAV). Established in 1994, YAV has sent over 1000
volunteers to domestic and international mission sites. YAVers
have engaged in environmental protection work in Peru, immigration
reform in Arizona, and sex traffic prevention in Kenya.
We strongly encourage you—or possibly your son or daughter—to
consider the NFP/YAV partnership as an option for the
2011-2012 academic year.
YAV comes with a price tag. Volunteers must provide between
$6500 (domestic sites) and $8000 (international sites),
which helps meet the cost of travel, retreats, health insurance,
room and board. However, through the Nassau Fellows Program,
Nassau Church is now helping YAV volunteers meet
up to 90% of these expenses.
• How does one become a PC(USA) Young Adult Volunteer?
Information about YAV and the YAV online application
can be found at the following website: http://gamc.pcusa.org/
ministries/yav/. Note that YAV’s application deadline for the
2011-2012 academic year is January 20, 2010. This deadline
is not flexible!
• How does one become an NFP fellow?
The NFP application is simply a duplicate of the YAV application
and letters of reference. Please submit these items
to Nassau Presbyterian Church (ATTN: Nassau Fellows Program),
61 Nassau Street, Princeton, NJ, 08542. Like YAV, the
NFP application deadline is January 20, 2010. After reviewing
your application, we will contact you in order to set up an interview,
either in person or by phone. If you are selected as the
2011-2012 NFP fellow, we will work closely with you throughout
the YAV discernment process as together we ask for God’s
vocational direction in your life.
We hope that through the NFP/YAV partnership you will
experience God’s deep love for humanity and the mission of
the church as one in the same. We hope that you will grow in
vocational understanding and missional awareness as you serve
God either at home or abroad. We also hope that through you
Nassau Church will develop new mission partnerships with sister
churches, at home and around the world. We look forward
to hearing from you. For more information, please contact
Blankets+ Sunday is January 23
An annual opportunity to support projects which help alleviate
human suffering around the world takes place during the morning
worship services on Sunday, January 23, 2011. “Blankets
+” is jointly sponsored by Church World Service and the Presbyterian
Women of NPC. Donations from member denominations
are used to purchase blankets, tents, bedding, and other
emergency supplies for distribution internationally and within
our own country in response to natural disasters and human calamities.
The monies are also used to fund revolving loan programs
for small-scale agricultural projects, for construction of
wells and purchase of garden and carpentry tools for vocational
training programs. Among the countries helped last year were
Afghanistan, Pakistan, Haiti, Bosnia, Sierra Leone, Guatemala,
Thailand and Sudan, as well as states within the USA where
there were floods, fires, earthquakes and homelessness.
Nassau Presbyterian Church members and friends are invited
to participate in this global ministry on January 23. Special
offering envelopes from Church World Service will be in
the pews during both services of worship. Your gift of $5.00
will purchase a warm blanket. Such blankets are used to keep
people warm, to make children and babies feel secure and to
make beds and privacy screens in temporary quarters following
disasters. Larger gifts can be used to buy farm animals, farming
and carpentry tools and gardening equipment, fishing nets and
emergency shelter and sanitation kits.
In 2010, Nassau Church raised almost $2,800 to support
Blanket+ Sunday. A heartfelt THANK YOU from Presbyterian
Women to all those who gave so generously last year. We invite
everyone to contribute again this year – any amount is welcome
and any amount will help make a difference. Donations
for Blanket+ Sunday will be received during both worship services
on January 23. Please place checks (payable to NPC) or
cash donations in “Blanket+ Sunday” envelopes provided in the
pews or in any envelope marked “Blanket+ Sunday” and give
envelopes to ushers in offering plates or bring to the Church
office or Circle meetings. For more information or questions,
Annual Women’s Retreat, March 4-6
Esther, Vashti, and Us:
Called to the Witness of Resistance
Kenbrook Retreat Center, Lebanon, PA
Friday, March 4 – Sunday, March 6
This year’s retreat will explore the stories of Esther and
Vashti, as told in the short Old Testament book, Esther. Successive
queens of the great Persian Empire, they are woven into
a tale of intrigue that confronts us with the many challenges
women face, even when they sit in positions of wealth and
power. Esther and Vashti each take a unique and personal path
in meeting manipulation and intrigue and even evil head-on.
Join us as we explore the models, the methods, and the relevance
to our own lives of faith.
Our primary leader will be the Rev. Dr. Katharine Doob
Sakenfeld, Professor of Old Testament Literature and Exegesis
at Princeton Theological Seminary and a participant in the
Nassau Presbyterian Church in Princeton, NJ. Recently her research
has focused on women’s experience of biblical narratives
in the third world, and on feminist biblical hermeneutics. She
has published commentaries on Numbers (1995) and Ruth
(Interpretation, 1999), and many articles on feminist interpretation,
with a special focus on voices from diverse cultural contexts.
A Presbyterian clergywoman, Sakenfeld is the past moderator
of New Brunswick presbytery. She has been a member
of the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of
Churches since 1999. Among other books, she is the author of
Just Wives? Stories of Power and Survival in the Old Testament
and Today (Westminster John Knox Press, 2003), where you
will find a chapter on Vashti and Esther.
Kathie will be ably assisted in leadership by Carol Wehrheim,
well-known author and editor of educational resources,
and Joyce MacKichan Walker, Minister of Education at Nassau
Presbyterian Church.
Cost (including four meals and two nights lodging, is $210
single, $190 double, and $165 triple. Look for full details and
a registration form in the literature rack. Reservations will be
required by Sunday, February 13, submitted with full remittance
to Joyce MacKichan Walker, who will also answer any
questions you have about this event. We will join the women
of Derry Presbyterian Church in Hershey, PA for this retreat,
so act now to reserve a space. Carpooling can be coordinated.
Fueling Young Minds at Valley of the Pines School
Since 2002, members of the Nassau Church community have
found a variety of ways to help the children who attend Valley
of the Pines Educational Center in Parramos, Guatemala. One
of the most successful is the program that provides nutritious
daily breakfasts for approximately 300 primary students. For
some of the children, this may be the only real meal of the day.
All of them find it easier to concentrate on their studies when
they aren’t hungry.
Because of depressed economic conditions exacerbated by
the past summer’s torrential rains and flooding, the need is
especially great this year. We seek to raise $5000 ($500 per
month) to support the breakfast program over the ten-month
school year, which begins in mid January.
On Sunday, January 30, we will host an authentic Guatemalan
brunch in the Assembly Room after the 11 o’clock service.
Tickets at $15 per person or $40 per family will be available
during the January fellowship hours and at the door to the
Assembly Room before the breakfast. The menu includes fresh
hand-made corn tortillas, fried ripe plantains, black beans,
scrambled eggs with Guatemalan “chirmol” sauce, tropicalfruit
salad, and Guatemalan sweet bread. Please join us!
Please be aware as well that for a donation of $25 you can
become a Breakfast Booster, providing a student breakfast for
the entire school year. For $80, you can become a Breakfast
Patron and feed an entire class for a month. And for a donation
of $500 you can become a Breakfast Angel, providing every
primary student with breakfast for one month. Checks may be
made payable to Nassau Presbyterian Church, memo Guatemala
Breakfast Fund, and sent to the church office, or dropped
off at the door to the Assembly Room on January 30.
Our mothers told us that breakfast is the most important
meal of the day and science has confirmed it. Let’s give the Parramos
students the benefit of a hot morning meal!
PW Bible Study Opportunity, January 5
Youth Ministry
You may have noticed that on Sunday, November 21, there
was a large red truck parked in front of our church! This truck,
used to collect food donations for the Crisis Ministry, was
filled up THREE times with the generous donations from
the Nassau Church Community…as well as from a few lovely
passersby that were inspired by our service, and returned with
food donations to add to the pile. The youth of the church
were thrilled to be able to help sort and pack the donations
as they came pouring in on Sunday morning. Sunday evening
we were joined by the youth group from the Princeton
United Methodist Church, who brought the food donations
from their morning food drive, for a special presentation from
Jarrett Kerbel, Director of the Crisis Ministry. Between the two
churches, we filled the Crisis Ministry Van to full capacity, a
wonderful sight to behold. Our joy at this accomplishment
was tempered by the fact that we were informed that this food
supply would only last for one week at the Trenton site, where
over 90 households per week are served. It is important, as we
enter this New Year, to continue to give as we can to this vital
ministry!
“Bear One Another’s Burdens”, Anti-bullying event
The youth ministry is grateful for the wonderful participation
in the Anti-Bullying program that we hosted on Sunday, November
14th. This was a program largely designed and led by
the Senior High students themselves, and was presented to the
whole church. Over 100 people attended, and were led in ageappropriate
discussions about bullying, how to handle it, and
how to understand and respond from a theological perspective.
We were very happy with the outcome, and very proud of our
high school students who led the program. Because of the
success of this event, we hope to host an annual all-ages event,
hosted by the youth ministry for the general congregation.
Please check the Nassau Pres web site soon for the lesson
plans, covenant, and more information on how to respond to
bullying.
