The Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost
A Steward’s Reflection
We have a lot of children. A couple of them have left for college, but in
our heyday we used to fill an entire pew on Sunday mornings with our
four yawning, tangled-hair children and at least one friend wearing
borrowed, ill-fitting church clothes. (We sit up front on the right;
you’ve seen us even if you’ve been kind enough to look away.) Those
four children are the primary reasons we give to St. James’s with glad
and grateful hearts.
Through Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Children’s Chapel
and the relationships they have made with clergy, St. James’s has
taught our children the same values we try to teach them at home:
kindness, selflessness, and empathy. Their participation in youth
mission trips, playing alongside the Children’s Center students and
working at CARITAS has given our children valuable perspective.
They have witnessed real world struggles that make middle school
problems seem like nothing. The church has given us all endless
comfort.
St. James’s has also given our children a second family. Our eldest
daughter left for college two years ago, and she loves coming to church
with us when she is back in Richmond. She likes seeing familiar faces in
the pews and feeling hands reaching out to pat her shoulder as people
walk up to communion. You are her church family. It gives us peace to
know that our children will always have St. James’s, no matter where
their lives may lead them.
Over the years, we have trimmed down the number of organizations
we support because we would rather direct more of our charitable
dollars to St. James’s. We believe in the church’s mission; we respect
the work it does in the community; we are in awe of the hardworking
clergy and staff; and we delight in the beautiful music program. We
love this church, and we know that no matter how much we give, it will
never begin to equal what we have received.
ST. JOSEPH’S IS HERE
In November of 2011, 14 choristers and parishioners went to Port-au-Prince,
Haiti to help rebuild the St. Joseph’s Home for Boys. Today Bill Nathan and the
drummers and dancers from St. Joseph’s will join us in worship at both services. At
the Forum Hour Bill will present his story of survival and blessing. We hope you are
blessed with their story of abundant provision and that your hearts are lifted by their
vibrant and faith-filled music.
Béjè mouin, sè you Roua d’amou is a Haitian hymn as sung by Fede Jean-Pierre, with
an English paraphrase by Dr. S T Kimbrough.
Hallelujah, we sing your praises is a South African hymn. It is from Wonder, Love, and
Praise, the most recent hymnal of the Episcopal Church.
BLUEGRASS MASS: OCTOBER 28 AT 10:00 A.M.
The annual Bluegrass Mass is Sunday, October 28 at the 10:00 a.m. Joint
Service! Guest artists Molly Sharp, fiddle, and Charles Arthur, dobro, join the Guitar
Ensemble on bluegrass standards and music by Russell Lawson/Andy Smith and
Mark Whitmire. Bring a friend. It will be a wonderful service to introduce our parish
to a visitor.
HYMN OF THE MONTH
The Hymn of the Month for October is “O holy city, seen of John” (Hymn
582). The text is by Walter Russell Bowie (1882-1969), an Episcopal priest who was
born here in Richmond and served as rector of St. Paul’s, Richmond, from 1911
until 1923. In 1917 St. Paul’s granted Fr. Bowie a leave of absence to serve in World
War I; he served as a Red Cross chaplain in France. He received a B.A. and M.A.
from Harvard University and a D.D. from Virginia Theological Seminary. In 1923
Fr. Bowie performed the wedding of Fr. Doug Burgoyne’s parents at Grace Church,
New York City. In 1952 Bowie preached at the ordination of Fr. Bob Seiler.
According the Bowie, the text was inspired by St. John’s vision found in Revelation
21. The tune Sancta Civitas was composed for this text by the English composer
Herbert Howells (1892-1983).
St. Paul’s and St. Stephen’s in a glorious service of Choral Evensong. With a choir of
more than 100 of our city’s best voices gathered here at St. James’s, this will be a
beautiful service. We hope you will plan to attend.
ST. JAMES’S CHOIR GOES TO ITALY NEXT SUMMER
in the past, this event will benefit those choristers who need financial help to make the
trip. Everyone who wants to support the choir trip is invited. More information will
follow. For now, just mark your calendars so you don’t miss it.
