Giant Book Sale at Alderney
Gate
Reminder! On May 3 and 4, the annual
feast of amazing books takes place at the
Alderney Gate Public Library. This year’s
offerings are mighty thanks to larger than
normal donations. We advise you to bring
plenty of cloth bags.
Library Enters
the Express Lane
up
Halifax Public Libraries
are preparing to accelerate
check out/in service
at all branches with
a new technology that lets books and other
items circulate faster. The system uses radio
frequency identification (RFIDs), and
it comes with a promise of cost avoidance
and public service excellence.
“Imagine filling your grocery cart and
being able to check out all items at once,”
says Bruce Gorman, Director of Central
Library & Regional Services. “RFIDs are
different than bar codes. Items do not have
to line up with a scanner and be checked
out individually. You simply pass by and
the radio frequency picks up all of
the data.”
This new technology results in a faster
system. No line ups at check out. Items
re-enter circulation quicker, which means
shorter waiting periods for borrowing.
Staff members are freed to help patrons
with their specific needs.
“The system has an elegant simplicity
that does wonders for library access and
service,” says Gorman.
Gorman reassures that the new technology
does not mean a decrease in staff numbers
since all are needed to perform many other
public service tasks the Library offers.
The implementation of RFIDs across
Halifax Public Libraries is scheduled to
take place over a six month period starting
in April 2013.
Top 5 Features of New
eBook Interface
Sometimes change is great, and this
time it is fantastic! The Library’s
partners at Overdrive have built a new
interface for people who want to borrow
digital items; the results could not be
better. Here are some reasons why you
will be excited, too.
5. Available or Not Icon
Immediately, you will know if a book is
available. There is an icon on the corner
of each book image that marks the book
as available or not. Also, with one click
you can filter out all unavailable books in
the same genre.
4. Create Your Own Wish List
Every book you want to read can be
stored on a personalized list in your
account. No memory required. Just click
on the ribbon at bottom of the eBook
cover to add it to your wish list.
3. Easy on the eyes
The visual display of the eBooks is clean,
clear, and attractive. As a result, you
will view many recommendations and
options without feeling overwhelmed by
the choices.
2. No device required
You no longer need an e-reader device
to access eBooks. Now, you can read on
your desktop or laptop computer. This is
barrier free access to eBooks covering all
of your interests.
NB: You can still read eBooks on your
iPad, ereader, or other device.
1. One-step Checkout
You see a book you like, click the borrow
button and, assuming you are already
logged in to your account, you are ready
to read.
There are more interesting details in
the Help section of our eBooks page on
halifaxpubliclibraries.ca. Click on “Discover
when you get there. The video is very
informative.
Volunteer Appreciation
Week 2013
The library has just celebrated Volunteer
Appreciation Week (21-27 April) by
holding 18 events to thank the over 400
adult volunteers who have donated more
than 10,000 hours to make our community
a better place.
In partnership with many communityminded
organisations, we have been
able to provide volunteers for oneto-one
tutoring for people who want
to pass their GED, upgrade their
reading skills or make employment
advances. We have also been able
to match almost 300 new Canadians
this year with tutors to help them settle
into HRM. Volunteers are also a large
part of our afterschool programs, helping
children with their homework and reading
and math skills. The library also relies on
the generosity of our volunteers to deliver
books to those who are unable to visit our
branches.
Thanks to all of the volunteers who partook
in our programs. You are a very large part
of our success in a caring community that
values life-long learning.
Halifax Central Library Update
Every two months, look here to read the latest Central Library news.
Doors Open Halifax, June 8 & 9
Everyday many people walk by the construction site of the Halifax Central Library, but
does everyone know its historical significance?
On June 8 and 9, Central Library participates in Doors Open, a global event
that takes place annually in cities around the world. People will be invited
to explore in various ways some key spaces all around HRM. For Central
Library, this will result in talks about the site before and after the
Library’s construction as well as some fun interactive events.
The spirit behind Doors Open Halifax is one of increasing public
interest. Buildings are the “story-books of our history”, the “tangible
evidence of the development of our society, our values, and our shared
culture”. By thinking about a space differently, a person can step inside
the history, or in the case of Central Library, the making of history.
Big Cranes Are Back for a Construction Spectacle:
Halifax Central Library Hits a Milestone in its Construction
On Tuesday, April 9, the big cranes were brought back to Spring Garden Road and
Queen Street to achieve a milestone in construction of the Halifax Central Library.
The fifth floor overhang, called the cantilever, was installed at the front of the building.
As the long and narrow part of the structure that juts out over the entrance, the
cantilever is the most striking and commented upon feature of the Central Library
design. It is a prominent part of the Halifax Living Room, and it promises remarkable,
previously unseen views of the Citadel and the Halifax Harbour.
Many passers-by stopped to take notice as the two steel frames called ‘lifts’ were
put into place and were excited to see it happening. After all, it means we are one
step closer!
Singing Against the Silence
The iconography of Nova Scotia is replete
with the image of Scottish Highlanders—
tartans, kilts, and bagpipes. These romantic
clichés obscure a less cheery history
of marginalization, appropriation, and
resistance. Through interviews, Singing
Against the Silence explores the struggles of
Scottish Gaels in eastern Nova Scotia to
sustain and reclaim their language and how
these efforts sit within the larger context
of linguistic and cultural diversity. Postscreening
discussion with Michael Newton,
in 1813 with the capture of the USS
Chesapeake by the HMS Shannon. Privateers,
press gangs, the Halifax Naval Dockyard,
Melville and Deadman’s Islands and the Old
Burying Ground (St. Paul’s Church Cemetery)
are all historically linked to the War of 1812.
The war was also a key event in the creation
of many of our local communities—Preston,
Hammonds Plains, and Beechville—that
were settled by the Black Refugees. Discover
more fascinating history at one of our free
public lectures.
A History of Medicine and Social
Explore several aspects of the history of
medicine and social conditions in pre-
Confederation Nova Scotia, including roles
of governments, education of physicians,
appearance of alternative medical therapies,
accounts from Halifax Poor House hospital,
and the war of words found in newspapers
between ‘regulars’ and ‘quacks’.
Deadman’s: Melville Island
and Its Burial Ground
Today, Deadman’s Island on Halifax’s
Northwest Arm is a peaceful waterside park
and nearby Melville Island is a bustling
modern yacht club. The unhappy, and often
violent, historical uses of these locations was
one of Halifax’s best kept secrets. Now, local
historians Iris Shea and Heather Watts have
uncovered stories of hundreds who were
once unwilling residents of Melville Island’s
prison. Hear about their findings.
For all of you Korean drama (K-drama) fans, I’m sure you have watched Boys
Over Flowers or heard of it before. It’s perhaps one of the most popular
K-dramas that Canadians watch. Personally, BOF is my favourite TV series. It has
various themes and the plot is very interesting. This drama is recommended for
people who like romantic comedies.
Geum Jan-di (acted by Ku Hye-sun) is an average high school girl whose family
owns a dry-cleaning shop. She seems very much out of place when she is offered
the chance to attend Shinhwa High, which is a private high school for rich
students. Upon meeting the hottest boys of the school, a group called F4, Jan-di
is shocked by their behaviours. But, as she gets to know them, she discovers the
struggles in their lives that lie behind their appearance.
F4 Members:
Goo Jun-pyo (acted by Lee Min-ho) is the heir to the powerful Shinhwa group. He has total control
over the student body, except for one person, Jan-di.
Yoon Ji-hoo (acted by Kim Hyun-joong) is an orphan and a talented artist. He is the person who
stays by Jan-di’s side from the beginning. He protects her in various ways and saves her from the
menaces of other students.
So Yi-jung (acted by Kim Bum) is an extraordinary potter who has a playboy personality. He is later
involved with Jan-di’s best friend, Ga-eul.
Song Woo-bin (acted by Kim Joon) is the son of a mafia man. He sometimes
feels like he doesn’t belong with the almighty F4 since he doesn’t have any
remarkable talents like the other members.
Boys Over Flowers originated from Japanese
I hope you enjoy this drama. When you are
done with it, try watching the television
Libraries
are changing
with the times –
creating comfortable
spaces, interactive
programs, and services
that work for teens.
Dedicated
Spaces
Gone are the
days of “shhh!”
where youth
have no place
to hang out and
be themselves. Creating hangout spots
for young people is a priority when the
library renovates or builds new spaces.
Lounge-like seating sets a welcoming,
casual tone. Board games, art supplies,
and the latest magazines keep things
relaxing. Free wifi and computers
make internet access easy.
day...
let there be noise
(and quiet)
Friends
The Library is a great place to see people.
Meet up with friends or connect with
someone new. Come to hang out, come
to study, get creative in a program, learn
something new, or try volunteering. No
pressure. No cost. Lots of options.
Help That Counts
Need help with that assignment? Don’t
know how to find an after school job?
Have a problem bigger than you?
Library staff are trained to help you find
information you need. And for the big
stuff, they can link you to community
resources and people who can help.
Leadership & Team Building
Volunteering is a step toward a more
active future. Whether you want
experience, need to build references,
have a desire to help out, or just
want something to do, there are plenty
of opportunities to get involved.
Books and…
Everybody knows libraries have shelves of
books. Whatever your interest we’ve got
it covered – weightlifting, yoga, art, the
environment. Graphic novels, the latest
teen fiction, the classics – check. And
now you can get a lot of this in e-book or
audiobook – free and fast to download on
your smartphone, e-reader or computer.
