Traditional <strong>Metro</strong> <strong>Ethernet</strong> <strong>Networks</strong><br />

Newer generations of STP (IEEE802.1q-2003 – Multiple STP aka 802.1s):<br />

Built on top of RSTP<br />

Added VLAN awareness:<br />

Introduces the capability for the existence of multiple STP instances within the<br />

same bridged network<br />

Allows the association of VLANs to STP instances, in order to provide a (relatively)<br />

small number of STP instances, instead of using an instance per VLAN.<br />

Different STP instances can have different topologies, which allows much better<br />

link utilisation<br />

BUT<br />

The stigma associated with past failures is hard to remove…<br />

The protocol is fairly complicated, compared to its much simpler predecessors<br />
