THE EMBROIDERED GARDEN COLLECTION
PAINTER KATE MCROSTIE COMBINES A LOVE OF
AMERICANA with the artistic tradition of European
muralists. Kate has family roots in 18 th -century America; she
works with the WILLIAMSBURG brand to interpret needle
crafts and gardening traditions from the early years of our
nation. Inspired by heritage gardens in Colonial
Williamsburg’s Historic Area and antique textiles in the
museum collections, her brushwork evokes nostalgic charm
that brings warmth to today’s home décor. The Embroidered Garden Collection combines
Kate’s stitched inspiration with the gardens, heirloom flowers,
and historic houses that highlight Colonial Williamsburg’s
Historic Area.
Kate began drawing as a child; her parents provided art
lessons to encourage her talent. Growing up in a military
family, she soaked in different landscapes and cultures as the
family moved. She loved exploring flea markets and antiques
shops with her designer mother. These forays into the past
have inspired the muted, time-worn look she uses in her
artwork, favoring sophisticated colors and textures.
After earning a B.F.A. degree in sculpture from the Atlanta College of Art, Kate started a
decorative painting and mural business. She married a Marine officer and had three daughters.
In 1998 she began to license her artwork into the home décor industry. Today she holds
licenses with many leading manufacturers of home décor and gift products that are sold around
the world. She works out of a studio near her home in Wilmington, North Carolina, and enjoys

alancing family life and painting. Her two sisters, Kristin and Meghan, help run Kate McRostie
DesignWorks, Inc.
The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation is delighted to welcome
Kate McRostie into our roster of distinguished licensees in the
WILLIAMSBURG brand. “It’s an honor to take part in preserving our
American history with The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation,”
McRostie says. “I look forward to working with the Williamsburg team
to create unique twists on the traditional decorative artwork of our
heritage.”
