The United Way of Lee, Hendry, and Glades Counties 

is a volunteer organization dedicated to improving the 

quality of life for all people in our community. This is 

accomplished through fundraising, fund distribution, 

community building, volunteer advancement, and 

information and referral. 

We don’t just wear the shirt...

the United Way and the United Way network of 

agencies, programs and initiatives in our community 

this year. Thank you! Thank you for your support! 

Thank you for believing in your community! Thank 

you for LIVING UNITED! 

It was another challenging campaign, but 

volunteers worked hard to reach the campaign goal 

for the 18th year in a row. Companies, communities, 

partner agencies and individuals united to make the goal, and ensure 

that the partner agencies can continue the vital programs that benefi t 

individuals, families and our community as a whole. 

I am proud of what our United Way does for our community. While the 

fundraising is extraordinarily important, collaborating with our partners 

to advance the common good by creating opportunities for a better life 

is what the United Way is really about. 

Our programs focus on education, income and health because they 

are the building blocks for a good quality of life. Toward that end, the 

United Way of Lee, Hendry, and Glades has implemented many projects 

in 2010-2011. A few include: 

• Opening a new United Way House in Clewiston and soon one in 

Moore Haven; 

• Expanding the VITA program to return over $1.8 million dollars to 

families and our economy, 

• Organizing thousands of volunteers to assist our agencies. 

These are a few of the things that your contributions have made 

possible.

LIVE UNITED CAMPAIGN 

Highlights of the 

2010-2011 Campaign

CAMPAIGN GOAL: We exceeded our 

2010-2011 Campaign goal and 

raised $8,024,525. This is the 18th 

consecutive year that our goal has 

been obtained or exceeded. 

ALEXIS de TOCQUEVILLE SOCIETY: 

Under the leadership of David Lucas, 

16 new de Tocqueville members 

joined the Society, bringing the 

total membership to 125. Society 

members gave $2,110,665 which is 

$50,000 more than last year. 

KEEL CLUB: Under the leadership of 

Tom Uhler, 290 new givers joined 

the Keel Club bringing the total 

membership to over 2,000. Keel 

Club members gave over $1.7 million. 

COMBINED LEADERSHIP GIFTS: 

$3,818,852 

COMPANIES: Publix Super Markets, 

for the fi fth time, surpassed the 

$1 million mark with a total of 

$1,245,483. 13 companies and 

communities gave $100,000 or more. 

COMMUNITIES: 21 residential

Our generous community has done it again! Despite 

the diffi cult economy, you dug deep to give what 

you could to help our friends and neighbors who are 

hurting, out of work, or ill. In the toughest economy 

that we have faced in many years, you gave so others 

could look forward to a better life. I am so proud of our 

community. 

What is more important than the fact that we made 

our goal is that the 72 United Way Partner Agencies 

will receive their full allocation of funds. The needs in 

our community have increased signifi cantly in these 

troubled times. Many agencies have lost funding from 

both government and private sources. United Way 

Partner Agencies’ 160 programs will be fully funded 

and hundreds of thousands of our fellow citizens will 

receive the help they need.

network of 72 human service partners in the community 

that are leading the way to address the issues 

that matter most by improving lives and delivering 

meaningful results.

ALLOCATIONS 

THE ALLOCATIONS PROCESS 

The Allocations Process is the cornerstone of our United Way funding 

process, and ensures fi scal and program accountability for all programs and 

initiatives while meeting the social service needs of our community. 

In the process, volunteers challenge each partner’s effectiveness at 

providing services, review the need for these services in the region, and 

analyze the impact of United Way funding in meeting these needs. After 

reviewing the proposals submitted by the agencies, team members make 

recommendations to the United Way Board of Directors for allocating funds 

to agencies, programs and initiatives in the upcoming year.

United Way 211 is an easy to 

remember, three digit number that 

provides free information and referral 

to health and human service agencies 

within Lee, Hendry, and Glades 

Counties. Clients as well as businesses 

and human service agencies can 

call and receive information and 

referrals appropriate to their needs. 

In 2010, the total call volume for 

United Way 211 

was 52,640 calls 

for human service help. 

In addition, the 211 website had 

over 42,000 hits 

seeking information.

Finding Help 

Every hour of every day, someone in our 

community needs human services... from fi nding 

an after-school program, to counseling for a teen, 

or securing adequate care for an aging parent. 

When people don’t know where to turn, United 

Way 211 helps people navigate their way through 

the maze of health and social service agencies by 

providing information on resources specifi c to the 

client’s situation. 

Storm Information Hotline 

During times of natural disasters such as 

hurricanes, United Way 211 becomes the Storm 

Information Hotline for Lee and Hendry Counties 

offering information on shelters, evacuation 

routes, and recovery services. 

Feeding Programs 

United Way 211 collaborated with over 20 

partners including the Harry Chapin Food Bank, 

CCMI, and The Salvation Army to provide Free 

Food Fridays during the summer months. Over 

782 families and 3,096 individuals were served 

at seven different locations. 

A monthly food distribution in LaBelle and Moore 

Haven was established in partnership with the 

Harry Chapin Food Bank and The Salvation Army. 

A weekly breakfast program to feed the hungry 

and homeless was established in LaBelle.

LIVING UNITED MEANS POSITIVE CHANGE 

Volunteer Income Tax Service 

United Way 211, along with CredAbility (formerly 

Consumer Credit Counseling Service) worked with 

the IRS to expand the local Volunteer Income Tax 

Assistance Program (VITA). The VITA Program 

assists lower to middle income individuals and 

families with free tax preparation and fi ling. Many 

of those that qualify for the Federal Earned Income 

Tax Credit (EITC) are not aware of this credit and do 

not receive it. This service is in an effort to increase 

the number of qualifi ed fi lers who receive the 

earned income tax credit and other similar credits. 

Volunteers are recruited, and then trained and 

certifi ed through the Internal Revenue Service.

to local taxpayers 

and our economy.

We Care is a United Way initiative coordinated 

by The Salvation Army in partnership with the 

Lee County Medical Society, Family Health 

Centers, the Southwest Florida Community 

Foundation, Lee Memorial Hospital, and the 

Cape Coral Community Foundation. 

In 2010, 

We Care specialists 

provided over $653,000 in 

medical care for uninsured, 

low income patients. 

Offi ce visits, diagnostic tests, 

surgery, anesthesia, hospitalization, 

chemotherapy, and physical therapy 

were provided to 24 patients 

free of charge. 

There are over 200 volunteer 

We Care specialists. 

Buidling Stronger Families 

The Siemer Building Stronger Families initiative 

seeks to help families with school age children 

who may be facing a medical crisis, loss of 

employment, domestic violence and other similar 

major problems with the objective of helping the 

families maintain stable housing and decrease 

the mobility rate of children in the school system. 

Over 150 children were able to stay in their 

originating school in 2010 with the assistance of 

case management and fi nancial assistance. The 

project is operated by United Way partner agency 

Community Cooperative Ministries (CCMI).

UNITED WAY HOUSES 

Bringing Services to Neighborhoods 

United Way of Lee, Hendry, and Glades 

Counties, in collaboration with the Lee County 

Department of Human Services and our human 

service partners, bring needed services into 

communities through the network of United Way 

Houses. United Way Houses provide space for 

agencies to reach clients who may not be able 

to access services outside their neighborhood. 

There are 12 United Way Houses in operation. A 

new United Way House will be opened in Moore 

Haven in the fall of 2011.

TRUE STORIES OF LIVING UNITED 

Building a Better Life 

Preschoolers Give to United Way 

Giving people more than short-term help, and assisting people in fi nding long-term 

solutions which put them on the road to a better life are important goals of the 

United Way and The Salvation Army. Getting your life back on track is very diffi cult 

when you have an addiction to pain killers, but that’s exactly what Christina did with 

the help of United Way partner agency, The Salvation Army. 

Christina grew up in a loving family with good parents, but suffered several 

emotional losses that made her turn to drugs so she “didn’t have to deal with the 

pain.” As a result, she became addicted to prescription pain medicine and ended up 

in jail. She was even faced with the possibility of having her two young girls taken 

away. 

The courts offered her a chance to stay at The Salvation Army’s Corrections Program 

where she would receive counseling and treatment. Even though Christina had tried 

many programs before unsuccessfully...the people at The Salvation Army got through. 

Today she lives in the area with her two girls and works a full time job. She’s been 

clean for several years and dreams of going to college to get a degree in social work 

so she can help others build a good life. 

United Way partner agency CCMI’s Montessori preschoolers established 

the fi ctitious company, Beelicious Foods, after receiving a grant funded 

by the Junior League of Fort Myers. Grant funds enabled the school to 

purchase ingredients and tools to make healthy snacks from scratch as 

well as crafts to make bracelets, picture frames and holiday ornaments. 

Proceeds from the sale of these items are being donated to the United 

Way. 

“This was the highlight of my day,” said Cliff Smith. “These students 

worked hard for this donation, and I told them it will go a long way to 

helping someone in our community. I think it’s really great that these 

young students are already giving back to their community.” 

“The goal is to teach the kids not only about cultivating and harvesting 

healthy food, but also about being self-suffi cient individuals and giving back to the community,” said Cindy Venezia, director of 

CCMI’s Montessori Preschool. “The students are very excited to have raised about $80 from Beelicious product sales.” According to 

Venezia the students learned how small businesses are established. Beelicious Foods includes students who make up the fi ctitious 

company’s board of directors and executives. 

“It makes me feel super duper happy,” said Denaidrick Cook, Beelicious Foods president. “I like to help people,” added Raquia 

Thompson, vice president. “It makes me happy,” said Mikaia Brown, public relations, “We like United Way.” “This is something I 

have never seen before in any school, especially a preschool,” said Rashad Thompson, Raquia’s father who was in attendance for 

the presentation. “I know it means a lot to her.” 

“These students are learning at an early age that anything is possible and that they are tomorrow’s business owners and 

entrepreneurs,” said Sarah Owen, CEO of CCMI. “This donation might seem like a little amount to many, but to these kids it’s a lot, 

and the long-term lessons they have learned today will make a better world tomorrow.”

VOLUNTEER CENTER 

The United Way Volunteer Center serves 

our community by connecting individuals 

and groups to volunteer activities. This is 

an invaluable resource to those that recruit 

volunteers as well as people and companies 

looking for volunteer opportunities. The United 

Way Volunteer Center serves as a focal point 

for mobilizing and connecting both new and 

established volunteers and leaders, engaging 

them in activities that strengthen and unite our 

community. 

United Way Days of Caring is a year-round 

program that connects groups with nonprofi t 

agencies in need of assistance. Groups have 

many choices of types of projects needed 

by agencies, location in our community and 

degree of physical labor and time commitment. 

A few examples of recent projects include: 

• Constructing a garden and playscape for 

the children at Child Care of Southwest 

Florida’s Messina Center 

• Filling backpacks with food for the students 

of Orange River Elementary School 

• Refi nishing fl oors at CCMI 

• Sorting food at Harry Chapin Food Bank 

The Volunteer Center organized 45 United Way 

Days of Caring projects in the past year, with 

1,735 volunteers for a total of 7,036 volunteer 

hours.

LEADERSHIP GIVING 

The United Way of Lee, Hendry, and Glades Leadership Givers are a 

group of generous community minded individuals and couples who 

provide substantial fi nancial support of $1,000 or more to make 

an impact. There are two groups of leadership givers: the Alexis de 

Tocqueville Society and the Keel Club. 

The Alexis de Tocqueville Society is composed of givers at the 

$10,000 level and above. The Alexis de Tocqueville Society of 

Lee, Hendry, and Glades was founded by Linda and David Lucas 

in 1991. Nationally, there are more than 20,000 members of the 

Alexis de Tocqueville Society in more than 350 communities. The 

Society is named for French aristocrat Alexis Charles-Henri Clerel 

de Tocqueville, who wrote of his admiration for the American 

commitment to neighbor helping neighbor in his classic book, 

“Democracy in America.”
