Signed and dated “Eric Pape/1900” l.r., estate stamped on the
frame backing paper.
Watercolor on paper, sight size 34 x 23 3/4 in. (86.2 x 60.0 cm),
framed.
Condition: Scattered abrasions, small crease to u.r. corner, not
examined out of frame.
N.B. The painting at hand was reproduced as an illustration
for The Scarlet Letter, published in 1900 by Houghton, Mifflin
and Company as part of a multi-volume set of The Writings of
Nathaniel Hawthorne. The illustration appears facing page 80
(Vol. 6). The lot is accompanied by a photocopy of the book’s
title page and of the illustration.

Condition: Toning, not examined out of frame.
Provenance: A private Massachusetts collection.
N.B. The lot is accompanied by a typewritten letter from Walt
Disney, dated January 23, 1934, and signed by Disney in ink,
thanking Dr. Kynett, as President of the Poor Richard Club in
Philadelphia, for awarding Disney the Poor Richard Achievement
Medal. The letter and postmarked envelope are mounted
against corrugated cardboard covered with a plastic sheet.
