Class Instruction
Display 4-H banners, American flag and 4-H flag.
We’ve been learning more about 4-H and how you can become
involved. We’ve learned about the 4-H motto and pledge, and by
now, most of you should have it down! Would anyone like to lead us
in the 4-H motto and pledge today?
Allow a child to lead the 4-H motto and pledge.
Hand out the 4-H Scavenger Hunt Journal to each child.
Today we are going to have a 4-H Scavenger Hunt to help you do
some investigation in small groups. Each group will receive a 4-H
Scavenger Hunt Journal in which you will record your findings. Your
4-H Scavenger Hunt Journal lists items/topics relating to 4-H. You
must work together to find resources in your classroom containing
information about that item/topic.
Let’s look at the first item on your 4-H Scavenger Hunt Journal and
see if we can solve it together.
The example says: Find the resource with information about an
animal that most represents the Easter holiday. What animal is that?
Allow time for children to answer.
It’s the rabbit, isn’t it? Does anyone have an idea of where we can
find information about rabbits?
Allow time for children to answer. (Possible answers might
be a story book about a rabbit, a science book with
information on rabbits, a stuffed animal or rabbit toy, a
magazine or classroom picture of a rabbit.)
As you go through each scavenger hunt item, you may have to look
through books or other resources to find the information. I’ll give you
30 minutes to work on your scavenger hunt. Be sure to work as a
team. After the time is up, we’ll go over the scavenger hunt journals
and see where you found the answers to the scavenger hunt topics.

LESSON 5: 4-H Scavenger Hunt
Notes
Activity
Use a creative method to divide children into groups of
three or four. Example methods include:
Drawing colored pieces of paper from a hat. Put in four
pieces of each color of paper. Number of colors to use
depends on the number of participants. If you have 16
participants, use four colors.
Number children off by fours. Group them by like numbers.
Using a deck of cards, pull out sets of all four cards of the
same number. Use as many sets as needed for the number
of children. For example, if you have 16 children, you will
need four sets of cards such as all the 2’s, 7’s, 10’s and
Kings.
NOTE: To provide more resources, conduct this activity in the
school library or use a computer lab and allow children to
search the Internet to find resources.
4-H Scavenger Hunt Journal
Using all the resources in your classroom, go on a scavenger hunt and find books,
magazines, pictures, or items that have information about the topics listed below.
When you find something that fits the clue, write down your finding in the journal area
below. Be sure to include book titles, page numbers or locations in the room.
