Methods<br />
• Study design: Descriptive study design<br />
• Participants & setting:<br />
134 monks from 10 temples under 2 sub<br />
- district in Bangkok<br />
• Procedures:<br />
- A set of self-report questionnaires was<br />
employed to assess smoking history,<br />
behavior, and needs for cessation<br />
services<br />

Findings<br />
• The average age of participants was<br />
42.23 years (21-80 years)<br />
• Majority of participants (45%) has<br />
been a monk for more than 10 years<br />
• 85.10% of them did not intent to<br />
leave the monkhood status within<br />
the year<br />
• 52.90% of them had high school<br />
graduation<br />

Findings<br />
• 44 out of 134 monks (32.83%)<br />
indicated that they were smokers<br />
• 95.5% of monk smokers had been<br />
smoked before being a monk<br />
• The average age of smoking<br />
initiation was 16.84 years (12 - 44<br />
years)<br />

Findings<br />
• Major cause of smoking initiation<br />
was experiment (59.10%)<br />
• Major reason to keep smoking was<br />
stress reduction (43.20%)<br />
• Cost of cigarette per day was less<br />
than 30 Baht (1 US $) (47.70%) &<br />
31-60 Baht (1-2 US $) (45.50%)<br />
• 90% of smokers attempted to quit<br />
smoking at least one time in their<br />
life<br />

Findings<br />
• The average nicotine dependence<br />
level was 4 + 2.35 (Score 0 - 10)<br />
• Smokers were classified not<br />
addicted and slightly addicted<br />
equally (38.60% each)<br />
• 18.20% (8 persons) of smokers<br />
indicated that they did not want to<br />
quit smoking<br />

• For monks who wanted to quit<br />
smoking were interesting in<br />
nicotine replacement therapy<br />
• 70% of them would like to<br />
participate in a cessation program<br />
holding at the temple in the<br />
morning<br />

Conclusion<br />
• Monk smokers had a nicotine<br />
addicted behavior as general<br />
smokers<br />
• Offering a cessation program for<br />
monk should be tailored to the<br />
monkhood context because they<br />
had a different life style and<br />
religious status from general<br />
population<br />
