The 2009 Directory of Human Services is a comprehensive guide to the programs that 

provide human services to Hendry and Glades Counties. We hope that this directory helps 

providers in our community to make referrals as well as inform them of the array of services 

available. 

We have included a keyword index to allow users to easily find specific services. The keyword 

index lists the programs alphabetically and includes the main phone number of that program. 

Please be sure to view the full program listing for additional information such as program 

requirements or alternate phone lines.

Gulf Coast Community Care's (GCCC) Alternate Family Program (AFP) provides supported housing to approved adult 

(18 year +) psychiatric clients, both civil and forensic. Housing is provided through contractual relationships with 

caregivers licensed as Adult Family Care Homes (AFCH) by the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA). 

These homes are private homes integrated into the community that permit living arrangements for up to five (5) unrelated 

persons. Most clients are also enrolled with or eligible for enrollment with the Florida Assertive Community Treatment 

(FACT) Teams in their respective counties. In addition, GCCC provides independent supported housing for psychiatric 

adults, both men and women, who are higher functioning and can live more on their own. GCCC also provides 

assistance with Social Security Disability claims, both initial and appeallete stages. One of the staff is also a nationally 

trained SSI/SSDI Outreach Access and Recovery (SOAR) trainer.

Hear Now is a national non-profit program committed to assisting deaf and hard-of-hearing persons with limited financial

of many benefactors. We receive no government funding. Salvage Hearing Aid Donations- Hear Now collects hearing 

aids for recycling purposes. Any make or model, regardless of age, can be donated to the hearing aid recycling program.

Section 502 Program - Guaranteed 

The loan guarantee program provides guarantees to lenders. Lenders may approve loans up to 100 percent of the 

appraised value for moderate income applicants. An approved lender originates the loan and the agency will guarantee 

90 percent of the mortgage. These loans are processed by our Local Offices. 

Section 502 Program -Direct 

A single family housing direct loan program that provides opportunities for very low- and low-income families and 

individuals to purchase or construct their own home with a direct loan from Rural Development. The homeowner's 

monthly mortgage payment is based on income. These loans are processed by our Local Offices. 

Section 504 Program-Direct Loans and Grants 

The loan and grant program can assist qualified very low-income homeowners to make repairs to improve or modernize 

their home, to make their homes safer and sanitary or to remove health and safety hazards. Grants are available for

The Health Care for Homeless Veterans Program at West Palm Beach VA Medical center offers a wide range of inpatient 

and outpatient services for veterans. Homeless veterans may utilize any of these services to meet their medical, 

psychiatric or substance abuse needs. The program provides an array of services. The Medical Center maintains a 

separate building on the grounds for homeless veterans called the Veteran's Resource Center. The program has shower 

and laundry facilities, a food pantry, and a clothes closet for homeless veterans. There is also a 15 bed contract with a 

program called the Stand Down House, which is a 45 bed facility that veterans can reside in while attending treatment 

programs. Financial assistance programs are also available.
