John Joseph Enneking (American, 1841-1916)<br />

Storm in the Adirondacks<br />

Signed and dated “Enneking 71” l.r., identified on a presentation plaque and catalogue raisonné labels from<br />

Pierce Galleries, Massachusetts, affixed to the reverse.<br />

Oil on canvas, 30 x 48 1/2 in. (76.2 x 123.2 cm), framed.<br />

Condition: Patch reinforcement c.r., losses, fine craquelure, surface grime.<br />

N.B. The work is no. 1-D-100 in the Pierce <strong>Catalogue</strong> Raisonné of Works by John J. Enneking.<br />

Although John Joseph Enneking was born in Ohio, he is most associated with New York and New England,<br />

where he painted evocative landscapes which combined elements of many different styles, including the<br />

Barbizon School, the Hudson River School, Impressionism, and Tonalism. After serving in the army during<br />

the Civil War, Enneking came to Boston and began his studies in art before moving abroad in 1874. In<br />

France he worked with Barbizon and Impressionist masters, including Claude Monet. He returned to Boston<br />

in 1876, where he enjoyed a successful career and was best known for his plein-air woodland views.<br />
