YOU MIGHT AS
WELL LAUGH
I’ve accepted that our caregiving
setting is somewhat unique. Varying circumstances
came together to make
home care not only possible for us, but
also blessed on all sides. That is not to
say there haven’t been challenges, a
good number of them centered upon my
mother’s cat, an animal that is devoted to
Mom but disdainful toward all others.
As I thought about ways I might
provide laughter during this joyful but
sometimes stressful season, I
remembered Mom’s first cat, Poky. And
so here is Poky’s Christmas story,
reprinted from our caregiving devotional
My Mom Has Alzheimer’s:
***
One day near Christmas our adult
daughter, Melinda, visited her
grandmother, and made the mistake of
stroking Poky’s tabby striped coat.
Melinda was indignant when the cat
immediately sank a needle sharp tooth
into her index finger, and then strutted
away, offended by the unsolicited touch.
It was clear that Poky considered herself
to be the wronged party. I quickly
bandaged the tiny puncture wound,
murmuring soothing words to my
offended daughter.
Poky followed her unwarranted nibble
on my daughter’s hand by leaping into
the center of the Nativity scene display.
She surveyed the small porcelain figures
appraisingly and then carefully inserted
her paw into the small space between
Mary and Joseph. She neatly batted the
sleeping infant figure from the tabletop,
sending the baby flying one direction
while the manger skidded under the
couch. Melinda jumped to her feet and
pointed her bandaged finger at the guilty
animal. “Demon cat!” she shouted. Poky
was shut into her feeding area in
disgrace, and Melinda left for her home,
still fuming about the negative
characteristics of her grandmother’s
feline friend. I restored the Holy family to
their proper places, and Mom and I
shared rueful laughter over the
outrageous behavior of her cat.
That evening I mused that the
challenge of dealing with Poky was an
apt illustration of the fact that the Lord’s
authorship of a given course of action
does not guarantee that there will be no
difficulties. When I chose to bring my
mother to live with us, I was naïve and
there were surprises along the way—the
least of which was being forced to deal
with a snooty cat. But I remembered the
comfort offered me by the classic
Christian poem by Annie Johnson Flint:: 1
What God Hath Promised
God hath not promised skies
always blue,
Flower strewn paths all our lives
through;
God hath not promised sun without
rain,
Joy without sorrow, peace without
pain.
But God hath promised strength
for the day,
Rest for the labor, light for the
way,
Grace for the trials, help from
above,
Unfailing sympathy, undying love.2
We wish each of you a Christmas that
includes abundant joy and a healthy
dose of laughter.
