<strong>Introduction</strong><br />

Teacher education is pivotal to the development of<br />

quality education st<strong>and</strong>ards. The Advanced Diploma<br />

Programme (ADP) in <strong>Teaching</strong> English as a Foreign<br />

Language (TEFL) in Higher Education is a one-year<br />

programme aimed at improving the st<strong>and</strong>ard of<br />

English language teaching in Pakistan.<br />

The ADP in TEFL has been especially designed by<br />

Aga Khan University’s Centre of English Language<br />

to provide participants with a comprehensive<br />

underst<strong>and</strong>ing of the theoretical <strong>and</strong> practical<br />

foundations of language teaching. It focuses on<br />

equipping professionals with skills to contextually<br />

apply theory to practice in classrooms. To this end,<br />

the programme engages participants in critically<br />

reviewing <strong>and</strong> analysing issues <strong>and</strong> challenges<br />

currently confronting English language teachers in<br />

Pakistan <strong>and</strong> other developing countries.<br />

In the past, Pakistan’s Higher Education Commission<br />

(HEC) has supported this teacher-education initiative<br />

through making fellowships available for teachers<br />

working in public sector colleges, universities <strong>and</strong><br />

other higher education institutions. HEC has offered<br />

fifteen (15) fellowships for 2010 – 2011 batch.<br />

<strong>Structure</strong><br />

The programme consists of six core <strong>and</strong> two optional<br />

courses taught over three terms. Classes are offered<br />

four days a week from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m., <strong>and</strong> the first<br />

<strong>and</strong> fourth Fridays of each month are set aside for<br />

students to engage in self-directed group reading.<br />

The programme also includes an ongoing academic<br />

English language development course aimed at<br />

providing participants with continuous language<br />

support to enable them to meet their learning<br />

objectives. The ADP in TEFL is offered with two<br />

options: a regular programme <strong>and</strong> a modular<br />

programme.<br />

1. Regular programme<br />

Applicants from public <strong>and</strong> private sector institutions<br />

can complete the programme in one academic year,<br />

taking all three terms in the same year.<br />

2. Modular Programme<br />

Participants from private sector institutions have the<br />

additional option of choosing to complete the<br />

programme over an extended period of three years by<br />

enrolling for one to two terms in any one academic<br />

year.<br />

1. Language testing <strong>and</strong> evaluation<br />

2. Teacher development<br />

3. Language <strong>and</strong> culture<br />

4. English language teaching management<br />

5. Computer-based teaching <strong>and</strong> learning<br />

methodology<br />

6. Bilingual education <strong>and</strong> language planning<br />

Salient Features of the Programme<br />

• Ongoing academic English course<br />

• Afternoon classes<br />

• Hostel facilities for outstation participants<br />

(subject to availability)<br />

Eligibility Criteria: C<strong>and</strong>idates with a Bachelor’s<br />

degree <strong>and</strong> two years of teaching experience will be<br />

considered for the programme, but preference will be<br />

given to c<strong>and</strong>idates with a Master’s degree <strong>and</strong> some<br />

teaching experience.<br />

<strong>Teaching</strong><br />

The programme adopts a learner-centred approach in<br />

order to promote self-directed learning. The<br />

strategies used to achieve learning outcomes include<br />

micro-teaching, seminar participation, workshops,<br />

panel discussions, interactive lectures <strong>and</strong><br />

presentations. Participants will be encouraged to<br />

engage in literature searches through the use of<br />

books, journals <strong>and</strong> online sources.<br />

<strong>Resources</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Facilities</strong><br />

The University’s two libraries: Faculty of Health<br />

Sciences library <strong>and</strong> Institute for Educational<br />

Development’s library comprise over 30,000 <strong>and</strong><br />

24,000 books respectively. Among these is an<br />

extensive <strong>and</strong> current collection of books on<br />

Education, English language teaching <strong>and</strong> linguistic<br />

research. Participants are also given access to<br />

resources such as Online English Language Learning<br />

facilities <strong>and</strong> the Learning Resource Centre.<br />

or are asked to withdraw after joining the<br />
